Seems more a matter of execution than the rules themselves. Many casual card games make use of interrupt mechanics so it's not particularly difficult to grasp
If you had your interrupt abilities on a card held in your hand, like in M:tG or card games such as Asshole, people would use them more often.

I like the idea of picking Class tracks. It's rather difficult to read at points. The flavor text isn't very engaging for me either. Some of the artwork is quite solid (say the Barbarian and Paladin), but others really need work (the Ranger's boring look made me skip over that section on my initial ...

How do you handle the Paladin and Swordmage in this multiclassing system Should the Paladin be its own class that multiclasses with others, or should Fighter/Priest be the way to construct a Paladin (and Priest/Fighter as cleric?) What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? If the goal is mor...

Yeah, RIFTS books are a blast to read. I like Eric Wujcick's writing in particular. Whatever else can be said about Pathfinder, it certainly READS a lot better than 4ed or any came I could make personally (I tend towards bare bones when it comes to rule text, which works fine in play but isn't going...

How often should an attack miss, how many hits should kill?
This is about the pacing of combat, and combat is in a large part paced by how fast you can kill the badguys. Player and DM sides welcome. How often can you tolerate missing in combat? How many whacks do you usually take at a monster before you start thinking "man this is a grind!" ? Diffe...

Pathfinder is more successful than anything you could design
Pathfinder is mechanically a deeply, deeply flawed game. This was pointed out many times by denizens of the Den, and a bunch of you were booted out for it. Pathfinder is a wild success, Pathfinder is the new D&D standard. Best seller, etc. etc. etc. and dog crap rules have not hurt them at all. ...

So, has any tabletop RPG done something like FFXI multiclassing? I believe XI was inspired by the Japanese RPG Sword World (Lodoss War setting), where the main/sub system is the standard way of creating characters, though in that the subjobs are not picked from the main but stand alone as exclusivel...

Some ideal for me would be like making a multicolor deck in M:tG. The thought makes me feel warm and fuzzy, don't know how I'd do that in execution though. With FFXI main/subjobs, another criticism could be that the effectiveness of a subjob is also dependent on your level, it can change depending o...

Re: Utility and Combat Spells Occupying the same Slot
Characters in 4e can do short distance teleportation as part of their attack routines but can't hop to the other side of a door out of combat. They can murder half a dozen people with a spinning firestorm shooting out of their sword but can't light a torch. That kind of shit is shit. Isn't that the...

Re: Which Multiclassing Power Paradigm is Best? ToB? 4E? Else?
FFXI had a nice way of doing it with main jobs and subjobs... though I see it's already been mentioned. That's surprising, most D&D players don't know about it. A good amount's already been said. It's pretty interesting to see the differences between Samurai/Warrior, Warrior/Samurai, Samurai/Dan...

You raise a good point, functionally you still have your complexities, it's the difference in presentation. 4e's biggest weakness is how it presented itself. Stating roles, having a shared structure of level advancement, 'too video gamey (despite Every Other Edition having like a dozen videogames an...

Despite it being acknowledged as a problem, I thought it was odd that the Tome series didn't change the base mechanics of Full Attack We did. We changed the higher level attacks from -0/-5/-10/-15 to -0/-5/-5/-5. It's not actually a very big deal, but it helps higher level fighters more than you'd ...

Are Full Attacks and five foot steps a GOOD thing?
Is 3.X a better game for having full attacks and five foot steps, or is it something the Den has left untouched for the sake of keeping it 3.X?
Would a 3.X where warriors move further than 5ft in combat per turn make for a worse game?
