Ok, elaborating further on what Ice9 said (“impactful decisions are proportionally contrary to granular processes”), I think this can be clearly illustrated in Gurps. For example, an attack in Gurps has me “deciding” on a lot of minor things: positioning (moving ? static ?), stance (Offensive ? Defe...

"A game is a series of interesting decisions"
- Sid Meier. In a couple of other threads I've noted that there are some games that have left me feeling unsatisfied in play. In general, there's a big class of rules-light I don't get on with, and likewise I don't like crunchy, complicated stuff. But, on the other hand, I both like big-book D&D...

That's what NPCs are for. You can have a game where the PCs all work for the same faction, or alliance of factions, and have other factions around to backstab. But then its not really a game of intrigue, is it ? The point of such a game, I think, is modeling the kind of fiction seen in series like ...

Isn't the answer any game system? If you use rules just as randomizers, then yes, any system will do. But if you use rules to achieve specific goals and behaviours, then no, its not something that any system can do well, and you will need rules suited specifically for it. Though I admit there is a ...

Silva , even if those games are bad, their parts can be useful to cannabalize for games in general. I think looking at other games than all these *World-hacks, Indies or such, could do you some good. One gets ideas from all kinds of sources, stick to similar ones, and those ideas will get stale. Th...

You know what ? I just came to realize that the kind of political intrigue Vampire proposes is indeed rare to find*, but the kind of interpersonal intrigue seen on TV series these days is not. In fact, it seems to be the new thing in the hobby, as there is a FUCKTON games doing exactly that, and mos...

Sendaz, dont know why but your idea made me wonder how an hypothetical Game of Thrones with clones would be. Not just CoC/BRP/Runequest. I've met fans of rules invisibility who played a stripped down versions of many different games including Gurps and Rolemaster. True. Interesting that mo...

Game of Thrones-like political backstabbing ?
(cross-posted here ) Strangely enough, there hasn't been a great politics/backstabbing TTRPG since [Vampire the Masquerade]. You'd think with as popular as the Game of Thrones TV show is, someone would be totally down to exploit this. I agree. See, even if we do have some nice games covering the top...

Strangely enough, there hasn't been a great politics/backstabbing TTRPG since. You'd think with as popular as the Game of Thrones TV show is, someone would be totally down to exploit this. Take a look at some PbtA games. Monsterhearts and Sagas of the Icelanders have that in spades. The only other ...

Furthermore, it did so (as per Call of Cthulhu and Rifts) in spite of poor design decisions. There's a comment about people liking Call of Cthulhu for (reasons, which are accurate) - yes, but the design is still awful. Hence my original advice to aspiring designers: DESPAIR. Lol. Spot on, my good d...

Ary, Hotline Miami 2 rocks. I looooove it. Look out for the fatty Kung-fu dude (Jake, I think): after you finish the game for the first time, he unlocks a new mask that gives him nunchucks and Bruce Lee combos. A tablet. In theory, it should let me have an easier time reading RPG PDFs, but in practi...

I'd much rather play a woefully under-powered but interesting character. Count me in, then. Most of my characters were underpowered rules-wise, but full of instantly playable hooks. Sadly though, most GMs I played with were more interested in telling their little stories than exploring their player...

I'm not disagreeing with Longes, about what makes CoC a success. I'm just saying that plenty of locals think the CoC rules are garbage, but that a specific rules light playing style that the CoC rules support reasonably well is good enough rules support to help turn the game into a classic. Yep, it...
