Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
That's good to hear, definitely the vibe I'm going for with them. A little silly and a little bit brighter and cleaner than 40k is these days, but without going so retro I was doing bright yellow instead of metallic gold.

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
The dozer is printed yeah, but so are these parts and the heavy bolters: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/560075794068799499/937598906315976745/unknown.png The heavy bolters and dozer I just grabbed online, but I made these two parts custom for it. It is a Baal Pattern Predator. I got it secon...

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
I definitely wouldn't consider 3d printing to be a money saver unless you really plan on going into it hard, I don't think I've 'recouped the cost' of my machines and materials and it's not even close. That said I do really enjoy it, it offers me a lot of freedom in the miniature painting hobby, and...

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
Yeah absolutely, you can take models and cut them up or shrink them and change things before printing, it doesn't take a lot of experience to do a digital kitbash like this, it was one of the first things I did, the 3d printing community calls it 'remixing' generally. I took the top of a dreadnought...

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
I gotta say, I think GW has always made minis that just don't want to be assembled. The older metal marines, especially the '88 renegades I've been painting, just straight up can't accept their backpacks without clipping and sanding on something. The little smokestack backpack I print has absolutely...

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
That's more than I painted in 2021, they look great. Love the scheme, and I especially like the winged assholes.
I actually ended up getting an air purifier for the room I paint in because of cat and dog hair.

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
I mean, to be fair, even those ones just look a lot like skaven. It's not like skaven are a hard style to copy, model wise they're kind of basic and havent been updated in eons, they all still have a 90s hand sculpted look, anyone could ape it.

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
There are some cases in the early days of Citadel/Games Workshop where the rights to various miniatures were retained by their sculptors or by companies that were working in association with, but the ver'men appear to be a dedicated line of skaven knockoffs (now also OOP) by Harlequin.

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
They did lose a lot of molds to neglect and mismanagement, so it wouldn't be surprising. People do seem pretty keen on the set, so I guess it kind of is a slam dunk after all anyway. I'd never seen those specific dark eldar models so I picked some up... on ebay, for like 15 bucks for 10 lol.

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
Honestly it seems kind of weird to have like, a less complete nostalgia box. Seems like they'd have had a slam dunk if they just went and included the other models and terrain.

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
It's honestly a much more simple effect to achieve than it looks. Base it in steel, paint a little section in brass, then do purple and blue ink over the steel for the other two. Maybe go back over it in a few spots to strengthen the look. It looks great, but it's honestly one of the simplest things...

Nah you're right, he was harder than the rest, and mostly on account of learning to do the stripes. I had trouble with making some of the metal interesting, and I kind of phoned the gun in tbh (the ad he appeared in says that gun is a bolter btw). He's probably the best executed single figure I've d...

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
Well, I haven't painted much since July, but the few things I did paint I'm very happy with. First I did Elric of Melniboné as a gift for my father, who really likes the Elric saga: https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/854190222744092673/910734588790321233/unknown.png Next I did a chaos renegade...

Re: Painting Small and Expensive Plastic People
Nah, I'm not so concerned about that. I spent a good bit of time looking at era appropriate dark angels and decided I wanted to do them somewhat brighter than that, brighter even that the modern official scheme. Going to keep the midtone very dark, but jump up to some pretty bright highlights. Simil...
