Re: Are metagame abilities good?

I tend to think it's situational, but that all three of the ones I mentioned work well. I know a bunch of folks here are more sensitive than I am about verisimilitude though, so what's everyone else's opinion? I like them and they've contributed to memorable moments in games. Narratively, it's havi...

-you hit automatically, your target then rolls to evade, if they can. This seems like the same result, but since you're not the one rolling it's less a feeling of "god damn I suck" but "god damn this monster's tough!", since it's the monster rolling the die to avoid your hit. Ou...

What do you find fun in D&D? How do You have fun in D&D?

You guys spend a lot of energy discussing it. Most of the time it's about why X sucks and Y is wrong or Z is a [EDITED], etc. The 'Ideas that need to go away' thread is pretty long, think of this as a compliment to it. I figure it's a lot harder to think of 'ideas that need to stay' But what exactly...

How does the fighter swing his sword? Contraction of muscles? Why do those muscles contract? Does he fire off each one individually or not? What sort of power source do these muscles use? How does it work? Can you explain the minutae of microcelular anatomy? Probably not, and you don't need to. Peo...

I forgot to add, what's your background in terms of fantasy/action literature movies/etc? The kind of stuff you'd be drawing inspiration for in your D&D games, and particularly for D&D warriors. I figure there's some correlation with that and one's gut reaction to "fighter daily powers&...

Opportunity party members, going into a world to explore in any direction you want, sounds like an MMO on paper.

Would you say this puts less stress on the DM? Would this be recommended for newer DMs as it's less about consistency or an overarching plot and more just refereeing their actions.

What is a Ninja?

other than a miserable pile of secrets A minigame I play with any appropriate game system, I try to make a ninja. Sometimes it's a psychic, sometimes it's a cyborg, sometimes a magic user, sometimes a sneaky guy in black. What makes a Ninja a Ninja for you? As an NPC, monster, or PC. I'm not so much...

I hope that 5e is more like the kind of change AD&D->D&D2e was than 2e->3e. Or how M:tG has rules revisions that keep all cards still playable (even if they're terribly weak or banned from play, it's still nice that it's the same format). Invalidating previous edition's rulebooks and charact...

Ideas that need to go away: Rolling to hit. It's not fun to miss. It really sucks to miss with your limited use super attack. A large part of the game is thus stacking bonuses to make sure you hit more often. A run of bad luck can also leave you feeling useless in a 3-6 round fight. The fact that yo...

This is identical to Gav Thorpe's logic, who claimed the exact same thing regarding 40K and Fantasy points values being compared across lists. Something to the tune of '7 points in one list is not the same as 7 points in another list'. You really have to compare army to army. Most units that are un...

The core of the fanbase is grognards who hate change. You can't really expand on that. Look at Pathfinder, it only exists out of spite for a newer edition and it did zero to improve anything. D&D is alive and well, books keep on coming out, the old books didn't suddenly stop existing and there's...

So Salamanders drop... completely normal spears. If the Salamander has a magical weapon, it could be literally anything, as a trophy from some other hapless adventurer that it killed, since Heat works providing the bonus fire damage to any metallic weapon, and as an outsider, if it exists he has pr...

I was thinking of something similar, but in terms of Warhammer Fantasy. So rolling to hit, then to wound. Goons hitting you would lower your toughness but they can't actually inflict a wound, they can only soften you up. A Worthy Foe though is going to be rolling to wound against your toughness. Thi...

Thanks for the posts. The blog is also very handy, I'll have to loot it of info and pretend it was my own idea all along.

It seems a large part of it is 'anticipation', having people realize their next action will have some kind of consequence while avoiding the "ZAP" trap

I'll have to disagree with Shadzar and Lago on this, there's nothing overly narrow about focusing on a particular weapon, It's a fine part of character identity. Some people will care more than others and it varies from concept to concept. To go down a slippery slope, it's like if the Super Stat Boo...

Another important question though is HOW the item is being presented. Yeah maybe sweaters are a sucky christmas present, but if you're naked and it's snowing and you find a sweater in a box, you're going to put it on. Say that rapier fellow is battling against some horrible thing that his pokey swor...

Why would the DM be giving weapons that nobody wants though, especially if it's just a question of flavor? I haven't had this problem with a DM before though. It would be annoying if I had taken Specialization in Great Axes and and I only dig up magic scythes. If the DM is doing that just to be a di...

How do you make exploration/traps FUN?

A lot of great movies and novels have exploration sequences but I haven't really found tabletop rules that quite satisfy me for it. Most tabletop RPG's I've done focus most of the action on combat or just talking with different things, they can do those well, but I'm still looking for a better way t...

The simplest, most versatile solution is just have some Action Point type stuff and fluff it as whatever. Action pointed near the beginning of battle? That was your Dynamic Entry into the fray. Action pointed while bloodied? Yep, yer rage kicked in Action Pointed 'cause the enemie's bloodied? Your B...
