4e's mechanics are simple. You have a bunch of crappy powers. These are nothing compared to 3rd edition spells. Some are at-wills, some once per encounter, and some daily. Most powers do an inconsequential amount of damage and inflict some sort of useless effect such as sliding the target two square...

Oh hell yeah I have no idea how the hell damage is being handled, but the 4e guys will be putting out a lot less if you're using RAW. As a 2e/3e caster, you'll have spells which actually kill people, they at best might stun for a round. Also if you're playing a 3.5 caster with 3.0 haste, don't forge...

What was it like before and what was it like afterwards? (Note: I may check to see if what you're saying is actually accurate.) Pretty sure you couldn't actually get it as a player in the 3.0 FRCS. I could be wrong. You're wrong. Spellfire was printed as a feat in the 3.0 Magic of Faerun, and bolst...

And of course, any noob in magic school can go out and tell you what your alignment is. Hell, you can even buy a magic hat which tells you 100 percent if what you're doing is an evil act. There really isn't much room for gray in the system. Actually, I think its really more gray than anybody is giv...

Remember kids, genocide is A-OK if it's ugly people!
So I was reading through some splatbooks and discovered the following little gem in Complete Champion. Apparently all the followers of the church of Corellon the elf-god gain status from...killing as many orcs and drow as possible, because the drow are supposed to be in hell, but they aren't, so cle...

To change the topic back to mechanics, a friend of mine has decided that Pathfinder is the mechanically superior successor to 3.5. He's citing some sort of reverse Oberoni fallacy (I'll get him to rephrase it later, this is from a discussion a few weeks ago and I may be misrepresenting him) that bec...

Alright. here's mine. At the time, I had been playing with an MC who was one of those old Gygaxian grognards who has no fucking idea how the game works. He had a variety of bizarre bans, such as banning monks for being overpowered (but wizards are A-OK!), banning any character who used a racial stat...

Mister Cavern, Rule Zero, and Bullshit
One of the wonderful things about our beloved hobby of roleplaying games is the fact that we end up entrusting one gamer with control over the rest of the game - telling you what to play, potentially having the power to change rules, and so on. The question is, why? I understand that we need someone...

Designers vs editors
How much of a game's suckage can be ascribed to editors and how much to designers? Because I am wondering if the problem endemic to WotC's wunneful design skillz isn't the crappy editing. Let's see... -According to Ari Marmell, the editors changed the hell out of his shadowcaster, turning it complet...

I think the classplosion didn't happen for a couple reasons: 1. The designers thought classes were way more flexible than they really are/people don't care about character customization. After all, there are usually few choices in MMOs. 2. The 4rries decided to refluff everything, rather than get ne...
