Indeed there are wandering monster charts which can be used to intimidate the PCs from resting. However, in my experience playing the PCs have always been given the opportunity to rest if they need to. That being said, you are of course absolutely right, PCs should definitely practice spamming their...

This is especially the case for a 1E AD&D magic user. Without the spells, the magic user isn't much better than a level 0 human for the first five levels. I propose a new rule. People aren't allowed to make shitty meaningless references to 1e D&D in threads that have nothing to do with 1e. ...

Another possible reason there weren't more classes is because of the power creep from each book. If the old classes weren't supported with new material and new material was instead given to new classes, people would find their Fighters, Paladins, Rogues, etc. obsolete.

It's very good for preplanning areas with set monsters, etc. in them. You are indeed correct, grabbing a stylus or whatever to draw on the board directly in front of the players would be good. Having a huge databank of monsters available in memory is nice, but of course this is a lot of work, and is...

I don't see how rolling a virtual die and watch it virtually spin is better than using OpenRPG and using a random number generator. The problem with all these visual methods is that they don't necessarily make the game run better or faster. The players wanna go to a new area you didn't expect? Well ...

This is of course assuming that your book is of high enough quality that it gets bought, that the book gets enough publicity out to the public to buy it, and that the book isn't released into a saturated market.

So are you arguing that a 1st level fighter should have the same chance of hitting as a 10th level fighter? You are correct that in games, when characters garner up more bonuses the DM will generally hand them harder encounter against enemies with commensurate +s to match the players' +s. And a DM a...

In many ways I think the game would be proved if spells and abilities were written more like Cantrip and Silent Image in that 1 spell has many broad applications. I'd like to see a generic fire spell that can heat or be thrown for damage or something.

Ponderings on my DMing style

I've recently ran 2 games in a shared campaign setting located Here. I've had a 2 year hiatus from 3.5 and have not DMed a game in 3-4 years. With that, here are some aspects of the way I've run my games. 1. Traps are Speedbumps: Generally, I don't like traps, and their use is usually just a damage ...
