Diplomacy on the water sounded pretty interesting though. The cleric communes with the raging spirits and is granted safe passage. Forging a pass from a kingdom you've never heard of for ghostly guardians, yeah pulling it out of your butt makes it sound like you pulled it out of your butt. That sort...

a lot of people derive their roleplaying experience solely through what's written on their character sheet. Mechanics are very, very important to them as it is the only way to express role playing concepts. if it says 'Rogue', he is a sneaking wiener, even if mechanically he is a heavily armored lan...

Re: Monte Cook Back to Work

Unless you mean Super Street Fighter II Turbo - which isn't exactly a balanced game seeing as Capcom itself issued a rebalance for the damn thing. Here's the index for what and why the lead dev changed in each and every character in it. The guy's just part of Capcom America and he fiddled with the ...

So, how do you become a game designer anyways?

Everyone likes to homebrew ideas with varying degrees of proficiency, but what does it take to get your name stuck in a shiny hard cover book? How about for a big name like D&D or Shadowrun? Did these guys have previous relations with publishers, did they go for an interview, did they wind up pu...

Flavor, gameplay, various playstyles, distinct identities and interesting wo...

Do you think Monte Cook would have done a better job on Tomes than you did? Do you think Monte Cook has ideas that you would've never thought up of, or execute them better than you possibly can? I only found out about this board because you guys spent so much effort on trying to fix 3rd edition, so ...

saber carrying American gentleman sounds cool.Could even have some kind of tricked out hi-tech gun that resembles a civil war revolver, depending on how far that Aristocrat theme wants to go. Wuxia wandering around China to right social wrongs using mono-edged jian also sounds cool. You could tap in...

What I previously described as 'feats' can be called Class, while what I'm currently calling Class can be called 'Archetypes'. Like how AD&D had that chart that said "Rogue: Thief, Bard" and "Fighting (or was it Man at Arms?) Fighter, Ranger, etc." Each "character option...

4e Clarity 3e Customization 2e/AD&D Flavor is my mantra. I think those are the best, most memorable components of each edition. This is how I would go about doing 5e: Keep the class based system, it is Iconic to the D&D identity and the expectations a person has of what his character can do...

Also, please don't call your game "Heartbreaker," because that's stupid. People familiar with Forge lingo will expect your game to be classical fantasy and/or a "retro" homage to mechanics from the 80s. People who aren't will expect it to be about vampires or sex demons or somet...

Dungeonomicon Monk is what I'll be trying out.

Are we still going to be policemen or has Kaelik changed the setting?

Have you heard of Shinobigami? It's a japanese TRPG based around manga pacing.
There are mechanics based for the things you discuss such as figuring out the properties of attacks and so on.

You've made a solid guide, could also be used as a writing guide.

I just wanted to know your intention and goal. Your goal is to create a community, and perhaps find like minded people to further this pursuit. So how are you going to achieve your goal? How will you distribute your personal D&D, do you reach out to recruit new players in your community? For the...

If you took stats away, D&D fans of a previous edition would decry it as false, perhaps compare it to a videogame, and continue playing with what they've been playing for the last 10-30 years of their lives. Most people don't care about the mechanics as much as you guys, and in the end these are...

I have a better chart:

Lawful <----> Chaotic
Good<------>Evil

we can define games by how they fall under this axis of alignment. Now everything is clear.

4e mechanics compared to 3e mechanics

Not discussing the classes that exist within the mechanics, only the bare mechanics themselves and their use. So with that in mind, how do they compare? I know there's a lot of disappointment directed at 4e and how they did D&D classes. But is the criticism how they went about it, or is it with ...

Knowledge and social skills usually use separate attributes, and often when you're good at one you take the other as your dump stat.

You already have all the materials you need to run your favorite edition of D&D. You like player and DM innovation so obviously you don't need more books, in fact that's the opposite of what you like. You've already established these people are retards, what are you going to do about it? Do you ...
