Of course, action denial can lead to tekken juggling. which isn't fun either. I guess this is mostly going to be a problem with bosses and other solo monsters. Minions and such could still keep fights functional.

The tabletop rules for 40k undervalue space marines and Inquisitors, because they are meant for balance between armies, not for RPG play. I would recommend against trying to use them for an inquisitorial retinue, because the RNGs don't have enough space or room to grow. The difference between an imp...

I think conditions that affect attack rolls should stack, but should always be conditional based on things that are not constant. Bonuses for positioning, special attacks, and similar things should stack. The real problem comes from universal, always active bonuses that push people towards the end o...

Well, remember that they wrote most of 4e before Mearls was hired, so it's not all his fault. The fundamental math was done early in design, and done poorly. He might not have had a chance to change anything about the expected hit points for solo monsters or the average damage of an attack or even w...

They put things with names at least as stupid into 4e core. Those aren't even meant to be flavor text for some secret art, they're actually the names of quite a few core feats.

What about resurrection? it's going to have some real consequences for setting, empire endurance, and actual gameplay. There are quite a few approaches, and it requires thinking through reincarnation a bit more.

In LotR, being big actually does equal being powerful, with exceptions for the Maiar. The Numenoreans, who were essentially just dudes, but longer lived and more hardcore, were also taller. One of the distinguishing features of Aragorn's line and the Steward's line was being six inches to a foot tal...

The problem with the super dragons is really that there is no option for non-super dragons. they make it impossible to play out the traditional fantasy knight vs. dragon battle without the knight being capable of conquering a kingdom singlehanded.

It really depends on how paranoid you run your mind flayers. The possibility exists, but elder brains really don't want to be replaced. On the other hand, a single mind flayer might find some way to break into the wish economy, and then he has infinite wealth. The real question is if it is the rule,...

Epic Rejuvenation sets up things like the King Arthur deal, where the old High King will someday return and bring about a new Golden Age with game mechanics. Also, it really just sets a maximum timeframe for epic characters to reappear, since in a world with Raise Dead effects, they will be brought ...

But then minions' attack bonuses and such approach the edge of the RNG at one end or the other. We still need something to represent creatures that threaten en masse and get slaughtered en masse. We can either write up some sort of stupid swarm template or be stupid and videogamey with our setting. ...

I was talking more spirit bomb/kamehameha type abilities. Some people complained about large characters being restricted to melee brutes. DragonBallZ proves them WRONG. Large characters have to be strong, but they don't need to be melee. I might rewrite this class more seriously with fewer memes if ...

Combining to-hit and damage rolls removes a large portion of flavor and character customizability. Power attack and similar options are not available if the only offensive stat tracked is DPS. At this point, called shots, power attacks, weak but guaranteed attacks, and any other attack that doesn't ...

Also, since strength gain is actually based on overrepair of small amounts of damage from lifting weights, the healing factor means Wolverine can lift more often and for shorter periods and still be helped. He has low-grade super-strength as a side effect of all his other powers. A better thing to l...

When you want characters wading through armies, why bother with actually representing individual mooks? The commander has some ability that just lets him create an Army AoE. no, the rituals system is broken. We need to add in some limiting factor other than or rework the entire economic model. virgileso, could you specify what you mean? One idea I've heard along those lines is that planes work in six dimensions, but to mortals, three of them look the same as the other three. If you're a 3e (core) paladin, you are required to care, no matter what. For the 4e heroes, people might look at it like we do a sport. Everybody is happy when our team is winning, and we hate it when we lose, but it really doesn't affect our actual lives unless we lose a bet or something. Given eno...
