Ah, dammit.
Bleach is out early. Huzzah.
Aizen gets another time of going, "I'm so badass, ur all n00bs"

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Gee, people were saying the same thing about Dragonball. Goku and friends were just ridiculously outmatched by Frieza, even after Goku abuses his new ridiculous powerup to the limit (Kaioken x TWENTY) and what does Goku manage to do? Pull a powerup out of his ass that ROFLstomps Frieza.
People who say that Ichigo has no chance have obviously never read a fighting shounen before. There are always more powerups, even in a realistic setting.

You gotta admit Aizen really pulled a nice dickmove.
Had he replaced himelf with Ichigo instead, it would have been lol.
But Hinamori taking a blade again is nice.

So, whitewashing done in the casting of Avatar.
WTF were you thinking, M. Night?
Were you being racist or were you making a decision to appeal to the racism of your audience? Either way, you're a piece of shit.

Is there any particular reason why the characters would have to be Asian? If not, caring about it is a hell of a lot more racist than anything the producer did.Lago PARANOIA wrote:So, whitewashing done in the casting of Avatar.

I'd say...Mainly to maintain some of the feel and charm of the show.Neeeek wrote:Is there any particular reason why the characters would have to be Asian? That's the big loss when converting something to a movie--the extras and niceties are the first to get hacked off.
I wouldn't read a novelization of a Harry Potter movie. It hacks away the parts of the writing that're actually decent and readable. Likewise, the Dresden Files TV series somehow failed to remember that some comedy and everyday life is good.
Anyway, I don't expect the Airbender movie to be really great...

If the producer is truly colorblind, then why did they make the change in the first place? Why not leave it the same as it is?Neeek wrote: Is there any particular reason why the characters would have to be Asian? If not, caring about it is a hell of a lot more racist than anything the producer did.
When you adapt something for the screen, you have to have a reason for any changes you make, even if it's something as simple as 'that was awesome but there's just not enough time to show up'.
So when something as easily obvious and doable as 'make the characters' appearances match what was on the show' doesn't get done, it raises the question of WHY they didn't do this.

Wait - Fire = Japanese, Air = buddhist monks, Water = Inuit, Earth = uh. Hm. Japanese too, at least with the face-painting warriors. Dunno what you'd call Ma Tsing Tse though it's probably trying to be Chinese, based on the name.
There wasn't any real specifically Chinese culture in Avatar that I saw. No Celestial Bureaucracy or governors or that kind of thing.

The person making the film is the man responsible for The Happening. You'll be lucky if it's only a whitewash and not a complete and total cinematic disaster.Gelare wrote:Yeah, Earth is Chinese. And Orion hit that nail on the head, part of what makes that show so damn cool is the interaction of the various cultures, and whitewashing everything is a sacrilege. Like the rest of that movie probably will be.

I've only seen one movie by this director--Lady in the Water.FrankTrollman wrote:Those aren't ideas. Those are twists.

I'd say he's running out of good twists.

It can't be worse than Lady in the Water, where he was Writer, Director, and Actor.Crissa wrote:I was wondering why M Night. is credited for Direction and Writing.
There's hundreds of good writers out there looking for work and we have to watch this Writer-Director shit?

A jaded fourth-wall-breaking movie critic is the only person who dies, and M. Night plays the actual hidden focus of the movie--a guy who will be regarded as a political martyr by future people, but whose thoughts on politics will make the world a better place by inspiring a future President.
The ego of the man,..

Living close to LA the last two years, I can tell you that there have been open casting calls for Asian manchildren the whole time that have been so intense that a semi-recluse like me has heard about it.Lago PARANOIA wrote:So, whitewashing done in the casting of Avatar.

I think that Hollywood's racial biases for not casting Asians (with Asian men of any age being almost non-existent) is basically biting them in the ass when they actually need Asian kids for a wildly lucrative franchise. I think they basically can't find anyone to play the role.
So less M. Night's racism, and more systematic Hollywood racism. I'm not sure if that's any better.
Eh, they all probably just didn't make it to the auditions on account of crashing their cars.
Sorry, I just... it was too good to pass up. Honestly I'm really disappointed that the movie has almost no hope of even approaching the greatness of the television series.
Also my father and many of his friends did a bunch of street-racing in their youth. Not sure whether that adds to the stereotype or not. They're certainly competent drivers, but I guess that's not necessarily the same thing as good.

The casting call for the four main characters called for actors who were 'Caucasian, or any other race.' That's a particularly unsubtle code.K wrote:I think that Hollywood's racial biases for not casting Asians (with Asian men of any age being almost non-existent) is basically biting them in the ass when they actually need Asian kids for a wildly lucrative franchise. Is it just me, or did Zeus want to provoke war on purpose in The Lightning Thief by allowing his weapon to be stolen by a powerless demigod?

You don't know your greek mythology much, do you?
The greek gods weren't all-powerful. They weren't even all-aware. Sure, if they're paying attention they can do a lot, but they can be caught unawares.
I don't know how much the movie went into it, but the books do sort of imply that Kronos was egging his sons on--subtly, but still doing it.
