What game(s) do you play, and do any of them have mind control/influence magic? In fact, do any of them have magic/implausible-SF at all? Because if they do, then ... The best campaigns I played in/GMed for any length of time (i.e., years) were Earthdawn, Talislanta, Decipher's Middle Earth (all mo...

You might conceivably have a point if I played D&D*. But I really hate that game. *or any game where spells a) compete with skills and b) are so OP that designers felt the need to inflate skill effects to a similarly ridiculous degree, because half a million anally retentive teenagers would neve...

Important die rolls deserve a description not just in terms of the result, but also in terms of a plausible process that led to it. In other words, if I'm going to suspend my disbelief, I demand something to suspend it from . "Look, on page xxx it says that yyy" simply doesn't cut it. Not ...

Judging by this thread, I think a pretty good case can be made for attitude roll modifiers that are way off the RNG.

(Yes, I know this isn't a helpful contribution. An apology would be insincere though.)

What the fuck? <snip> I don't think there's a point in recounting the whole game. Suffice it to say that you can get dom 8 O3 P-3 H1 G1 L-2 M1 with a W9S9 Oracle. That's not so terrible for scales. And things went very differently from your description above; TC was neither the gem leader nor the p...

Depends on the era and setting. I've decided I want my next game to be LA with CBM. If that's the case, count me in. If not I'll be happy to watch from the sidelines.

I don't think Blood Stones are broken. However, 2 of the 3 vanilla MP games I've seen the end of so far were won by the nation that had the most clams. One of them featured EA TC (strong!) with a W9S9 oracle. About 70 clams + Wish = WIN; the gem income from provinces didn't even matter. That's not a...

Giving tarts some competition is one thing, but clamming still breaks the game. Have you considered using CBM 1.92?

Beorn turns into an enormous bear. I'm just putting that out there. And rightly so. However, this ability is not a learned spell à la "druid level 5, and you need a 1st-edition copy of Winnie the Pooh to pull it off", but an expression of his nature, or a birthright if you will. Magic is ...

An endearing feature of the internet is that even if nobody replies to the OP, you can always find somebody who takes the thread OT. But since we're at it and nobody seems to be able/willing to answer my questions anyway, I might as well take the bait and have some fun. Bullshit. - Gandalf is one of...

The One Ring RPG - anybody tried it yet?

A friend gave me the rulebooks in the hope that I'd run a game. I went through them and my first thought was 'mixed bag'. Plus - I like the choice of time and location (Rhovanion after Bard punched Smaug's ticket) - Hardly any magic. Zap-em spells don't belong in a Tolkien setting of course (unless ...

Yeah, I guess that counts as halfway there. But can you do the same for a wizard? I'm really not that familiar with 4e. Somewhat unrelated, I could think of a campaign where the PCs start out as a bunch of orcs from the same village. That's no way to solve the problem we're discussing here, but it c...

Not if you make different races good in the same class in meaningfully different ways. Love to see that, but I don't see how DnD could ever be the game that does it. - Characters in DnD chop up or blow up stuff using a boilerplate set of tools defined by their class and level. - The job description...

Just to be clear: Tenuki and Zinegata are decrying the unfairness and dishonor of one player declaring war on another, having granted the appropriate time for an NAP to expire. For the last time (promise): I got out of this game because you started pulling convenient new rules out of your ass and g...

A large part of late-game acrimony comes from having to work for 50+ turns, and then getting pissed off at other players doing something to ruin all of that - especially if that "something" doesn't actually win the game for those other players. You mean like declaring neutrality and makin...

The management of Pangaea has been successfully transferred into the hands of Winnah; may he live up to his name.

Please direct all future abuse, requests for ass-kicking and offers of surrender to him.

Winnah, who are you taking over for, C'tis or me? If it's me, I've already sent a turn that I put 2 hours or so of work into, which you may or may not want to keep. I can send you the 2h file for approval or modification.

That would only be an option if there were such a thing as a second place in this game. However, the game only defines the position of the Pantokrator. If the new Pantokrator wants to keep a pet dog, that's entirely her decision and has nothing to do with the game. Nice try, though. (I just hope nob...

@shiritai: Let me put it like this (and yes, Frank, I'm expecting you to disagree): You apparently don't care much about winning the game, otherwise your primary goal at this point would be to stop Marignon from doing so in a few turns. [EDIT: Or at least you wouldn't interfere with those who are wi...

Man's gonna hate me for it, but I think Zine is right. Also, I wouldn't be so sure about Jotunheim's attacking Pan entailing a "medium chance of victory". - Despite technically superior forces locally, a massive research advantage and having the initiative, Jotunheim has been dropping uniq...
