The third party supplement Airships has an astonishing amount of information about them. Even if you want more, it's very easy to build on what they present, and they do an excellent job of integrating airships into the current rules.

So the solution to casters is 24/7 hounding by outsiders? I think that was already addressed by it seeming forced and dickish. That seems like a really specific solution to the problem. Why outsiders, and why only the casters? That was your exact solution . It's not like he's putting words in your ...

There's a few really weird high level spells like binding and statue which are basically never used.

Wow, these are a lot of really good ideas. Thanks especially to Vebyast for that link to the Backus-Naur Form. That could be really useful. While it will pretty much have to be a programming language built from scratch, it also needs to be incredibly simple and easy to understand. I don't want the e...

I think that might be the best idea. I don't want to just have it be a bunch of premade spells since that defeats the whole idea. But having specific, defined, scalable effects that you can link together with certain words could definitely work. As Frank said, you don't want three different words th...

Well, if those were the only words they knew (and assuming they get basic grammar), then I imagine the best they could do would be to write burn in circle , since they don't have the vocabulary to specify kobolds. Of course, it would make more sense to have one rune for 'race', and specify what race...

Sure. The basic idea is that you could cause almost any kind of magical effect. Like if you wanted to imitate some magic stuff that already exists, you could have stuff like: SHINE WHEN HELD that would be put on a rod so that when you held it it would light up like a torch. OPEN GATE TO HELL might i...

Like I said, I like the second idea better IN THEORY, but as you described, I'm not sure it's workable in a pen and paper game. I have a feeling it would just lead to option paralysis for anyone. And of course there would be a lot of paperwork to keep track of what did what. Lots of tables and chart...

Programmable Magic: How realistic is it?

I've always been fascinated by alternative magic systems, and it seems to me that the most fluid and flexible system possible would basically be to write down a magical 'program' of plain language terms, pretty much just saying what you want to happen, and then it happens. So my question is, how pos...

So what I was thinking when I read the OP was that it's really interesting to look at 'actions' on a totally different scale than you usually find in DnD, while still having access to your old abilities. Like from the other thread about the three tiers or whatever, let's go with Zinegata's original ...

Simplicity definitely counts for a lot, and having a given number on the Winds of Fate roll refer to a particular tactic would definitely speed things up when planning out tactics for the entire party. My only concern is when parties get screwed by the RNG and get options that aren't really useful f...

I get and understand the idea behind the Winds of Fate. To keep things interesting and make sure that people aren't always using the same bland attacks over and over. I can get behind that as a viable goal. But I can't get behind having whatever number comes up on the roll determining what have to b...

Yeah, the ingredients are staying. One of the reasons I wanted to make this is was so that there'd be an enormous list of ingredients that you could mix together in fun and weird ways. That's what an alchemist needs to be able to do. Some of the guesses are pretty good, some are totally off. Krypton...

Novice (level 3) ingredients are up. I'm glad people like the idea. I figured that if you can accept most of the stuff in D&D, there should be no problem with assuming that a skilled alchemist can find pretty much anything anywhere in an hour's time. @God_of_Awesome: I've got notes on what most ...

[Base Class] Apothecary

The Apothecary “A dash of parsley, a hint of oregano, and voilà! A fusion bomb!” Apothecaries mix stuff up. They can fit into pretty much any setting, since most have people that mix drinks. Even if you don’t have alchemists in your world, you probably have bartenders. Playing an Apothecary : As an...
