Another idea: large-scale or permanent magic (enchanting, etc) either causes problems for things around it or has problems if there's stuff around it. An example of the first case: when enchanting magic items, every ten tons of dirt within a hundred feet makes the enchanting take 5% longer. An examp...

The point about celestial bodies is well made. You could probably get where you need to go even without the habitable part; all you need are nerves of steel and a really, really good concentration bonus. However, three problems: 1) You have to know where you're going. You could probably get around t...

A logical reason for wizard towers

A Logical Reason for Wizard Towers We all know what a wizard tower is, and we all know that we want our wizards to have them. As things stand, however, there is absolutely no reason for anybody to build stuff aboveground, thanks to the Tome rules about effects with range longer-than-long. However, ...

Semantics questions: On the psi-like abilities granted at first and eighth levels, you might want to make it more clear that the lurk gains several separate psilike abilities that each cost one point to activate, rather than a single aggregate psilike that manifests all of those abilities for one po...

Nice thread rez. Might as well join in myself. I'm pretty terrible at real acting. I can greatly amplify any one or two aspects of my own personality, but I can't significantly reduce or remove anything. Most of my characters end up being what I myself would like to be if I could get away with it. S...

The well-thought out consequences of everything. Sahuagin rule the world, for example. The entire idea of the wish economy. All the little details that require taking what's given and extending it to its logical conclusion. Those parts are awesome.

A fun related idea, which is easier to pull off: invert the pattern. Convince the party that one of the major churches is this, despite it being completely contrary to all evidence (and, in fact, contrary to reality). The more extreme the party's reaction the better. For example, I once had a party ...

I've put together a few quick not-quite-optimized characters that made very, very good use of a $Weapon of Many Colors. The most successful was a rapid-throwing build that used a Throwing Telekinetic Many Colors greatsword. That +30 damage really stacks up you're doing it twenty or thirty times per ...

In cases where one player forces another player to take an impossible action, who wins? For example, given a card that causes the player to your right to draw a card, and an empty deck, who wins? As a side question, are the victory conditions only running out of dice or cards, or does any impossible...

I was playing Mario Galaxy 2 this afternoon. Some of the levels are pretty crazy, things "every time you jump, half the level vanishes and the other half reappears". More than once, after getting the star, I looked back at the level and thought "That was bloody amazing."

Also, cool numbers.

I'm just throwing in my two cents here, but if (when?) I buy a precious stone for jewelery, I'm almost certainly going to get one that's explicitly man-made. Can someone name me some cRPGs where the mages outperform the fighters at their own game when they're not supposed to? Preferably single-player. And while we're on the subject, I heard that such a build existed for Dragon Age: Origins. Plz elaborate! There's a PrC called the "Arcane Warrior&qu...

Maybe, I was thinking something like this. Classes: Warrior, Thief, Mage Each class has five sets categories of ability sets (Green, Red, White, Blue, Black) and there are spheres within those mana colors. Every level regardless of class, you get so much mana to spend, choosing from any of the five...

As another alternative to what Calibron suggested for your mana system, you could use it as something you spend during character creation/leveling up. Gathering specific colors of mana allow you to advance up that color's list of powers sort of like advancing a sphere (where each color was a sphere...

I found linear algebra to be singularly useless. I managed to pass, but I have no idea what to do with it. It depends on what you do. A lot of the robotics stuff that I do depends on some very heavy-duty linear algebra, but I can easily see an English major never touching a matrix in their life. If...

It's meant to work in heavy armor, although maybe it should require a shield. I'll fix that as soon as I'm sure about the shield part one way or another. I think replacing the light armor requirement with wielding a shield is a great idea. Agreed. The Holy Shield ability already pretty much require...

Try treating everyone like they actually matter. While I've found a few truly worthless people, they are incredibly rare.
