Re: What's to stop you from declaring yourself as being evil

Not being an expert in continuity external to the actual movies, if you say he smuggled drugs and weapons, okay. I'd argue that this is probably still just plain neutral. In fact, depending on the exact circumstances, you could make a case for it being good .[br][br]Sounds unlikely? What if he's run...

Re: What's to stop you from declaring yourself as being evil

I'm with Desdan here. Paladins who commit an evil act don't suddenly turn evil until they atone -- they lose their paladinhood until they atone, but they don't immediately turn evil.[br][br]And let's not forget that the government Han Solo is ripping off by not paying his import/export duties is in ...

Re: Duskblade vs traditional Gish discussion

In White Box, elves could choose whether they wanted to count as a fighter or a wizard for any particular adventure; in BECMI, "elf" was the fighter/mage class.[br][br]I'm not sure whether the idea is really new at all. Elric of Melnibone, Harold Shea, and Gandalf are all "classic fan...

Re: Duskblade vs traditional Gish discussion

Throwing flashy damage around has been a part of D&D for so long, that I think it's the main draw for players when considering arcane classes. [br][br]Kind of ironic, what with flashy damage having been royally nerfed in 3.X. I agree that it's what hooks a lot of players onto the class, though....

As opposed to picking up a mace, shield, full plate armor and then strictly being awesome the whole day? I don't really understand your argument. [br][br]I'm ... not sure I understand what you're getting at, either. That clerics are awesome? Yes, they are. That they're more awesome than multiclass ...

Re: Duskblade vs traditional Gish discussion

There's another reason people like "Gish" (a term I actively loathe, by the way): people are fundamentally lazy.[br][br]Setting up your spell rack appropriately and keeping track of what's running for how long and how your stats change under which spells and on and on and on is a big pain ...

Re: PHB II: The Review

Did anyone notice that Master's Touch was completely changed so that you don't cast it ever again? [br][br]Maybe this was their small way of making it up to the Fighter for all the awesome fighting spells they printed in the same book. If so, it was a flaming failure, but big shock there. Re: Kicking Dungeons and Dragon Old School

The main problem with being an elven anything in 1st edition was that if you died, you weren't coming back, because Raise Dead didn't work on elves.[br][br]The other problem was that you needed very high stats if you were playing by strict rules; you were limited to a 5th/9th fighter/magic-user unle...

Re: Duskblade vs traditional Gish discussion

Note that unless your DM has already been exposed to the idea, you are likely to encounter significant resistance to the idea that being an Outsider grants you weapon proficiencies. I'm not saying that it's wrong, I'm just saying you should be prepared for your DM to kick up a fuss.[br][br]The Milit...

Re: Kicking Dungeons and Dragon Old School

Honestly I always considered the thief to be the worst class in 1E/2E. [br][br]Not in my experience, but you had to be careful. Toe-to-toe melee would get you killed right quick, but skirmish tactics would work out to your advantage. The best part of being a thief, however, was just that you got ab...

Re: Kicking Dungeons and Dragon Old School

About the best classes.[br][br]PWW is basically right in that fighters were much better at low level. But wizards ramped up really fast, and if you lived to 3rd level, you were pretty much assured of being at least as kickass as anybody who happened to be swinging a sword. Essentially, it was a shor...

Re: Kicking Dungeons and Dragon Old School

The "standard" game in early 1st edition (and pre-1st edition) essentially revolved around a dungeon. And not even a series of dungeons -- one big dungeon. You'd have a town somewhere nearby that the PCs could use as a base, and occasionally this town would have some minor subplots relatin...

Re: Mathematically Proving That Fighters Suck

The most likely counterexample involves Resist Energy. Since I don't actually own any WotC 3.5 adventures, though, I couldn't say whether an encounter involving someone with Resist Energy versus multiple different energy types has been published.

Re: Mathematically Proving That Fighters Suck

You need a Wisdom of at least 15 to cast a 5th level spell via Arcane Disciple.

Also, you can only attract a cohort two levels or more below your current level, so only a level 10 Wizard there.

Jaxom was an Aristocrat, Lessa was a multiclass Aristocrat/Rogue, F'lar and F'nor and the rest of them were Rangers, and Menolly was an Expert. And I hate myself for remembering enough of the names and the characters to make this post.

Re: PHB II: The Review

The Duskblade! Apparently all the good names for fighter/mage classes have already been sucked up by terrible prestige classes, so they had to reach pretty far down in the barrel for this one. Conceptually, you're a warrior/wizard -- that's it. Like every other damned thing in D&D that's any goo...

Re: What's to stop you from declaring yourself as being evil

What Chan is describing is what I think of as Neutral Evil or perhaps Chaotic Evil: Neutral Evil is evil for the sake of evil, and Chaotic Evil is unpredictable, irrational, and psychotic evil. The notion of a "Chaotic Evil society" is kind of a funny one, and yet to the Drow, it's no joke...

Re: What's to stop you from declaring yourself as being evil

The only real reason it doesn't work is the same reason many other things in D&D don't work: the GM doesn't let you.[br][br]Most GMs don't actually care whether what you do is antisocial or kleptomaniac or psychotically violent, and, as an "adventurer", most of what you do probably is....
