Rich Baker is the headline author on the 4e Dark Sun material. I think him going away during this year's Christmas layoffs says more about Dark Sun failing to live up to expectations than it does about the overall quality of his writing or designs. -Username17 How could it have? They pretty much ca...

In short. If I want to watch Bruce Lee, I will rent a DVD. Second, in order to be engaged in a game, I like to have meaningful choices. Exactly. This is more about making a better game and all at-will powers is boring as shit, because you just find the best one and you keep using that. I could real...

Effect: You pull each target 2 squares to a space adjacent to you. You cannot pull a target that cannot end adjacent to you. You then make a close attack targeting each adjacent enemy. That's covered. The problem outlined in my example specifically specifically arises from the result of trying to e...

You find 'Come and Get It' to be crazily dissociated. To me it seems pretty obvious: you taunt your enemy, pretend to drop your guard, make him want to take a stab at you, and then clobber him when he gets close. Why does it work against guys with ranged attacks? Well they can make stupid decisions...

When I've played defenders I've used forced movement all the time, even if only to round monsters up or to keep them under control. I've used it to push monsters away so that I can move to a more advantageous position without taking opportunity attacks. I've also used it to push dazed or prone monst...

God, the barbarian. It shouldn't be just a 'merely' above-average striker, it really shouldn't. The class has great feats, great magical support, excellent class features, encounter powers that are just slightly weaker than a ranger's, and some pretty solid paragon paths. The problem is their daily...

I'm dubious about refluffling, especially after playing 4E. If I want to play a necromancer, and there is no necromancer class, people will say just refluff a shaman. But what happens when a necromancer class is released but it is inferior to a shaman mechanically? Should I be forced to play the new...

If I fall from 10,000 feet and fail to die from damage (produce an agreed upon absurd result) That isn't actually an absurd result. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Chisov http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Alkemade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Magee http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesna_Vulo...

Hmmm. Whether you call them rules or guidelines doesn't really matter. A guideline can still be a broken rule in situations when it is used as a rule. If I fall from 10,000 feet and fail to die from damage (produce an agreed upon absurd result) then the fact that according to the book the rules are ...

I think, with some of the earlier editions, you could possibly draw a distinction between rules that are incomplete and rules that are broken. Certainly if rules for something don't exist and I make them up, then I'm not fixing a broken rule. (Arguably I could be fixing a broken game - but the mere ...

It exists pretty much by definition. A rule is broken if it doesn't work (i.e produces absurd results when applied that can be agreed to be unintend or absurd.) If you change the rule or fix it to avoid brokenness then you are implicitly admitting the original error. There's a clear logical problem ...

The problem with the Oberoni fallacy is that it says nothing about how important a broken rule is to the playability of the game. An obvious example would be if a new weapon was introduced into a game in which all weapons either to 1 or two dice of damage. Due to a typo the new weapon does 11d6 rat...

How is it fine? From what I've heard, it basically tells item crafters to fuck off and is a lazy excuse for not making good items. I actually like that. I want there to be stuff you can find that's special, but at the same time, I realize that the system is based around you needing magic items to s...

I don't think it's necessary that possible character types be thrown so wide open. You need to give some thought to the identity you want for the game, especially these days when organized play has become so ubiquitous. Are parties of increasingly bizarre characters something that you want to encour...

I actually have to take issue with this: monsters (and villains in general) should have different abilities than the PCs -- this is what keeps them interesting, and keeps the game interesting. Not only that, but these unique abilities can often be used as plot catalysts. if monsters just have the s...

If people are spending 3-4 hours on character and enjoying it (without irritating other people) that's a huge plus for your game. It invests people in your product coming and going; they keep the game in mind when there's not a game available AND it gives them an incentive to look for other groups ...

They really need to question some of the underlying assumptions of both editions. Prestige classes/Paragon paths, Feats, the entire build culture. These things may help to set up the supplement treadmill, but they also shorten the life of the game through power creep or erratta and risk making the g...

And seriously, for book conan, what exactly about those quotes was inconsistent? He can take 50 dudes. Full stop. He is that fucking strong and fast and his armor is awesome. Sure, that's roughly his limit, but that isn't inconsistent in and of itself. When does he take 50 dudes? I remember there a...
