His opinion sounds incorrect, but the more relevant take-home is that it sounds like he wasn't using the degree of nuance you would appreciate. It seems that you surmised his intent clearly enough. With no stakes, intent is a better yardstick than strict adherence to what was actually said. Ultimate...

Eh. I still think 4e is decent, but I think you have to approach it more like it was Heroquest/Warhammer Quest rather than a full RPG.

Hell, if they made any sort of random dungeon generator and a written mob AI you'd HAVE WQ.

In my Street Fighter games I always handed out the appropriate XP amounts, and then an additional sum to be used solely on non-combat abilities. In any similar game (its oWoD) with skill splits you can encourage all players to have something worth doing by taking away the opportunity cost of doing a...

Where Morrowind stinks though, is if you don't like to randomly wander around and explore. The world is absolutely massive and the plot hooks are scattered around liberally. First thing you do is hack up a toggle that jacks your Running and Swimming to 200+ and keeps you from falling (otherwise you...

How the fuck did you pull that off? The GM offered one to take some set amount of XP... I can't exactly remember how much. It was enough for a quasi-talented character, but you could take it in magic items instead and be lower level. I kept the list because it was ridiculous. The items were pretty ...

I find my elaborate rationalizations justifying my minmax wankery to be much more satisfying than simple coincidence conspiring to make my choices thematically satisfying.

My favorite is the templated Anthropomorphic Whale that escaped from Baphomet's breeding pits. :D

The magic items have completely arbitrary GP values, totally divorced from what the item actually does. Item A, better in all ways than Item B, could have a GP value of 1/3 Item B's. For an online game on RPOL I dumpster-dove through the Encyclopedia Magicas (its a long commute) and came up with eno...

My new love for Metal

Watching Metalocalypse reignited the part of me that loves screamo bands and so I compiled a short list of bands I really liked for the sole purpose of putting them on a list somewhere. This is that list. MASTODON Any band with a concept album based on Moby Dick is awesome. The new album Crack the S...

I'd say "restoring the item to its previous state" covers restoring its powers. The bigger grey area is Roy's point about Metalline's interaction with Aurorum and what takes precedence when its destroyed. I would personally argue that the Metalline magic goes when its broken, as do all its...

I still haven't seen the Monk playtest, but I was really hoping for a successful role filling a niche...

Namely, doing a 4e Wizard's job, but worse: AoE melee attacks designed to blast minions and single-target control powers.

God knows what it is but it isn't a Tempest so I don't care. :p

I think part of the problem is that a well-designed RPG probably doesn't need a raft of supplements to "work".

As an industry, RPGs are not the sort of revenue stream that encourage good design.

If the player thinks the character should destroy it because IT'S EVIL and that seems appropriate, then they should do it and the GM should feed them a few more perks to make up for the GP loss. If the character sells the Unholy sword for cash and the GM is okay with it, let them keep the cash and h...
