New players had to gamble around 100 USD to get into D&D at an entry level, and that scenario included sharing the PHB among an entire playgroup. Once all 4 of your players got a PHB, you're looking at over 200 bucks. That's a *steep* initial investment. Period. As opposed to what? I don't unde...

I'm of the opinion that if you think that that D&D is too cost prohibitive to get into, you probably have more important problems to deal with than wonder how you're going to afford another book of rules on how to pretend to be an Elf.

Too much emphasis on building and you do end up with Warcraft. I don't agree with the Warcraft comment but I do agree that we're spending a lot of time on Social improvements and logistics at the moment. I figure that if we can get this part of the game to work, it gives us more time to work on the...

Then a few (a lot of) questions. 1) What is the Action Economy for kingdom scale? What does a turn represent in terms of time? What actions can you perform in a turn and how many times can you perform those actions? 2) What is the point of having more points in a Resource? What is the impact of gett...

Also, how do players improve their profit checks? If it's harder to improve higher numbers, players are just going to improve every province in turn and they're all going to be equal (this is the optimum solution). If it's as difficult to improve higher numbers as lower numbers, they'll invest in o...

And if a kingdom has no magical superiority, they're just chumps. You don't want to field an army to take out a nation of orcs that'd be stupid, because you're just losing men for no purpose. A high level wizard could take them out in a few days without any losses at all. It Does Not Matter. We sti...

No, it really doesn't. Normal troops don't do anything anyone cares about, so being able to kill them is a trivial ability. Any smart kingdom would just not put regular troops on the battlefield at all. Regular troops is the crap that comes in later to occupy the place, assuming you don't just deci...

Wrathzog, well, kingdoms and armies go hand in hand, or so I'd think? I think it started with me trying to say armies were useless, and then propose alternate benefits for having kingdoms that had nothing to do with armies. If it's not an aspect of kingdoms you want to discuss, I don't mind shuttin...

Can we move this 3.5 battlefield bullshit fest to another thread? It's getting in the way of Kingdom Simulation. And as far as holding territory I said it was an okay resistance tactic once you've already been occupied, but you have to wait until Superman leaves before you can do anything. But if yo...

Not a system, but the paradigms that come with it. I'm sorry that I keep using 3E as the example because it seems to distract people... but it's the system where power disparity is extremely obvious. So, I'm going to ask again and try to keep it system generic to avoid confusion, do we have Heroes i...

So, let's rewind a bit. Are we assuming that we have people running around with 3E power levels? If so, what is the power disparity between War Wizard and Peasant with a Spear? How cost effective Are War Wizards in comparison to just hiring tens of thousands of peasants with Spears? (I bet he costs ...

That's not what I was talking about at all. I'm talking about whether or not personal power can eventually match or exceed that of society's. If we have people like Elminster, Hercules, or Lu Bu in our world, we need to track them because those are people that possess the ability to impact things at...

If we're building this off of something like 3E, then we're going to need to keep track of mid to high level adventurers in the kingdom. Just like NPC kings, we occasionally have an issue that we don't want to deal with ourselves but can't send the army because we'd lose the army. So, we hire Joe Ad...

They might not notice anything if the HPs are sufficintly ridiculous, but it does make the combat system and class balancing in 4e irrelevant behind the screen.... the entire Striker role, along with any feats that pump up damage (e.g. rapier proficiency, TWF), weapons that have a +2 accuracy bonus...

This thread moves too damn fast. That's just my point. D&D doesn't have rules for all those things, the army managing aspect is mutually exclusive for what D&D tries to do. The basic assumption in D&D is that mass combat is basically a waste of time because combat is won and lost by supe...

On Spells and.. Stuff Dude, you know what the best part of having authority is? Delegation. As long as you have the power to influence other people to act in your interests, you are golden. D&D is a combat game. I just don't see any point trying to go beyond that and pretend it can be Empire: Total War, SimCity or SimEarth. Because it's just not. The more you go that direction, the more you're just having your DM purely make shit up. Easier to just use a homebrew rules lite system...

In a 4e type setup, it'd take you 4 or 5 hits to take down a monster and the damage rolls don't change this much. I've been experimenting with this in a 4E game I've been running using pretty much that exact metric. I just keep track of how many times a monster's been hit instead of actually keepin...

It seems relatively simple conceptually: The game is formed of layers.... more stuff... ... Layers! I can kind of see where you're going with this but how do you decide what goes in what layers? Sure, but there will be a threshold (thresholds?). There comes a point when someone graduates from swinging a sword once a round to consuming 1d10 orcs every round to straight up obliterating armies with one swing of your mighty death sword. I mean, alternatively, you could eventually gain an attack...
