Though, aren't the dragon believers in gender equality? You see male and female doing the same sort of things on both sides. Kitiara's an evil human lord with dragon buddies, and then Tanis's other girlfriend is an elf princess who becomes the team good leader... but was it with the sponsorship of ...

My vague memory of Chrono Cross is that casting spells of certain colors powers up that element in the battle. I could see a kind of chaos magic with some control happen where certain color levels are hit, or if two colors clash like casting fire after lots of water spells has a chance of causing mi...

On the 'feel' of a 'real cool moving around sword fight' we can talk about real world concepts of "tempo" and "measure"/"Distance" Some articles I looked at today: https://www.fencing.net/455/its-all-about-tempo/ http://www.rapier-fight.com/PART_V_DISTANCE_AND_MEASURE.h...

As a joke a decade ago I wrote something like "Make a Roleplay check vs appropriate DC to have the effects of a level appropriate spell play out", as the spell list seems to be the pillar all balance revolves around.

"if the NPCs really had any agency, they’d be hunting down the PCs with all the monsters in the dungeon instead of allowing themselves to be picked off piecemeal" That sounds like a good hook for playing Logistics & Dragons as part of the core game. The evil lord is fighting against mu...

Im trying to figure out what my plan for 'bullshit time' is, but most boss battles I've played through or read about in adventure paths have a fresh boss in their home and the PC's are on the offensive through multiple encounters to reach them. Say if the players had some NPC minions already assault...

bonking yourself with a hammer is goofy, but I think being imbalanced, stunned, having a penalty to act or giving a bonus for badguys to act upon you is a good use of a 'fumble' table. On 'fumbles', I want to move away from the D&D "ha ha 1 in 20 chance to crit or humilating fumble!" a...

Resource management provides three functions: 1) Provide reasons for people to wait and not advance and/or a resource to measure attrition against. 2) Provide decision making opportunities to the players so that combat isn't a solved state. 3) Set up opportunities to leverage asynchronous power in ...

What's the fun of having both Daily & Encounter recharges?

So much digital ink has been spilt over 1 encounter workdays vs "ha ha vietnamese kobolds constantly harass you into the night no rest!!" and so on. All these different discussions hinge on some D&D characters not having a weardown mechanic other than HP, others recharging every short ...

I first saw something like this in the board game Crystal Clans - whenever you use an action, the initiative tracker moved its cost towards your opponent's side. When it crossed over, it became your opponent's turn. It's an interesting idea but the game never really seemed to make it worthwhile to ...

Re: Miscast risks as a balancing system for magic

Warhammer-derived RPGs typically use the possibility of miscasts as a balancing lever for powerful spells. How viable is this? Is it worth an analysis across multiple systems? If the risk is in the player's hands it can feel like risk in Poker or Blackjack. If the risk is random and happens for any...

Re: (HB) Most Social Actions Should Not Target Characters.

Most Social Actions Should Not Target People. Persuasion Mechanics Are Incomplete. Maybe You Can Have A Little Persuasion, As A Treat. The gap is instead the lack of good tools and guidelines on how to create good social encounters. To demonstrate: For combat, D&D has plenty of tools like map s...

A statue becomes a corpse? With bones? What if it's a skeleton statue does it turn meaty with teeny bones inside or just meat or all bone?

That is super interesting. I haven't seen it before either. Is there a way to end your turn other than spending memory until you run out? What happens if you run out of (playable) cards? (Is that even possible?) Yeah you can voluntarily end turn but the gauge shifts to 3 on opponent, so rarely do y...

Come to think of it the Good Cop Bad Cop routine fits into the Hopes & Fears concept, one generates a hope and the other generates a fear that doubles to push someone to the desired action.

Most of that 322 page count is spells yeah? Replacing the spells list with something shorter, more universal like Shadowrun 4e building magic would cut it down a lot.
