That's fine. But what are the basics? Is it just the amount of damage taken by the flying creature or do we have to make up rules the take into account all possible reasonable outcomes? Anyway this seems to be getting away from the original thread issue. Put me on the list of liking the idea behind ...

Planning for everything that might come up is impossible. Coming up with a list of everything you can reasonably expect to come up, and having a rule for that, is not. If PCs are expected to try to harpoon dragons, then there should be rules for that; making rules up should be saved for when someth...

I just don't see how you can plan for every situation and not become bogged down with the players or DM sticking their noses in the books to look up what is suppose to happen. Every time someone has to look something up = not fun. It delays the story, it delays the battle, it delays the enjoyment of...

It is a role-playing game. Part role-playing (tea party), part game. The instant you start to micro-manage the game and have everyone scrambling to their books to look up what penalty or niggling bonus they get it detracts from the excitement of the situation. The DM is there to moderate the tea par...

Fallout is actually a terrible system. The massive variation in skill points per level being the most glaring problem. Close behind is the fact that its a level based game where you abilities haven't got much to do with your level. Classless but level based would also be my prefered way to go. I ha...

Wouldn't it be best if it were possible to create a classless system but have examples written out of archetypes? That way you have the easy to put down list of abilities for those who are learning the system but you also gain the flexiblity for those who wish to be more creative with their characte...

Another spellcasting thought
Limit spellcasting to number of spells you can cast per level instead of cast per day. You'd have to balance this out by possibly giving a caster a reliable power similar to a warlocks eldritch blast that doesn't count against spells cast per level. Maybe make a mechanic that allows a caster to exce...

What about limiting a spellcasters ability to cast spells per encounter instead of per day. Of course you would throw out the daily spell progression table because the per encounter spell table would have to have far fewer spells and steeper progression to it. (I know, I know, shades of 4e.) What wo...

Well I will just say that flat out sucks. I may beat my head against this wall for a little longer but that is just because I am stubborn. I still feel like there has to be a way to make a spell-caster relevant in every encounter without making him overpowered and without having to rewrite the whole...

So just increasing the casting time of all spells may be the simplest way to go? Though it will suck for players who play spell casters to have to basically sit around for a couple of rounds of combat and do nothing but prepare to cast a spell. And then they may not even be able to get it off becau...

A charge up system sounds interesting. Though it sounds better to call it a buffer system. In order to get to your big time spells you have to cast some of your smaller spells first. This could be explained that going whole hog and casting a high level spell right at the start would just be too much...

No. It encourages you to nova strike at the beginning of every battle and then go to bed. Why? There is no guarantee that the spell the caster has ends the encounter at that moment and there is a chance that you take damage from casting the spell and casting spells further on in the battle could be...
