This false dichtomy is getting silly. Look, the reason why more people are playing video games than playing tabletop RPGs is because tabletop RPGs have been for whatever reason doing some hardcore suckage lately. But if you're just going to go 'video games are a technologically superior medium so t...

And if consoles were such a drain on RPG players, you'd think that 1E and 2E would have had way more players. Video games (especially internet video games) have gotten much better/more popular since 2000. Maybe you live in a cave and you haven't noticed, though. I bet more horses were sold in 1910 ...

3E had more players than 1E/2E did, and 3E had a lot more video games to contend with. "Did you know that disco record sales were up 400% for the year ending 1976? If these trends continue... AAY!" :thumb: The fact that RPG players are fewer nowadays has more to do with the godawful quali...

And I don't really know if D&D should be trying to excessively compete there. You have to design a product for people who want to play an RPG, not designing it with the assumption that they'd rather play Smash Brothers instead. Sure, but don't be surprised that the market share for 6e D&D i...

It's impossible to prove how much a game's sales are hurt by "suckiness" as opposed to poor advertising, changing demographics, market fragmentation, etc. But I'm pretty sure that video games are the #1 competitor to "sucky" RPGs and "awesome" RPGs are a distant, dista...

Still if the game sucks, your sales will still be affected (ie. 4E, nWoD). It's impossible to prove how much a game's sales are hurt by "suckiness" as opposed to poor advertising, changing demographics, market fragmentation, etc. But I'm pretty sure that video games are the #1 competitor ...

Well, it's one power that has been nerfed in two separate ways for the same purpose (to remove KAs as a better way of knocking someone out). I guess you could count that as two changes. When I used to play 2nd edition Champions, I ruled that a character's force field would drop as soon as she was kn...

My interpretation has always been that Charm Person makes you Friendly -- no better and no worse. So if you charm your best friend, it actually makes him less friendly. Likewise, you can't improve a Charmed person's attitude; it stays stuck at Friendly.

[It] looks like it'll just be making people pay for the same (read: lower) quality books that they already have. If they make people pay for various books (whether they're an improvement or not), doesn't that mean they succeeded as a business? From Paizo's standpoint: If people buy their products, ...

Given that it's not backwards compatible at all without severe silliness, do you think Paizo will instead make articles or extra books ($$$) to address the other splatbooks with Pathfinder? They've already fucked up this badly. It is guaranteed that they will come out with a line of splatbooks. Wha...

Not quite; the DC is now 15+(spell level)*2, not 15+(spell level).

From that short list of bullet points (which is a pretty limited preview), there is a small, but notable trend towards powering up defenses relative to attacks in the system. Again, I see two changes to defenses: -Killing attacks will do less stun, especially if you don't have any resistant PD/ED -...

Without seeing the final version of various spells, it's hard to say. But I suspect you're right.

It's not, but 90% of the changes in Pathfinder are cosmetic anyways.

I'm surprised that there are so many melee fighters out there with no access to Haste, but chacun a son gout. I agree that it's not really a nerf, though. Haste is a perfectly reasonable thing for the Wizard to throw down every fight if he was otherwise considering tossing Fireballs. Over a battle,...

From that teaser list, it appears that 6e is going to favor defensive superheroes and should probably be subtitled something like Bulletproof To me it just looks like they (correctly) reduced the ability to knock people out with a lucky killing attack. I guess they mentioned removing Find Weakness,...

Well, I never said that it was better. I'm just making fun of the fact that they didn't really nerf the class, and instead gave it a stealth buff (free haste-package meal), when they were intending to actually nerf the class. So "buff" doesn't mean "better" to you? I'm surprised...

I haven't played Champions in over 15 years, but I'm glad they're cracking down on Stun Yahtzee(tm). And I don't mind the Mutants & Mastermind-style approach of getting rid of figured characteristics.

Except that when there are either no practical ways of getting that luck bonus or plenty of replacements it is identical. I've seen clerics buff with both Divine Favor and Divine Power in 3.5. Maybe that's not possible in your game. Fine; life is a rich tapestry. But still "identical" is ...

The character is inferior when maximally buffed including spells that are not on their list, but better when using only spells on their list. I am unable to see that as a meaningful nerf. -Username17 Most melee fighters (clerics or not) have Boots of Speed on their "list", in my experienc...

This is retarded. They talk about getting rid of Turn Undead and changing it to Channel Energy. Then, in the feats list she has "Turn Undead" as a feat. WTF? I guess the point is that "channeling energy" doesn't make undead run away but "turning undead" does. They made...
