Yeah, the cliché is that the hero always becomes the new king and makes her own just rules. Which pretty much destroys the idea of a 'chaotic hero' in the above context. Yes, but the cliche also goes that the hero frees the slaves, reduces the VAT, upholds human rights, creates social welfare syste...

Ah, yes. Because there have been countless stories about heroes overthrowing an evil king and causing a blasted mess by doing so. Right, that's a staple of fantasy right there.

But that doesn't work either, because a personal contract only exists in the face of societal regulation. I am hired to dig a trench in exchange for clams. I dig a trench (or don't) and you don't want to give me any clams. Fortunately, we've reached that point in development where no human being, e...

Okay, so what does this 'chaotic good' person do when, after the king is overthrown, people decide that it's cool to start lynching minorities they don't like and/or taking a shit in the town well? What does this 'chaotic good' person do when it turns out that the evil king actually had an elite ar...

Stiff like this made me treat law and chaos more as to how they see the world should resolve its problems. Chaotic people feel that everyone in the world should make their own judgments. Whether its some "survival of the fittest" theory, or "goodness in every man" or "live a...

If you ignore that stuff, it is apparently possible to have a really fun game there, but every time you mention it, someone will laugh at you for playing a game with miniature giant space hamsters. And ironically, these are often the same people who agree that BG's Minsc, with his miniature giant s...

The only slightly useful place for skill challenges mechanic is when there is a need for a skill during combat. The "one guy picking a lock while the others keep enemies at bay" kind of scene. In those kind of scenes I can see gathering a number of successes being dramatic enough to justif...

And besides, am I missing something or do the skill challenges just boil down to "roll a bunch of dice. See if you passed or not". Which is a great change from "roll a single dice. See if you passed or not" exactly... How?

I used to buy cards. Never again will I spend money on a game system only to continually have to buy more stuff. When I play a game it's with someone else's deck or in a format where I can use any card without buying them. Ok, you don't play card games at all. Whatever. And that's fine and Dengar w...

Back in the day, before honor-bound suicide became the formal stylized ritual that everything the Japanese touch eventually becomes, the warrior caste would kill themselves in whatever way they thought best. And there were points for style. The incident of the man who put his sword in his mouth bla...

Adding new viable decktypes is fine and good. Elminating decktypes from being viable at all is bad. So don't play Card Games because that's pretty much what happens in every single one, whether because of evolving meta or rotation or whatever. Yes, I understand that part about Battle Destiny. My po...

Bill, the Dengar thing is exactly the thing I'm talking about with some game logic you learn to accept in time. The answer is simple - you must first have battle destiny to add to it. If you add a battle destiny, you have battle destiny, so you cannot use "May draw one battle destiny if unable ...

I played Magic back when I was in.... grade 7. That's like... 12. It was a reference to classical Samuel Johnson quote. And Bill, I do agree SWCCG is a mess of rules and has a very steep learning curve. However, I played that game for over a decade, so I have a good grasp of the logic behind the ga...

Yu-Gi-Oh is a game for boys; Magic, for men; but he who aspires to be a hero must play SWCCG. No, seriously. The only card game to my knowledge that, despite being out-of-print for almost 8 years is still going strong with new sets created and active tournament community, large player base and suffi...

You can make it setting-consistent to have evil have more power (or gain it quicker) than good, but the system in question did a lousy job of it. The thing is in WFRP you don't advance by levels in the career, you advance by spending XP (everything has the same cost, no matter what you buy) to gain...

But the names would cause my (german speaking) group to treat the adventure as a joke anyway. Or or two such names would be acceptable, but not that many "descriptive names". From what I could see from my limited experience with WFRP modules, they are filled with easter eggs and pop cultu...
