In a world where magic actually works magic is science. But if I understand what you want there are some setting in GURPS that try to do that, Technomancer, for example. If we are talking about internal consistent magic systems I think my favorite is the one in JAGS Wonderland, it is a little hard t...

RC2, just read the book, I will not say 'again', because I doubt you read it even the first time. I love it when people give a completely vague defense as a counterpoint. Yeah, just go reread a 1000+ page novel because there's an explanation in there somewhere. Yeah... um ok.... if you say so. Well...

Not to mention, Sauron couldn't even detect the thing unless someone was wearing it. And it's corruptive influence went down as you went away from Mt.Doom. So I don't really know why they didn't just send Frodo on one of the boats with the elves who were leaving Middle Earth, and then just drop it ...

The fact is that LotR doesn´t make any fucking sense, and the only reason they don´t solve everything day one by having the elven high magicians cut a hole in Mount Doom with their literally Ëarth-shatteric magic and then have the fucking eagles fly over all the bullshit obstacles and solve everyth...

Re: Making Retreats viable

What's a good way to make retreating viable in a tactical battlemap sense, and without making kiting an unbeatable strategy? If they are faster than you, slow them down Web, Grease (magic or not) caltrops, tangle-foot bags, bags of marbles or anything else you can think of, or try to go where they ...

The way I see it is that the guards can handle the PCs because they have the number and the strategy. The PCs can't slap the guards around because there are 4 of PCs and 40+ of the guards, also every average sized city have probably a special team of guard trained and equipped to deal with adventure...

Why just not say that you cast at your character level ? The main problem with multiclassing is not that you lose casting level, is that you lose on higher level slots and spells and that you suffer from a bad case of MAD. I see not particular problem in saying that a wiz10/dru10 cast at 20 level be...

Even better, you can break down a door with your bare hands. Without hardness even attacks that do a point of damage can -eventually- crash down any item.

The point I’m trying to make with the meth lab example is that in the real world, we have the power to always use superior force against any small point of darkness that we detect. Yes, but to bring the example back to the fantasy world, that would, at best, stop the darkness for a while, then what...

Re: Dark Sun returns

Thanks for this. That seems to work much better. I don't know, I don't want to sound too difficult but isn't it a little too deadly? Sounds about right to me -- the average human has a hard time going even a day without water. Three days of no water for someone with an unexceptional constitution an...

The line must mean that the character continues to make checks right away, potentially losing multiple surges until he succeeds. Thanks for this. That seems to work much better. I don't know, I don't want to sound too difficult but isn't it a little too deadly? I mean, and correct me if I'm wrong b...

Rather than give a plain bonus I think wizards should be able to use the arcana skill in way the other classes can't, and of course other classes with other skills. for example a wizard could be able to use Arcana to identify exactly a magic item, while other classes could just be able to say it is ...

A scroll of Mind Blank costs 3,000 gp. This could be an idea to nerf wizards, drop charged items (wands and scrolls, and maybe even potions) or make it harder to get/make them, preferably not for just plain money, I'm not saying to goes back to 2nd edition 'you need the sigh of an oak tree and the ...

hell, some stuff in 2e was crazier than 3e. The only thing that comes to mind is the psionic power Animal Affinity. Stoneskin - it used to be a perfect defense against attacks of arbitrary strength. Rock to Mud - insta-kill without save against anyone who isn't either flying or gigantic. Magic Jar ...

The only reason to have skills is if it is important that a character at a given level be able to have a variable amount of skill in a variable number of abilities while still being level appropriate. This means that if you want skills, three things need to happen: 1] A character with 5 Climb, 5 Ju...

I accidentally deleted my post, so I'm going to make this brief. 1. Hit points are not a resource outside of combat. Aren't they? Healing potions/wands, etc come for free in your campaign? You don't need slots/PP to cast healing spells? 2. Let's pretend that Jill and Chris are playing Resident Evil...

Let's assume, for simplicity sake, that psionic let you do 4 damage for every PP you use, if you meet a monster with , i.e. 80 hp you'll need 20 PP to kill it, can you name a single good reason to make it in 2 10PP attacks if you can do it in only one? Yes. You use a 10 PP attack to help fight the ...

Banning two 9-th level spells isn't even a fucking houserule. Because you don't even fucking need to actually houserule anything if you play a homebrew or even Eberron - you can just say that said spells are unknown/unaccessible and 3-4 creatures that grant wishes do not exist in your cosmology. Wh...
