How is Tussock always so wrong? As Woot says, when your definition of portals is that broad, it becomes a useless term. If tussock or anyone else can tell me how the "Out of Gas" episode of Firefly can be more plausibly interpreted as an instance of portal travel rather than as an analogue...

The last day or two, I've been getting pulses of pain in my left ear, in the lower part of the antitragus. I can scratch, flick, pinch, and do other stuff to it without any pain or reaction (compared to normal); so it's not tender. There's no reddness or other signs of inflammation. This morning, fo...

The thing about 12 attacks is that if 16 enemies decide to split evenly between the players and the player characters can eliminate an enemy every single round, then that's 4 enemies per character that would expect to attack 10 times if they get initiative and 6 times if they don't (4,3,2,1 or 3,2,...

Virgil may be ignoring some important math for the 16 lemures (12 attacks is not very many, Virgil) I'm fairly certain I'm not missing the math there; no, 12 attacks is not many, but that's pre- mage armor , and the whole thing fluctuates wildly with context (with or without allies, which spells, e...

.35 per attack

but I find it instructive that you skipped over the first listed Cleric on the sample characters list FYI. I literally did not notice the first cleric. The characters I grabbed were both the first ones I noticed (within my personal restriction of fighter-wizard-rogue-cleric) and the only ones I dow...

Against lemures, let's take a standard adventuring party of a human fighter, high elf wizard, halfling rogue, & human cleric , only this time, they stand and fight rather than spend the entire time running... [*] the cleric is literally invulnerable to a standard attack. It will take eight lemur...

Already acknowledged. Though, really, this is essentially the case for all prior editions to treat the first level or two differently from the rest when it comes to capability.

HD type is whatever generates the hit point range I want. I do agree that it looks like the dretches & spinagons are too tough for level 1 players. From my math, however, I think four starting PCs could potentially take on 16 lemures. For the spinagons, I'd estimate it's more accurate for them t...

I am not sure how having 15hp is confusing and I thought the tag was clear that this is presuming everything is using D&D 5e rules, but with different monster stat blocks

Tiers and categories are a substitute for challenge rating, and tiers are clearly labeled with their intended groupings.

[5E] Monster Manual Variant

Long story short, I want to have a more consistently designed monster manual. However, I'm not as experienced with 5E's functional dynamics to properly estimate some of the numbers, and I'm wanting some opinions of what I've got crafted thus far. Goal: To write up a monster manual around more guidel...

Star Trek Adventures

I've got a player interested in trying out the fairly new Star Trek RPG that's come out, which uses the 2d20 system. The mechanics are, ironically but not surprisingly, less than stellar - but they're more serviceable than the last time I've seen an RPG try to handle Starfleet. The real question I'm...

People focusing their animosity on third party voters need to remember there are more people who don’t vote at all. They need to acknowledge and respect that the duopoly we are offered is violent oppression and stop victim blaming people for how they respond while doing nothing to end the abuse. No...

5E Poison Standardization Variant

Long story short, I'm looking at making poison rules more standardized. Poisoned: You have disadvantage on attacks and ability checks. Blighted: You cannot spend hit dice to recover hit points from short or long rests. You cannot make saving throws to remove the poisoned condition. Standardized Pois...

Tussock, your half-remembered history grognard ramblings (19th century quarantine practices of New Zealand, wtf...) are less than helpful. @Ogrebattle - Antariuk's suggestion really is a great idea for a foundation. Having a messenger network supported with subsidized lodgings would support a number...

Tussock, your (lack of) understanding of history continues to amaze me... Inns appeared in England in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries... There's a royal statute from 13th century England very specifically citing hostels & inns. I mean, hell, inns were a major feature in Canterbury Tales - s...

The question wasn't about overlapping fields, but about sequential ones. What if you have three people with portable shields standing in a row, 1m apart, and you attempt to fire a beam that passes through all three. Or if you make your Visualization check and shape your Warp Field into a coil, such ...

Unless Space Rangers are children or little people, I take it the personal cloaking/shield wandtech devices are intended to be used while crouching or something? If you have multiple Warp Shields blocking a target (or one Warp Shield shaped to have multiple air-gaped layers), do you just apply the s...

I don't know if this would be cheap or not, but I can imagine a specialized ray gun for bandits on the Martian frontier - something like a Mark I Orgone ray gun with Charge Boost or Focused Emitter.

I love M&M, but it's not different from D&D, in that you still roll to hit, roll for damage, and note down effects. This level of reductionism is too far to be useful, IMO. A really simple resolution system would be something like the Amber RPG , where both sides point out any conflating en...
