So, I could spend $10 on a pamphlet that tells me to make some shit up, or I could spend it on a collection of short stories or other inspirational material.

I can't play a session of savage worlds without being furious. So I have to throw it in conversation, even if it isn't universally agreed as top 3. I'd like to hear more about your issues with Savage Worlds. I keep hearing it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, but it always leaves me a little...

This is a "Silva defines everything in such a way that you have to somehow agree with his point" thread.

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2470/the-extraordinary-adventures-of-baron-munchausen Pretty good summary of it there. Essentially it's a "competitive" story-telling game where you can dispute some aspect of another player's story and they can toss a chip to explain away the dispute or...

Your fundamental issue is that if the spirits are causing enough havoc that stopping them seems important, they aren't unnoticeable. And if they aren't unnoticeable, they aren't doing their masquerade protection job. The entire point of having spirit world shenanigans was so that you could fight st...

Being super aggressive at everyone isn't very conductive to actually discussing things though, pretty much the other side of the coin when it comes to passive-aggressiveness. I gave a perfectly reasonable set of guidelines for examining game quality on page 2, and was met with deafening silence. Pe...

Re: What makes for a good game?

Rules don't matter because the MC can put a bomb under the table and kill everyone in real life so you might as well drop actual cash on books that spend 300 pages telling you to make shit up. That's a compelling argument right there. Anyway... What makes a good game? Well, brace yourself for a bit...

Re: Mythic roleplaying ?

Silva thread? Silva thread. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you, me, Silva, and everyone on The Gaming Den agreed that "mythic rpg" means "rpg with gritty voodoo cops." I then go to the local gaming store and ask for a "mythic rpg." The store clerk will recom...

Re: Mythic roleplaying ?

Well, I meant useful with respect to RGPs. If "mythic rpg" as Silva put it refers to any RPG with elements from real world myths then that term is uselessly broad. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that you, me, Silva, and everyone on The Gaming Den agreed that "mythic rpg" m...

Return to Temple of Elemental Evil was a horrid experience for my group, and for many others from what I hear. The whole "we're going to put a monster you can't beat in the module as a way of chasing your party into the dungeon" means TPKs galore.

Re: Mythic roleplaying ?

Yeah, but that doesn't seem a terribly useful definition of mythic. Which is why I was asking what Silva's goal is. We can argue subjective definitions all day, but a definition can only be objectively good or bad with respect to an objective goal. A useful definition of "mythic" is "...

Re: Mythic roleplaying ?

As for whether your friend's definition is a meaningful one, probably not. Simply having a Greek theme doesn't make something mythic under any normal definition of mythic. The friend's definition (and I find the claim of Silva having friends to be dubious) was guys in sandals fighting Medusas, whic...

How about everyone, especially game designers, take a fucking step back from using Epic, Mythic, Heroic, Cinematic, Furious, etc. to mean "stuff that I find cool" and just say what appeals to you. Exalted: "In this game, you can body slam Cthulhu. Your attack will be more effective if...

The more I hear about Anus World, the more it just seems like the rules should read, in entirety, as follows: "The Storyteller tells a story involving characters you create. If you want to interject an action/event on behalf of your character, state what you want to see happen and roll 2d6. The...

Power fantasies (as in Male Power Fantasies) is what you see in Rambo, Conan and the likes. In other words, the product of an ugly skinny white geek with little dick who never fucked anyone at college, was totally unpopular, and got his ass kicked by everybody. So, in other words, RPG Gamers, parti...

Actually it kind of does. Are you fighting beholders as a way to compensate for a feeling of helplessness in your real life? Then that's a power fantasy. Are you fighting beholders because it's a good way to relax and have fun with your friends? Not a power fantasy . I like reading Snow Crash becau...
