@ SW bennies = "blow the DM for power": I think this is supposed to be on purpose. The intent is to encourage a certain type of behavior at the table. I'm not saying that this is a good way to do it; but I can appreciate the goal. I knew a guy who really liked SW, and his attitude was &quo...

It matters what you do with the stats. And if what you want to do, apparently, is have large numbers of "secondary" derived stats of "X+Y" then you are probably best off with a "base attribute+specific skill" setup with lots of specific skills but only a small number o...

I've done grognards in my RL gaming groups the courtesy of linking to such resources, and they've willfully ignored them, dismissing them as "just some people on forums". These people think they're advanced players by virtue of playing the game in a grossly suboptimal way for an extended ...

If all you're after is (Str+Con)/2 type functions, yeah, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. I thought I had was something along the lines of: * start with 12-15 primary attributes, * mix-mash those in some fashion to get some # of secondary stats (1st derivative) - these would be the stats...

Derived Stats: how far is too far?

This is a question of First Principles (I'm having trouble figuring out how to effectively explain the concept, so bear with me): How many derivatives are acceptable when generating stats for an RPG PC? For example: A primary stat would be like attributes. Secondary stat (or, 1st derivative) would b...

I was reading further on the "Designer Notes". I'm really shaking my head: the Core book will explicitly contain the "bare bones" of the system.

Fuck it, Frank's spot on.

"difficulty" is the # of successes need to successfully complete the task. "threshold" refers to extra successes above and beyond what is needed. Sometimes "threshold successes" give you extra effects (mainly combat; but also gives you free reign to narrate just how awe...

Thresholds change, but the # on the die is always 7.

Yeah, the default is 1 success = successful.
sometimes you have conditions that cancel-out or subtract successes.
I don't know anything about TNs other than 7.

I dont have to read a game to know it has problems. The bazillion online reviews and discussions available allow me to take a very good picture of most games out there and their problems (or qualities), like Rolemaster over-reliance on table-consulting, Vampire the Masquerade fluff-crunch schizophr...

Point taken on the page bloat. But then, it wouldn't be a WW product without the abusive application of filler, would it. From what I understand, they're getting rid of novellas, and actually adding some setting (and maybe some story/metaplot?). That's gotta account for something, doesn't it? It doe...

Any thoughts on Scion: Origins?

I know that everything about Scion was a train wreck, and the people responsible need to be dragged to The Hague. However, it seems that they're giving it a second go: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/main-category/main-forum/scion/70141-what-news-is-there-about-scion-2-0 and I just wanted to see ...

Goddammit silva - is there a thread on this board that you haven't turned in to an AW argument? Seriously dude, just because Story Games is no longer a thing doesn't mean that you have to lead your 1-man crusade to resurrect it. Your issue is with Ron Edwards, not the entire rest of the RPG-playing ...

Here you go guys: Dual-Class Benefits and Restrictions Only humans can be dual-classed characters. To be dual-classed, the character must have scores of 15 or more in the prime requisites of his first class and scores of 17 or more in the prime requisites of any classes he switches to. The character...

There's a reoccurring supportive argument that keeps getting thrown up here, an it needs to stop - i.e., it's waaaay worse than Oberoni. To say "if you get rid of the creepy, skeevy bullshit, then it's a fun game", is completely missing the point of the game. It's functionally equivalent t...

*note: I'm not necessarily endorsing anything in this post. I'm merely making an observation* The way the classes are designed in D&D (at least in the 3.x-type paradigm) is intentionally to enforce the idea of niche protection. The multiclassing rules are specifically intended to dis courage mul...

I know what countdown clocks are - I've been using them for ~20 years. And yes, many people call them plot points. My question was rhetorical. The point I was trying to get at is that when you boil things down, AW doesn't really offer anything new in this respect; and that AW is, in all reality, int...

I just...What? Something offscreen is something which the audience (in this case, the players) cannot perceive. A player cannot perceive something off-screen. That's what off-screen means . It means that in AW and it means that everywhere else, too, which is why off-screen badness has to be announc...

Also: in context of AW, off-screen does , in fact, mean out of scene. Check out the complete set of three examples of "announcing off-screen badness": “You hear gunfire, not too far away. Maybe Hison’s people, hard to know. What do you do?” “Sometime in the night, an explosion wakes you a...
