I think one of the older DM guides (maybe 3.0) said that XP was something you gained for completing dangerous tasks. No danger, no XP. Paying for a roll with XP would be the equivalent of temporarily reducing the difficulty setting of a video game so you could get past a difficult or uninteresting p...

I think that critting is supposed to be rare, so I guess that either I wouldn't allow a bought roll to be a crit, or I would have the player pay extra for it to be a crit. Even so, few of our encounters can be won simply through critting a few times. In the case the players get into a random fight t...

Betting XP as a way to offset/replace randomness
Perhaps I've been studying game theory (as in the the branch of mathematics) too much but I got the idea have a task resolution mechanic based on betting. I see two alternatives, one just a modification to the standard d20 mechanic, one less conventional. 1) Allow players to buy dice rolls with XPs....

Reminds me a bit of the cards you could play in Shatterzone from West End Games. I never actually tried that game, but it seemed like an interesting concept. You were dealt cards that could be played both to gain mechanic edges (bonuses to rolls, automatically get initiative in a combat round etc) b...

@hogarth Thanks for the tip! From the review of MnM, it seem it has done some interesting things that I'll see if I can use. Damage saves instead of hit points for instance is something I see would greatly reduce book keeping around the table for large fights. @Murtak Ok, I understand your point abo...

Level with me here, why do we need em? (levels that is)
Having recently bought Shadowrun 4, found that I really liked the level and class less system. I have now been considering what it would take to combine the core DnD 3.5E task resolution mechanic with a class and level-less advancement scheme. In short, abilities scores, BAB, saves etc would be boug...

Any purchases of the material available, except directly from the publisher, would not lead to money going to the publisher. This is because material in stores is generally already paid for, while materials at distributers and some bookstores have return clauses. So buying or not buying doesn't hur...

I like Shadowrun a lot. So much that I wrote for it. But it doesn't have an acceptable melee combat minigame. That's fine for a game about shooting people in the face for money, but again it's not a good start for a Fantasy game. -Username17 After discovering that SR4 was only $15 as PDF, I went ah...

I know little about freelance writing, but I have some experience in the software industry where the rules of productivity seem to be the same. Better to get 5 excellent engineers than 20 average ones. You reduce collaboration overhead, 5 excellent ideas typically solves much harder problems than th...

Seems going back to WotC3.5 is the option most likely to happen for me, though the AE suggestion piqued my interest. I think one of my main gripes about 3.5 is that I've played it extensively and felt that I was maybe ready for something else. 4E wasn't the answer. Anyhow, my thanks to the posters w...

What system to replace DnD 4E with for my Eberron campaign?
In short, I run an Eberron game that I like but I just can't make the DnD 4E system work. I get bogged down in book keeping during encounters and generally I find that the system encompasses too many books for me to afford. Having read a number of threads on this forum, I feel that my views are fair...
