I think that is more a problem with individual spells like Charm Person than the mechanic. I mean, at level 6, you can blow all your first level spells on charms and that can get pretty bad. As an example, looking at the first level Sorc/Wiz list, not many look like they would be too bad as at will...

The same can be said for any encounter the Pc's have with monsters. There are rules for combat. No it can't. Because the combat rules are to be used when the PCs are involved. That's the whole point. If combats happen offstage, then its' DM fiat. D&D is not a wargame. It's a skirmish game. You ...

I don't like the idea of daily combat spells. That encourages (and limits) you to only have one hard fight a day. If something is going to be daily, it should be story or character based, and not influence combat. Yeah, it's probably best if you est it not to per day but to something that's much to...

Here are a few example questions crafting rules must answer: -Can your armorers outfit your army in appropriate gear for the upcoming war? -How defensible of an outer wall can your villagers create in the 8 days it will take the Hobgoblin raiding force to get here? What if the party Wizard helps? -...

Aww, now we have the Rocket Launcher Tag edition and the Padded Sumo edition. How cute. What's sad is that the 3.5 power model would have made more sense in 4E and vice versa. in 4E, you're going to grind for a long time, so you really should have like 2-3 powers that you can use each day from each...

My group spends skill points on Craft and Profession skills, right up to high levels. My players all like that stuff and have done from the get-go. YOU might not, the group you play in might not, but that's a long way from nobody caring. Oh, my group has done that sometimes, but it's really skill p...

And that strikes me as what players are doing in 4e. There's trying to use sandpaper to erode this big pile of hit points. I mean, I feel like the monsters and the players should be losing them to old age or lack of food or something. Yeah, 4E went the total opposite way of 3.5. In 4E, every charac...

It depends on the kinda of story you have. On the Hero hand, you have Link. On the other hand, you have Altair or even Kratos. I'd sorta like for a setting to allow me to play all of them, you know? Well even Altair does heroic assassinations. He kills people in broad daylight, with tons of guards ...

I agree with Psychic Robot re: crafting rules. I may never use them, but I appreciate their existing in case I do need them. Suppose the fighter wants to forge his own nifty Asskickery Sword. You can just handwave it, but a rules system gives you a point of reference other than "that sounds ab...

Nope. Just a sadist. Edit: I find that Mourn idiot's new sig particularly amusing. Because with 4e, they could go back to just having str, int and wis. Having 6 stats serves no real purpose anymore. Yeah, I honestly thought that the new 4E stat system was like a way of the deisgners saying "Th...

Sure. If the wizard has no way to perceive an attack coming. If the wizard has no protections up. If the wizard stands in Fireball Formation. If the wizard has no contingency plans. If the wizard has no battlefield control. Etc. Well most of that stuff, barring contingency requires that you get to ...

I never really used items of power because of the off chance of losing the item. Now that is not to say they aren't broken as hell. The group I played with mostly made places of power (ie, Flying fortresses, or airships of awesome) We would usually pool our resources to lighten the cost that way we...

BESM 2E. Everyone in the party is made of awesome and not a single person could be wielding more than just a kitchen knife. I heard that the game is unbalanced as hell. Other than that, are there any problems that I should look out for if I do decide to play it? Leress is correct, most power is hel...

The main point is that this is the caster vs noncaster problem, again. This doesn't support your assertion that "So you actually did get more powerful in comparison as you leveled, but only offensively. Your defenses were still made of fail." You can defend against maze. As to "...th...

The problem is that now you blow skill points on Diplomacy because no matter how high your points, the DM sets the DC to have the chance of success he likes. I think that has to be there, otherwise the game just turns into a diplomacy fest. I really don't want a single table that has a universal DC...

I don't know why you guys hate the skill system, at first glance it seemed to have the stuff you'd want to know to run an adventure. Stuff like: -how far (and high) can I jump? -what's the DC to climb a rope? -How do I stealth past someone or detect a hidden character? -What's the DC to swim in stag...

I do. Why? I mean seriously. WHy do we even bother making a roll for a hero that wants to craft a sword? If he says he wants to be a blacksmith and he's got a forge and everything, then just let him make the damn sword and get on wtih the story. When you get into caring about how many days it takes...

What do you do in `cinematic fantasy'? Line two armies up on a wide field and lead a charge? Wake up the dragon before you try to kill it in honorable single combat? Stand in the middle of a battle and take turns vaunting before getting out of your chariot, throwing your spear, and hacking away wit...

Hell no. Not in D&D 4E, because it went the route of trying to rigidly control what magic items PCs have at each level and working it in "balance assumptions". So, either crafting doesn't exist, or it's a really important piece of the rules. At the point, one's forced to assume it doe...

Anecdotal. Some characters are created as Frenzied Berserkers with Shock Trooper. Not all are. Some keep up with their defenses. Honestly, you're just not going to be able to stand up against a caster as a fighter ever. Mostly because even if your defenses are impossibly high, like a paladin, there...

Or maybe something closer to modern day, where combat is brutal, tactical, and short? However, it's also the Iron Age because of the lack of large societies being able to curtail adventurers. Yeah, I mean and that stuff is fine for a game with guns. In fact, I even prefer it, but brutal and short j...

To solve the binding for more wishes, I just gave my creatures a genie's immunity. That is regardless of what spells you put on him, charm, dominate, binding, whatever. He is always of his own free will to twist the wish. You can get a wish out of him, but you cannot stop him from twisting it.

@Random- characters with critters are going to be a serious problem in 4e. Because of the way damage and hit points work, they're going to be a significant boost in power. Having another guy, who has another attack (regardless of whether its a skeleton or a bear or a faceless mercenary from the hig...

Couple things. First, you don't crit if your attack on a natural 20 couldn't hit the guy's AC to begin with. So the demigod versus wizards thing will never result in a critical, a natural 20 for them is just an autohit, but not a critical. Second I'm not sure if I consider the lack of rules a bad th...
