Re: Let's settle the issue of allies once and for all.

Eh I dunno about that Frank. I'd say that if a character thinks a person is their ally, that person will get the bonus. When revealed to be, say, a Doppleganger instead, the bonuses vanish because *gasp* it's not them.[br]Why would anyone ever bother with Sense Motive? You'd just cast Bless or some...

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

Well do we even want to keep the different energy type and if so which? [br][br]Maybe we just have the DAMAGE spell that does X amount of damage based on your caster level and then players can flavour it by saying the throw a ball of fire or conjure boulders that fall on people's heads. Re: Let's settle the issue of allies once and for all.

[br] Some effects don't count on the target being willing, but rather being an "ally" which what we're trying to define. [br][br]Well, I thought I was suggesting that they are really one and the same. If you are gonna cast a spell or use an ability that might affect me I have to make a dec...

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

I'm not really advocating exactly what this book is talking (the elements go a bit far and I don't really like elements as central aspects of spells or the universe anyway) about but I do like some of the ideas like why do you need highly specialized spells for everything. We do need some form of di...

Re: Let's settle the issue of allies once and for all.

I think being an ally means the effected chooses to let the effect pass his defences (doesn't try to save). This must be a conscious desire by the effected individual. [br][br]Therefore running up to cast healing on a complete stranger who has no reason to know you are trying to help them should try...

I think it is to mantain some kind of coherency for the mechanics rather than an assertion that its really an element. How is darkness and element or space and time. Or water and fire for that matter?

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

Personally I think it'd be a good idea to get away from spell slots in this re-vamped system. Feat granted abilities should just x/day, x/encounter(or x/30 seconds if you prefer), or at will. [br][br]The system in the book i refer to is point based (not that it would have to be adopted) any spell w...

OK well if we are going to run with this we need a list of spell categories that characters would choose from. Re: Breaking GURPS

1191262348[/unixtime]][br]Right, a lot of GURPS is mediated by common sense, but that's not really a mechanical thing. I'm assuming a "crazy go nuts, buy what you want" system, since almost any game can theoretically be policed by the GM just saying no to player choices. [br] [br][br]Yeah...

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

This is in no way a fully formed (or even necessarily particularly well formed) thought but my trains of thought on this spell feat thing kind of go like this:[br][br]You have a set of feats that act as your core spells like blast, protect, manifest illusion, heal, curse, summon/conjure critter… bas...

I didn't get the engine to when I tried it but maybe its just because I'm a luddite when it comes to operating forums.[br][br]I found GURPS ranged combat had way too many variables so I always ended up cheesing it and randomly assigning penalties to my players. Re: Spell lists for everyone!

I was pondering that maybe we could make spells sort like the ROW feats where they go up in level based on caster level or ranks in spellcraft or something like that. Have less of them that just get better as you level up. could then have some which are appropriate for all classes to have. [br][br]A...

Re: Breaking GURPS

I found when playing high point gurps games, players could cheese it by having really high DX and IQ to avoid spending points in skills. You might want to cap max points in attributes to avoid this. Also taking the running skill read that it increased speed which increased dodge so even a low run mi...

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

Well I guess you could have a variation of spell resistance where it allows you to ignore existing effects by making a level check against the caster or something of the like. But then we need to identify what restrictions to put on this ability to not have them just walking around ignoring everythi...

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

Then tool up some kind of feat that gives bonuses to knocking down doors, wall and the whatnot and yer set.

But only really fits the theme of a burly warrior not a dextrous one so you still need something for them.

Of course, the D&D answer 'both at once' is stupid. That doesn't make either option worse, nor does it require people who prefer one or the other to bitch each other out. [br][br]Sure but if you are like me and want to play fighter-types; you need to have the game system accomodate you. And &qu...

Re: Spell lists for everyone!

Right but in this game people seem to want both and it can't happen. D&D is trying to be everybody's fantasy game when different ideas of fantasy styles are simply not compatible. You have to choose what power level you are aiming for in your game; atomic bombs or heroic battles. The two don't c...

Re: enjoying a game dispite it's flaws?

Best game I ever played was oWOD Mage. The only time I've ever really enjoyed playing a spellcaster and having a combat machine in a game where never (well almost never) fought anything. Rules were fuzzy as hell but that let our imaginations run wild. But it also only worked because we were not tryi...

Problem with using swashbucklers is they are not part of a traditional fanatasy setting. Zorro and the three musketeers never do anything that resembles magic in the literature that I remember.[br][br]As for cutting down mountains (Song of Roland right?) ok it might exist in that literature but LOTR...
