The suggestion was based on Kingdom Under Fire, a Xbox game. You've said earlier in the thread that this is basically a single campaign and the rules behind it you're making. So, how do you win this campaign? You can't kill all the invaders because there will always be more in their own country. You...

  Sorry Elennsar, but STW is fucking hilarious. Maybe you should be happy that people are asking questions about it at all than be pissy about where they are asking them. Although I'm pretty sure I can answer that last question: Your an idiot. How am I to know whether the PCs die 2.18281...

My "favourite" house rules are any that you find out after a new player has started playing or a new PC has arrived. Oh yeah, or house rules that "everyone knows" or are "obviously true" that you only find out about when it saves the PC of the DM's girlfriend. The best ...

I'm starting to get the feeling that this is more like a wargame with the DM playing both sides with a couple of soldiers messing about with what's happening. I'm also worried about how many characters will be in a battle at once. Why am I thinking something like Psychonauts with the war game there?...

You know, I started looking up what exactly gritty heroism is and I found that for "gritty heroism" the Gaming Den is second on the list with an Arturius thread. However I couldn't find a definition of it. [hr] Also, I disagree with the "conjure up as much as you can." concept. P...

In the interests of being reasonable here are some suggestions I made in another thread. If you come across a random enemy and you decide to go straight up to it and you take it in turns to hit each other over and over then you have a 50% chance to win. But depending on tactics (yours and the enemie...

Bullshit . Complete, absolute, total fucking bullshit . You are talking completely out of your arse here. You're talking shit. Explain yourself. I haven't done much of that sort of thing because I do not want to pull numbers out of my ass solely for the purpose of crunching numbers, which is the on...

If that spell literally transforms your heart into fire and you are utterly immune to fire, why should you get the benefits of the spell? That almost makes sense in this instance, but should you get more of an effect if you have [Fire vulnerability]? Lets say you have a [Fire] spell that transmutes...

Some thoughts: Lets say we want a system where if you come across a random enemy and you decide to go straight up to it and you take it in turns to hit each other over and over then you have a 50% chance to win. But depending on tactics (yours and the enemies) you can have a 99% chance to win or dow...

You are still affected by stuff not written on your character sheet, even if said stuff does not allow you to use your character sheet fully. ... Apar...

You're never going to be able to come up with something satisfactory for Fire Immunity to do in its own description, because you don't know what all the effects are going to do or even be when you write Fire Immunity. However, when you write an effect , you know god damn well what immunities apply ...

Okay, your right, based on your things you really really want I wasn't being at all productive. Sorry about that. I meant more punishing the PC in non-obvious ways such as making them and the DM spend time sorting out back-up characters, splitting their focus onto a secondary character and so on- ex...

And if you actually care about playing a hero, then play a goddamn hero. If not, don't. Rewarding people for doing good -doesn't- encourage people to be heroic and do good things because it is the right thing to do, it further strengthens the mindset that actions must be rewarded to be worth doing....

Would it make any difference to have an outline of a map now, or not? Not really. Until we've worked out how far apart battles are, how much travelling is going to take place, how large battlefields are, how much choice the players have over the place of battlefield, how much the DM can change the ...

Wait, SunTzuWarmaster, I think you are wrong with your answer to Elennsar. "Axes attack twice as slowly as swords. They do 1.5 times as much damage." In 3 sword attacks you have 3 sword damage and 2 axe attacks for 2 axe damage (1.5*2 is 3 sword damage). On the surface this looks balanced,...

Thanks for the suggestions SunTzuWarmaster. Helplessness and not being able to fight back effectively I can see being very scary and risk seeming, even if I don't kill off the PCs while I do that. Comparing the PCs to random NPC could be useful but could be ignored if the players think if themselves...

I think arguing with Elennsar is getting boring, whoever is right, wrong, or the pettiest. Lets try something constructive. Following the flow of the thread, one of the best ways to have heroic and brave characters is to give the illusion of risk. While some people may not like this, I'd like to foc...

mimeography, though, is going to ensure that important people don't use couriers much and is kind of a paradigm shift (if you'll excuse the jargon). Hmmm... I see what you mean. I put forward the idea mostly to be able to move records about easily. There are a huge amount of records created every d...

Apparently golems can see. I suggest golems on floatstone platforms using semaphore if magical communication is not used. I like that idea. Since golems don't have to be humanoid I can imagine a floatstone with some scaffolding around it with a couple of semaphore golems on top and some spider gole...

I think the floatstone strength ratio (1 m^3/4x8m 2 story building) is a little off. There needs to be much more floatstone in my opinion. That's just an unavoidable result of stones supporting their own mass. Cubes are just much much more massive than useful shapes of any size. For example: a cubi...

OK, here's the question. Why would an adventurer's "base posture", ever not be them defending themselves? I mean why in a combat would the DM ask, "Do you want to try to defend yourself?" And the PC would say no. D&D assumes you aren't playing some suicidal maniac and that i...

No. I want the actions that are supposed to be able to kill them to be capable of generating that outcome. Not "Every single action" or even every single action in combat. But if someone swings at your head, that should be capable of killing you - you should have to prevent it from doing ...

Okay, so you've slightly ignored my example. Fair enough, you've said that you are mostly concerned with risks and actions over a period, not one offs. But how about this: The princess has been captured by evil goblins, and taken to a dungeon somewhere. (in game) Since the DM wants the players to wi...

That makes sense. For optimal floating stone utilization, a city is a giant open-bottomed cathedral. The entire city is a single edifice. Yeah, thats sort of what I was imagining. However, its completely different to any other ideas of floating islands I've ever seen or heard of. That also solves t...

I'm going to try a hypothetical situation here. Imagine the cliche of the group of 1st level adventurers entering a city when they see a guy being mugged, so they try to help him. To make it simple, all the players decided to play melee types. Now, since the DM is using this as a plot hook, he doesn...
