You should start with your desired probability of success and work backwards from there. For example (in the case of a d20 roll), if you wish for the player to have a 50% chance of success, and the player will have an average bonus of +12 to the roll at the level in question, then the DC should be 2...

For the purpose of clarity, I'd like to set the ground condition that we are discussing high-level play for the duration of this discussion, as that's where class balance issues are known to be the most severe. Here is the most important thing. There is NO optimal tactic. D&D doesnt work like th...

Okay, so we've now identified two types of independent depth factors: unsolvable and not feasibly solvable. There is of course the risk that as player access to computing resources increases, situations that may have once been unsolvable in active play can become solvable, although discussing it is ...

Doesn't having it be the latter simply delay the problem? I'd posit that for true, long-term depth, it needs to be unsolvable even for known parameters, probably by the inclusion of some kind of random mechanic (e.g. dice).

stuff Not exactly true. More to the point that some problems do NOT exist with the game IF played cooperatively, and that people are CAUSING problems the game doesnt have when they do NOT work cooperatively. I am saying a fish swims fine, while others are saying a fish on dry land cannot swim; beca...

The OP makes an interesting list of behaviors which indicate lack of depth, but the 'knot-cutting' post sends rest of the thread into a spiral of "you're doing it wrong" back and forth. What was the intended thing to scrutinize here? If I understand Frank's argument correctly, what he's sa...

It sounds to me like most of you are actually arguing different arguments. Shadzar seems convinced that whatever problems the system might have can be overcome by players working cooperatively, while most of the others (especially Plebian) are arguing an entirely different point, which is that the s...
