Undying

Anyone else playing this? We just had our second session and we're finding it really interesting. It's a Vampire rip-off (kinda) that focuses on feeding and scheming instead of poses or powers.

For more info here is the ol' KS page from 2015: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/892039034/undying

Does Mutant Year Zero's Civilization-like community improvements (School, Tribunal, Suffrage, Communism, etc) counts? To be honest I don't think the idea really works in that game, but hey, the thread is about innovation, regardless if it works or not.

I think actually having a "level 1" character sheet that then gets discarded by advancement is fine. The purpose of the playbook is not necessarily to survive a long-running campaign, it's to accelerate you into playing the game RIGHT FUCKING NOW so you don't spend hours on chargen and yo...

The Quiet Year fits the bill. It's a map-making game where players reconstruct a post-apocalyptic society through improvisation and negotiation using poker chips, until the end of the quiet year comes with some unavoidable disaster and the game ends. There is also The Deep Forest, a variant where pl...

Thanks for the description on Ptolus, Zinegata. I'll try to give it a read. The 1997 Tenra Bansho Zero lets players spend narrative points to decide to some degree what the next scene will be about or insert themselves into a scene. The goal of that game was to make a session feel like an OVA or few...

Violance, I misread your post. Apologies. Your overall reasoning is sound and your previous idea of using tokens to moderate it is neat. I would play in that game. Just notice though, that most moves in PbtA games already have distinct choices for the player to pick, like Shinimazu point to. I would...

@Guts: On the entire Apocalypse/Bear/Whatever world topic, I've tried it. You need a good GM to run it effectively, and even then the game can be prone to disagreements, and the simplicity of it all can be too annoying in I feel like there's no depth to the system. Anyway, a little too MTP for my t...

Interesting reasoning. Could you elaborate, Virgil? From my part I don't think they're dichotomous, but then I may be misunderstanding your point.

That's actually really fucking smart. And it's already in the rules. Page 92, Apoc World 2nd edition. MC Move: "Tell them the possible consequenes and ask". You could, if you were so inclined, add to that concept that if someone else at the table says your proposed "success...

You don't cotton to that reading comprehension, do you Guts? There have been multiple, detailed examples of the rules (and system advice) making "at a cost" be anything at all. There's at least one example of a 10+ being a your mission fails and you need to run for you life . Quote or bus...

Not weighing in on the debate proper but I'm a little confused. The first and so far only game using this system that I've played did outline specific things the player picked from on a 'partial success' roll. Like "On ten you do this thing. On 9-7 you do this thing, but pick an additional thi...

The whole system would be immeasurably improved just by the letting the player decide what "success" and "success at a cost" were going to be before the roll. If we're playing a cooperative storytelling game, why are we leaving all the storytelling arbitration up to one person? ...

It seems to me you have a problem with people coming up with things and situations on the fly, regardless of it's coherence to the fictional context. In that case, I see you will have problems with any role-playing game, as the kind of "ass pull" you cite is inherent to the story-telling a...

Zinegata, never played Shab al hiri roach but I've read it and it looks neat. Do you know other games by the same author? Fiasco, Carolina Death Crawl and Grey Ranks also look interesting.

What about we continue the discussion here? Not talking about Shadowrun or Blades in the Dark specifically but... Modern designers pay great attention to "user interface" and "rules creep", which are sadly two aspects that tabletop RPGs still totally ignore to this day. More spec...

I'm creating another thread for this, if you don't mind, as I think it's starting to get to tangential to the topic of math.
