But my cleric has 8 Wisdom and can't cast any spells. OMG TRAP OPTION!!! I disagree, I don't consider metamagic feats an option for someone who can't cast spells in the first place. Which is why I pointed out that bad options aren't options. And obviously so in your case, I'm assuming you were bein...

To be perfectly honest I don't think there is a consenseus around what "epic tier"on the Den. We have a good idea of what it means to be paragon tier. Visit other planes. Get where you want to be with teleport rather than hoofing it. Be a pretty cool guy kill monsters with GTFO abilities ...

power attack should totally not be a feat because even i can power attack when chopping wood; no shit. it's a part of the core mechanic. weapon finesse shouldn't be a feat for the exact same reason. [edit] and i pointed that out on the first page. no feat chains. no feats granting numerical bonuses...

as for haggling... diplomacy is not the only aspect. actually the first skill you should check is appraise. haggling is a way to determine a particular product's worth. since western society has several ways to measure qualities of products of any kind, there is little to no room left for haggling. ...

Epic Tier. You care more about creating your own pocket universe, or securing the prosperity of your worshipers to maintain and improve your deity status. Things are more like Sim City than Diablo. Going toe to toe with another deity would have disastrous repercussions upon your holdings and your o...

you've just answered your own question. you don't play no fuckin "thief". there ought to be no fuckin "thief" in a class based system. as well as there shouldn't be a "fighter". there should be an "assassin" or a "berserker". I don't think so. It do...

but that's the point: dnd goes into this territory in epic play. characters become unkillable, immortal, able to snip their fingers and just go where they want and they do stop time and alter the past. God dammit no it does not . Have you ever read a high-level spell? They are variations on becomin...

Zugschef: That's the most arbitrary set of examples you could have provided. Here, let me show you: -> don't make rage a class feature. make it a feat. if you think that a particular class should have it because it's part of its schtick then it gets it for free. -> make evasion a class feature and ...

Just thinking about it, the idea of some / all feats being selectable by any class seems like a bad idea. If you choose to play a Class-based game, you should agree that your character class concept has meaning. Otherwise why play a game with a class called a "Thief"? Generic feature desi...

The problem isn't the tiering of progression, the problem is the imbalance of progression. There's no reason that 'epic tier' needs to be, conceptually or mechanically, "Space Time Is My Bitch". At some point your character becomes too godlike to be interesting. That's the whole reasons l...

Classic Dr. Strange is probably a better example for the Epic Teir. Obi Wan does nothing except give cryptic advice all day long. Classic Doctor Strange kicks all sorts of ass in ways that make you think that the writer must have been on LSD. obi wan is like: i don't care. i wait 80 years and you'r...

So, lets go with that -- and now we're a little closer to apples-to-apples (because let's be honest, in a game where we have the scout, swashbuckler, and berserker classes, the "wizard" is way to generic to be considered a single class) no argument here. and i'm not totally opposed to kee...

Ew. I'd say don't use Conan for an example if you haven't read the stories he is the main character in. well, i was talking about the movie, as should have been cear by me writing "NAU" instead of "now". and i bet that a lot more people have seen the schwarzenegger movie than re...

Tiering Advancement in DnD

So a lot of people talk about how it's ok to stab people in the face in heroic tier, but if it's still the only thing you can do in paragon tier, you're a liability. That's indisputably true, of course. So let's try tiering levels in DnD by essential abilities. *** Heroic Tier: "I stabs teh peo...

Re: The problem of social systems

yet if you compare a wizard20 to another wizard20 you won't look at the feats they chose first. you sure as hell look at their spellbook. No I would not. What are you smoking? Re: Class Features vs. Feats

When I began to reflect upon 3rd Edition rules, the first thing which seemed totally arbitrary was the distinction between a class feature and a feat. This lead to the question: Why design a class based game and then decide to include a generic part? The purpose of feats seems pretty clear: they're...
