Lullabies for a rock-n-roller's daughter.

Post by Cynic »

So my daughter asked for Pink Floyd as her lullaby music. We don't normally play music for her when she sleeps but I decided to indulge her a bit.

I was trying to get a quick playlist of smooth, easy-playing songs.

The list is as follows
Us & them
See Emily Play
Goodbye Blue Sky
Hey You (this might not be the best easy-listening sort-of song)
Wish you were here.
Shine on you crazy diamond.

--

This is my quick to listen lullaby Pink Floyd list. Anyone have any suggestions on easy-listening low-key music for bedtime that isn't the usual lullaby.

~

BTW: I couldn't have a cooler 4-year-old. :D

My parents used to play loud rock music when I was a kid. Makes for a deep sleeper.

As far as Pink Floyd, Heaven and Hell is pretty chill, as is On the Turning Away.

Most of DSotM is really low key: Breath the Air, The Great Gig in the Sky,

High Hopes might qualify, as might Learning to Fly, Pigs on the Wing, Welcome to the Machine, Sea Shell and Soft Stone, Julia Dream, Lost Boys Calling, There's No Way Out of Here, Chain of Life.

Comfortably Numb is a great low-key song, but also probably the most depressing song ever. Which brings me to my question: Why are you subjecting your child to what is quite possibly the most depressing band ever for bedtime?

Catharz: When my wife or I listen to music, she automatically listens in most of the time. Pink Floyd is my wife's favorite band. Therefore, it somehow became my daughter's favorite. Most of the lyrics are beyond my kid but she likes the tune and the dissonance. Now, if only she would listen to Led Zeppelin.

My son used to sleep to normal radio music, but switched over to classical at some point - I still have no idea how. He likes all sorts of music, but some of the rock he enjoys listening/chilling to are Evanescence, VAST, Muse, and Paramore. And Depeche Mode - do they count as rock?

I give my son Johnny Cash songs, and there's http://rockabyebabymusic.com/ ... which plays all sorts of covers of songs but on xylaphone and other instruments to make them sound like a lullaby.

They might be Giants released 2 childrens albums No! and Here comes the ABCs which my friend which children refers as being childrens music which won't drive you batshit insane.

Queensryche's Silent Lucidity would probably be a good song too. Most Neil Yuong would work too. Paul Simon was one of my favorites as a child too. A lot of Peter Gabriel or Crowded House would be relaxing yet still good. Some of the softer Midnight Oil too.

Infect your children with good music at a young age and you too can guarantee them years of ostracization and pain as they fail to be able to find any cultural connection with their sheepish peers who listen to shitty pop music that offends your children's well ingrained musical sensibilities. :D

Kids always seem to end up liking things that you don't get, though. My brother got really into rap even though no one else in the family listened to it at all. My son likes a lot of autotune stuff - from Kanye to Ke$ha - even though it's rare on my playlists (and then there's that video I posted recently that is so not something I listen to normally).

And then, of course, there's the dreaded repeat. I have heard the Basshunter remix of Ievan Polka so many times that it makes my ears bleed. Fortunately, I just found a video on the history of Rome that my son seems to enjoy just as much. I now understand why my mom took me music shopping when I was a kid - she was sick of me listening to the same record over and over and over and over...

:D

Hey, "Meddle" is a great album for sleepytime once you get past "One of these Days".

My daughter (just turned 2) likes "Kid A" at sleepytime.

Are you aware of the

Rock-a-Bye Baby series?
"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

The Rock-a-bye Baby series is hit and miss. Some of them are just plain annoying, and just there for the novelty. There are surprisingly good ones, though- the Green Day one is pretty soothing.

Shooting Star by Bad Company is a favorite of mine and it's a pretty chill tune.

What else is on my playlist...

Life's Been Good To Me So Far by The Eagles.
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

--The horror of Mario

Zak S, Zak Smith, Dndwithpornstars, Zak Sabbath. He is a terrible person and a hack at writing and art. His cultural contributions are less than Justin Bieber's, and he's a shitmuffin. Go go gadget Googlebomb!

Man I love that song, but I don't know why every remix of it focuses on the improv/gibberish part. The rest of the song is so much better.

Neil Young's 'Old Man' and 'Helpless' might fit the bill, too.

EDIT : Plus, Crosby, Still, Nash & Young 'Suite Judy Blue Eyes' and 'Our House'.

Oh, now that you mention CSNY, Fareed Haque's "Deja Vu" album from the Blue Note Covers Series is a great one.

Not sure if this fits what you want, but here goes:
Easy All-Stars - Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds (feat. Frankie Paul)
Easy All-Stars - Karma Police (feat. Citizen Cope)

Reggae style covers of the two songs. Pretty chill.

There's also a couple of Led Zeppelin songs that are quite easy to listen to for a kid that age, especially on the IV / ZOSO album. Going to California, for example.

also Jethro Tull is nice, Stand Up and the second part of Aqualung contain songs that are not too heavy.
