4E is a solid system because it unifies the mechanics and gives every class a role and opportunity to contribute to the fight. If the math breaks down, as you claim, it's certainly problematic. But those elements can be fixed with adjustments to said math. You can't just fix 3E fighters with adjust...

4E is a good start when it comes to fixing fighters. My personal opinion is that skills in general should be detached from class. There's no reason a Fighter can't know the basics of Arcana or that a Wizard can't be skilled at jumping across chasms. Ability scores will still make physical classes ge...

The 1980s: The RPG

I'm planning an RPG that is essentially based on the cheesiness of 1980s popular culture, using tropes, classes, and villains from the movies of that decade. So far I'm trying to determine the roles of the classes. Defenders Barbarian (Inspired by Conan) Underdog (Inspired by Rocky) Controllers Mad ...

I did actually buy into the game. 4E is a very solid system. It's hardly my favorite system, but it's the best thing to come out under the brand of Dungeons and Dragons so far, unless you count Gamma World.

That's not exactly true, as fighters could theoretically be equipped with skills in 3rd and 4th, that expand their role beyond 'punching bag that hits back'.

None of that to validate shadzar's nuttiness of course.

Edit: Damn it that was a response to Parthenon.

There's some sales figures a few around here throw around Or, how about this. Go to your local game store, and ask them how 4e is selling compared to 3.x did two years after 3.x came out? Wizards doesn't actually release their sales figures, so I'm not sure where they're coming by them. And FLGS sa...

Other than the apparent misfire of trying to sell the Red Box at mainstream outlets, I'm not sure by what logic you can say 4e is failing, at least not via anecdotal evidence from your FLGSs.

I was just trying to think of the most broken melee build possible when mashing really incompatible editions together. If I were actually in your position I'd probably just run, run away!

What setting are they running? If they allow Eberron or Points of Light stuff then you be a Warforged Fighter/Cleric with 4e Powers and 3.x feat chains.

...It seems awful soon for 5E talk. They should wait till like 2015 at the earliest. I think it should probably launch with a fully-produced video game that emphasizes what's new and fun about the edition. I've been wanting a 4E video game and it looks like they only they're they're doing is some ha...

If your problem is 'fights go on too long' then you can easily fix that by just lowering the monster's hit points or just adding extra damage to the players' damage rolls. You don't even have to tell them you're doing these things. Skill challenges aren't integral because they don't have to be used....

Um, okay? I'm not sure what your point is. The math being iffy at levels x-y probably doesn't have any bearing on the sales of the game. If the core system is solid, then the math can be fixed with some minor house rules and errata. I just can't imagine these things having a huge impact on the sales...

Well that's fair enough, but skill challenges are a non-integral element, and something so easy to house rule that it hardly factors into the game balance. I think there have to be tangible and unavoidable balance issues before you can really say a system falls apart at x level. ie Pathfinder, BESM....

While I love the core idea of Essentials (4E system with classes built flavor-down instead of mechanics-up as in the PHBs) I think the Red Box itself is just not really a good value if you're already into the hobby. I already think Dungeons and Dragons is, at it's core, hampered by the restrictivene...

I've never heard about 4E falling apart at high-level play, but I'm sure there are plenty of blogs or vlogs or podcasts about Essentials campaigns somwhere on tthe web. Maybe check RPPR's Actual Plays?

I think it goes without saying that Dungeons and Dragons has never been truly mainstream, even if it was briefly popular enough to get a theatrical movie. It wouldn't surprise me if it hasn't sold well at Walmart and Target. Essentials may have been a marketing misfire, but it's still 4E and an esse...
