If it's my first time with a system, or I can't decide, I'll generally go with a ranged character type. Gunner, Archer, w/e. If I know the system well enough I'll choose a type with a lot of skills. I tend to follow into a generalist while the rest of the party gets specialized into their ways. If I...

I think it's funny how this started off as: How 2 Mak Bettar RPGz And went to: wot iz balance? All uther balancez r dum. No balance among playarz. wot iz balance really? Adventurez don't count, there's no game in them. Adventure != campaign && campaign == module. Really, Shadazar. I think th...

Right again, which is why i say a main focus on balance, is that of balanced play. if you cannot make it balanced for all playstyles, then you need to offer plenty of examples of the suspected playstyle that you are trying to have the game replicate. Are you serious? I didn't take the time to find ...

I'll look more into maptools and see where that takes me.

Oh, on a side note... can you put math into character sheets for Maptools? Simple expression type stuff. Nothing too complex.

Re: How to obtain balance in RPG design.

I just think "balance" of the player classes against each other is pretty dumb, since they are not intended to be opposing each other, but working together instead. So trying to prevent something from being broken, does not require weighing it against another player ability, unless it is ...

I checked out Open RPG, It's easier to install than I remember and pretty familiar to me despite the changes. Pretty customizable for what I'm looking for and making new sheets should be simple. It doesn't come with much after installation so I would need to get/make everything. Looked at kLoOge whi...

@Surgo Yea the UI is pretty annoying at times. In the last version I used, the "grid" and "snap to grid" features kept falling out of sync if you zoomed in and out of the map. I don't think I hated it as much as you, but it did have it's issues and who knows, maybe they have gott...

I found this site ( http://www.rpgvirtualtabletop.com/vts.html ) which has links to a lot of other programs. Some don't support more than five players, others don't support custom character sheets, many require an activation fee in order to let others join from the internet, and overall I'm not real...

Opinions about Open RPG

I was looking at free, virtual, table-top gaming software and came across Open RPG. I remember using it a long time ago so I'm sure it's changed quite a bit. I was going to use it for some strategy gaming so naturally there will be lots of unit pieces on the board. http://www.rpgobjects.com/index.ph...

There's a difference between Bullshit and Creativity. I like to see creativity and if I let something slide, I'm not going to punish the players for it. As the DM I have the power to stop bullshit and say: "Wait what? You're doing that? [Discuss] Nope, sorry. You can't do this, but you can do t...

I have noticed a lot of things stay constant with my settings. They're either modern, steam punk, or some variant. There's also how I create new settings which never really changes. I'm always starting with maps. Its when the landmasses are taking form that geopolitical ideas come in; Which nation h...
