Note that a spear adds +2 damage on a crit.

Also, what about abort actions? They might help serve as a limiter, swinging things the other way.

I don't think so--first of all, we have martial adepts allowed, so that takes care of it partially, and then there are rogues and the like who are going to have half-decent bonuses on attack rolls (+5 at 3rd level when flanking) making Mobility and/or Advanced Called Shot especially yummy for them. ...

Hrmmm... will ponder the situation ponderously, and get more opinions, taking into account math/numbers thus far before making a decision. Thanks for the help, cthulu. On another note, how does it look vs. enemies with low/no racial HD and class levels? Goblins, orcs, hobgoblins, and so on? That mig...

*nod* As I mentioned above, big monsters are supposed to be damn scary for the most part. How does it compare to the most prevalently-sized enemies, other medium creatures who don't double HP?

Could you list out all the numbers and what they're referring to so we can be on the same page? I'm lost as far as some of them go... Oh, for the str damage; the ogre only adds 1/2 Strength (+2) to damage. The fighter gets his full Strength to damage because he has Power Attack, so the numbers shoul...

Let me know if you take another crack at it. That said, we still haven't shown that the combats are quite as lethal as people have insisted.

Could certainly be, or taking a -8 to attack to remove 5 protection from the ogre. Unsure how the numbers would break when taking RD into account. Do you have any idea on what a formula that took RD into account would look like as far as damage goes? I know DPR vs. AC is Chance to Hit x average dama...

Right, that's if you don't only crit, but also roll maximum. Which is going towards the far end of probability, I think.

Kaelik: Updated previous post with list.

Could you break down how you calculated the damage? I'm especially interested in understanding how you added in the RD damage where you add 1/2 the amount by which you beat the AC to damage. And that might be right--I'm not sure since I don't understand the math at a glance. Could you break it down?...

Here's the list Kaelik, only from the MM. I'm sure I could find tons more going through the other MMs. Mordin Solus voice: Ah. Parameters. *sniff* Very good. Alrighty, let's take a look at some of the monsters that litter the MM. Basic races with class levels. Animated objects Assassin Vine Azer Bar...

First let me say that I respect that everyone has their own opinion, and I'll take the vast overwhelming opinion thus far into consideration. I want to talk to a few people who I find a little less biased than many of the regulars on TGD, and after collecting data I'll decide what I want to do with ...

There's a difference there though; if the town guard is no threat to you (level 1 warriors vs. optimized level 6+ PCs? pfft) then the threat is going to be meaningless and characters are going to have virtually no in-character reason not to kill the town guard or half the town if they feel like it. ...

More the trope. In short an artifact teleported them to a Zeltukal demiplane where this thing fucked with their minds, followed by this one being summoned and them having to fight it. Instead of being freaked out, despite bleeding from their ears and noses from the first on and the second one being ...

If you concern is between-battle healing, why not use potions or consumeables instead of "the power of positive thinking"? Bandages are more "realistic" and "gritty". Sure, that works well. Just remove the "taking stock" option and allow only bandages (which ...

Ghostwheel, you have to understand something. Kaelik, ubernoob, and Frank couldn't care less about fluff. All they care about are rules. And having a chance to shout at somebody else's rules. And frankly, I don't think fluff discussions are all that productive because they're ultimately subjective....

You are stupid. Your example involves the fighter ignoring armor protection on the Ogre, but apparently the Ogre is too stupid to do the same damn thing to the fighter even though the fighter has better armor. Try again. The Ogre takes a -6 penalty to attack rolls to do 9 more damage on every attac...

Ghostwheel, you say all Wizard level classes are removed. You also say that the big bads are Wizard level. You don't fight BBEGs every single fight, do you? And furthermore, even if you fought someone with psion or wizard levels it wouldn't mean that they autowin unless they took exactly the right ...

I agree that it's boring--in fact, that's what 3.5 sword-based combat usually devolves to. Which is why there are A. called shots , and B. hybrid classes that don't suck (psywar, martial adepts, and so on). While damage might be devestating, you might be better off dazing, blinding, or stunning a po...

As for the ogre, just for the lulz I decided to see what the fight between a fighter and an ogre actually looks like under GnG. To say the least, your numbers were a little off. First off, we add 1 to the CR of the ogre for being Large, so the fighter is actually level 4, and the ogre's HP is double...

Actually, I had a better idea. Use 4E as your base. No. I dislike the chassis that 4e brings. Fact: Ogres are going to appear in almost every game no matter how low powered. Fact: PCs should have a good chance at NOT getting one shot by Ogres. Fact: Psions (and everything else with spells) are bann...

So, you're rewriting the entire fucking monster manual as well? Fuck you. Either supply some ACTUAL challenges that PCs are expected to face, or fuck off. If you're getting rid of the entire monster manual, then there is literally no reason to use D&D as your base at all. Actually, I don't need...

D&D does not do that. Also, saying "I combined some of this stuff, plus some of this other stuff" isn't helpful. Tell us what your final system looks like. How detailed would you like a summary to be? E6 is easy to figure out (stop leveling at level 6), so GnG is the only thing that o...

Please read above. You do not usually fight ogres in this setting. You fight mostly humanoid creatures, to be specific warriors and commoners. Sometimes you fight small creatures such as abberations, tiny demons that have gotten free, wild elven cannibals, people from the the various houses, gang me...

Shattered Haven (Campaign Setting)

So, after much lurking and some cajoling from the other guys on the wiki I finally decided to post on TGD. This first post will be detailing the campaign setting I've been (very) slowly working on hammering out. The setting itself is rather grimdark, taking inspiration from a number of sources inclu...
