Gilgamesh & Grendel: using D&D for ancient big folk

I’m working on a new setting for a D&D game I plan to run, and I have something wacky planned for races and technology. I wanted some input from y’all on how to balance things to make it less terrible. Plan: The era is “late bronze age”, to give it a term we generally understand. Weapons are usu...

Mostly, I don't think they're running the playtest for advertising. I think they're running the playtests with poorly-advertised goals that conflict with better balance ( like backwards compatibility ..... From what I've seen the biggest problem with Pathfinder as a basic conceptual entity is that ...

I agree with you, Bihlbo, but there are some arguments against point buy systems like that. Yeah, I didn't mean to make it sound like I was advocating point-buy. I merely wanted to point out that fighting against a monster's AC isn't much different than fighting against a swamp's DC. I think other ...

Bards?

I've looked through some Tome stuff for info on bards, and I haven't found it yet. Am I missing it? If I'm not, is the bard intended to be not included in a Tome game?

This topic has been on my mind as well. I'm still not sure what I think about it. For instance, if you're looking at running a fight with some critters in a cave, the Climb skill comes into play in combat. Some of the players can't get to the critters because their Climb modifier is -1, while others...

Level 1 very much has the "this is where you start" vibe to it. Whereas "Level B," particularly if kept on a wholly separate table in an entirely different section of the book (i.e. the section on monsters instead of the one on character advancement), doesn't have that connotati...

Re: Not starting people at level 1.

Personally, I don't like the idea of starting most campaigns at level 1. [snip] So a question abounds--is there any way to stop these dillweeds? Do you think that there's some blurb or mechanic or whatever that can pull these out or do we just accept the fact that the game is going to have to end 2...

I didn't say that I don't get why levels are a "thing", chief, I questioned the assumption that a game (any given game, all games, this game, that game) NEEDS levels. Yeah, no one cares. The topic is about starting at level 3, which implies that levels are used. Don't change the topic to ...

why have a first level if everyone is going to start at third. The only reason there's a desire to start at 3rd is because the PCs are more capable. Because they've advanced two levels. Therefore they are "better" than some enemies they might face. If you make level 1 characters have all ...

I like the idea thematically, because it's exactly the same as Exalted but with different terms for the same thing. However, mechanically building it with one resource pool that buys everything is virtually the same as doing a class-less point-buy system, which is problematic at best with d20.

This subject hits the nail on the head as to why I can't stomach most WW games. Exalted is fine, because I like weird LSD trips in my games. But crazy evil BS pretending to be normal behavior seems to flow through Vampire and Mage and Werewolf and etc. like a carload of McDoubles on the way to your ...

He might be cool with some variant where half of the damage you guys take is converted to non-lethal. This way, fights play out about the same in terms of how much damage it takes to drop someone, but you heal half of your damage at a much faster rate (24 times faster). We used this in the game we ...

I don't know how true to LotR he wants to stay. If he keeps magic items scarce, he'll want to cap the game at a lower level than 10. You'll quickly run into problems otherwise. As you mentioned, E6 might be a good place to start. Extremely close, and I mentioned the same thing. A Mithril chain shir...

Requesting suggestions on making LotR work with 3.5/PF

A friend of mine wants to run a Lord of the Rings game! We are all familiar with D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder, which he prefers, so that's the direction he's leaning. This presents some problems that beg fixes, and I'd like to present him with options - which is where you come in. I'd love some sugges...

But here's the problem: the combat minigame is incredibly fiddly. It's not exciting , it's actually really dull. I basically end up doing the same thing over and over again. Not because I'm drunk (although I am), and not because I am unimaginative tactically (which I am not), but because the charac...

I really want to nutshot the douche who is responsible for 4Es, just on principle. Still, having recently run a D&D game for my brother's kids, I find myself wanting an "easy mode" fighter to hand my neice who only ever used her basic attack during her first game, so I might have to bu...

Luck's Touch Divination Level: 9 Duration: 1 round/level For the duration of the spell, any time the target makes an attack roll, skill check, ability check, or saving throw, they may roll twice and select which die roll to use. This is kinda terrible for the level. If this applied to any die roll,...
