Re: Let's Read Gary Gygax's NECROPOLIS - Discussion/Review

Although, this idea is a bit hard to square with his whole "YOU CAN NOT HAVE A MEANINGFUL CAMPAIGN IF STRICT TIME RECORDS ARE NOT KEPT" thing, which implies that making sense and planning ahead should be involved in the game... I wonder if he changed his mind at some point

Re: Let's Read Gary Gygax's NECROPOLIS - Discussion/Review

The DM is supposed to make a show of rolling DC 30 Will Saves for the players (behind a screen). Make a show indeed, this is an interestingly bizarre part of the adventure... I'd never considered the possibility that the act of forgetting circumstance bonuses until after your roll and then retroact...

Does the ambush have listed tactics which aren't very good? Because my intuition is nagging me to remember some times when I dmed non-Tome games and had a TPK or nearly one... With a level gap that big it should be the players doing the ambushing  I wonder how many parties got through it and we...

Comparing to Seaborne, I guess they imagine that Orderborne should trigger somewhere south of 1 in 8 times? I feel like it'd be hard to come up with one "wise saying" that was that hard to apply, let alone three.

Given the size of D&D, would a new edition have to include umpteen years of bloat and weird classes and races and everything, pretty soon out of the gate? Otherwise you've annoyed existing players, but there are some really big and obvious downsides to trying to mash everything in, especially q...

Re: Building a Better Warhammer Game

It's just a sequence of rolling progressively fewer dice, if players are thinking deeply about the context of the first rolling step vs the second even though they have no difference on what actually happens to the units on the field they're gonna be here all day. I think there is something mathemat...

I suppose the low melting point makes it just, really convenient. And once the models are painted then they should be safe to handle right, it's just the hazmat treatment while gluing and priming that would be a hassle

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

Arguably what matters more than the number of status effects in the game is the number of status effects in the match, if a player is playing a fire elemental army you could well want being on fire to be a cool bespoke effect that gave the fire elemental army a unique playstyle. The complexity overl...

Re: Annoying Game Questions You Want Answered

I disagree, in a skirmish wargame one of the design goals is likely to be that two people show up to the table with armies they picked out on their own without knowing what the opponent would bring, and then they have a tactical battle that's balanced enough that it's not boringly trivial. "Oh ...

Re: Trying to do Divination Better

Actually, divination powers that are vague and narrativey and heavily interpreted by the DM gives me an idea. Why not have a character building resource dedicated to letting the DM give you problems? Like you could pick up "lost heir of the kingdom" to be hunted by assassins and have to hi...

Re: Moving pegs on a player mat like Scythe / Engine building for tabletop RPG?

Having a light flavoring system like Kaelik's elemental siphon is pretty good for a TTRPG I think. It's nice to have some unique class mechanics that give you a little bit of extra stuff to think about beyond what the other players can see, especially in order to make your actions a little mysteriou...

Re: [Review] Draw Steel! The playtest packets I guess

Also boons and banes is a better alliteration and you'd think a writer would appreciate that. Boons and banes sounds funnier, but alas, making two opposites that are used in the same context sound similar would lead to a lot of disastrous mixups in play. They aptly avoid alliteration at an area and...

I think you can add racism to this aura-based system without too much trouble. Having a character who is racist doesn't require tracking that character's relationships with specific other characters or anything, just a modifier that says they don't trust elves even when the elf has a trustworthy aur...

Re: [Domain TTRPG] Trust, Resource, Faith

Fairly tale trust mechanics could be kinda neat, we are usually talking about fantasy games after all. And as an extra upside, it doesn't aim to model realistic social interactions so it's not doomed to exclusively produce results that are worse than mtp. However, with a social mechanics system then...

Let's not hijack this thread with Trust Decay mechanics. If you're serious about proposing it, start a new thread and give us a clear explanation of what you're working with. And I'm curious to see if you can pass the 'human test' without quoting or name-dropping.
Great job, PhoneLobster.
