Re: The Nightmare Seeker
I realized the most wonderful thing about Basic Field of Nightmares Made Real today: the reason illusionists don't get tricked by their own illusions, is that they have the incontrovertible proof of having just cast the illusion spell.

Re: [High 5e] Brancalonia: Spaghetti Fantasy Setting
Yeah, I've been annoyed for years that basically everyone who wants to add non-Tolkien races to a D&D-offshoot setting comes up with some variation on "furry/fey race" then "evil/outcast race" then "artificial/transformed race" then "extra-magic/psionic race&q...

I can imagine a dragon in Prak's world quoting Adventurer's Almanac almost word-for-word so easily.

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
When playing physically, I'd like to use physical dice. Physical dice are inherently fun to roll. I haven't played physically in a long time though.

Re: Moments when a piece of entertainment completely lost you.
I seriously do not understand why people would want to roleplay being oppressed (or oppressing people, for that matter), save, perhaps, for a hypothetical table of marginalized players playing an Inglorious Bastards scenario. I mean, sure, maybe the GM says "the townsfolk are all really racist...

Re: Races of War
I know this will come as a shock to everyone and I'm sure this is a totally unique experience on this board, but my hard drive is full of text documents detailing a D&D clone I'm never going to finish. ... The realistic answer is that it would take a shitload of time to get it to a point where ...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered
Someone should do an OSSR of how the Tome hype machine worked on the den sometime. I think it has something to do with Username17's fun writing style, but that can't be the whole reason because even his later projects weren't nearly as popular here. Perhaps the appeal to homebrewing, that for a time...

If this was the Holmes from Sherlock he'd just look at the empty space where the post used to be and correctly infer from responses at the time exactly what the post must have said.

Speaking of which, that reminds me: Utterfail taught me with COREFAILURE that quite a lot of established settings have tried to get into RPGs, and were just remarkably bad at it.Whipstitch wrote: ↑Tue Apr 20, 2021 8:12 pmThe real ambitious sorts want to eclipse Azeroth, not Faerun.

Re: Is DnD the most popular because of ease?
If that's the case, then an RPG in a well-established universe people actually know about, like Star Wars, should do even better than D&D, which is more vaguely reminiscent of other fantasy settings people actually know nowadays. Take orcs for example, I bet most D&D players assume they're s...

Re: What were Gygax & Arneson & pals looking at for early D&D?
I like your post Also, this thing where people fall back onto the "correct" option is in a way why I think 4X computer games are the closest you get to TTRPGs on the computer. Like, they're so convoluted that you can't really expect to find the right move, so you kinda have to fall back on...

Re: Is DnD the most popular because of ease?
I think the biggest struggle with starting TTRPGs is "how do you even play this thing?" It's awkward to do like a board game and just tell you exactly how to place the pieces and then follow a strict turn order with well-defined phases. So I think lots of people get pretty overwhelmed unle...

No no, my optimized character really is that good, I'm not shit talking here, and it wouldn't turn out to be wild overconfidence or some sort of bullshit exploit that would never fly. My character would just walk up and punch him to death. With his balls. I mean, I've seen it. Instead of waiting fo...

My point, though is that the entire DnD magic system is a bunch of bullshit artifacts. There's a big difference between bullshit artifacts you've read and ones you haven't. All magic systems are a bunch of bullshit artifacts, the ones that seem like they are less like that just put more of the made...

GW army games are derived from wargames. So sometimes there's an aspect of trying to simulate an army of soldiers you don't actually have firm control over, who might come up with various things they'd rather do than what you want them to. Thus troops can run away, frenzy, and are somewhat unwilling...
