Crazy Cloud's master has sent him on a journey engage in verbal combat with renowned hermit Deathless Wao, and while there record as many of the hermit's writings (read: graffiti) as possible. Rumors of the hermit point to a location in the River Kingdoms, and if the search continues, it will be in the best interest of the monastic community that the hermit's city does not fall to anarchy.
[Note: It is highly likely that Deathless Wao either does not exist, or is long dead, and the whole mission is simply a convoluted exercise in humility. Crazy cloud suspects this, and that is why he is taking his damn sweet time in getting there. He also enjoys the company of adventurers (and prostitutes.)]

In terms of reasons to head there, that kind of local political instability seems like a good way for adventurers to find a job. That job could be taking out some nagas, or helping one side or another shore up their power base. And it's a good time for the original group to be looking for work, since they've got enough money that they can afford to turn down bad offers.
Now, this could easily lead to stealing the treasury or taking over the kingdom, once they see what the situation is like in person, but I don't think either of those would be their reason for showing up in the first place.

They should apply for honorary Aztec status--my ancestors had titles for Tezcatlipoca that translate out to "We are his slaves" and "The enemy of both sides." Some cultures are just kinda gloomy, I guess.
Anyway, I vote for option 1 given that it seems to be the most flexible--if we play our cards right we might still be able to bail out and snatch power ourselves or raid the treasury & gtfo if it turns out the faction we're working with is a bunch of untrustworthy dinguses. My recommendation is that we leverage Koumei's character as an excuse to get together on this one. Say she signed on with some group as sort of a recruiter-and then say she shmoozed people into signing on. God knows it'd be easy in the case of my characters--Valdym craves the validation of being wanted for something and Nesha is determined to never go hungry again. Sola would have them chugging the kool-aid even before she got a chance to throw her big stupid pile of charm at them. Meanwhile, the monk-but-with-aclass-that-doesn't-suck would probably sniff out all that naked ambition from a mile away but still find it hilarious enough to be intrigued. I dunno what Reve wants other than to discover stuff, but Yellow mercenary is mercenary so that shouldn't be too big of a problem as long as the checks keep getting cashed.
Anyway, speaking of Valdym and Nesha, I redid their sheets over on mythweavers and plopped 6k worth of gear and mad money on them. I didn't factor in any potential wealth for Nesha at all, so even if I flubbed somewhere on the total costs I should still have slightly low balled it. I also rejiggered their spell selection and skill ranks a bit, corrected some mistakes and in Nesha's case I swapped out Fortune for the Cauldron hex since I noticed that the FAQ clarified that Cauldron is intended to let you get to brewing a bit ahead of schedule. Not that anyone cares--practically everyone in the party can use some pretty boss spell trigger items anyway and Valdym by definition could get a wand of literally anything she can do.

That seems pretty reasonable to me. Reve and Felf can be fairly mercenary themselves, so they'd be perfectly willing to check out an opportunity that sounds lucrative, even if it doesn't specifically involve dungeon delving for ancient knowledge and relics.Whipstitch wrote: Anyway, I vote for option 1 given that it seems to be the most flexible--if we play our cards right we might still be able to bail out and snatch power ourselves or raid the treasury & gtfo if it turns out the faction we're working with is a bunch of untrustworthy dinguses. So, the PCs are all traveling through the River Kingdoms for various non-time-critical tasks. They hear about the unrest in Artume, determine it's probably not gonna be fun boating through evil naga infested river, but then hear a rumor that the former queen is alive somewhere in Artume and plotting a violent coup. This presents possibilities, and they join together to form a larger party so they'll be be able to have a decent chance of fighting a naga or a couple squads of town guards and winning.
Felf, Reve, and Yellow see a chance to more than make up from the money they spent discouraging pursuit by assassins as they left Brevoy.
Kalar sees that people are suffering greatly, and his talents could mitigate or stop that.
Valdym and Nesha see a situation where a state that already welcomed adventurers is now desperately in need of them. Not only is this a chance to paid, it's an opportunity to get a foot in the door as local heroes, when the situation is too dire for people to complain about their "spooky" appearance and magic. So long as they seem better than Regent Waike, they could get away with a lot.
Sola Tarihr sees a chance to stop suffering, stab an asshole noble in the face, and maybe grab a title and/or real political power.
Currently the plan is to make inquiries in Artume, figure out who the local factions are, and then ally with one or more as they make a bid to secure power. Maybe the PCs will try to form their own faction and take over themselves at some point, maybe they'll stick with whoever seems like they can make Artume into a friendly sanctuary state they can retreat to when they want stability and/or give them phat lewts.
Sound good?

I added pictures to the myth-weavers sheets, which resulted in Nesha getting a hair color change and totally inconsequential description tweak because I continually underestimate the deep commitment fantasy artists have to red hair. And fetish wear and basically having great big boobs everywhere. Underestimated that again too. I am a slow, slow learner. I'm reasonably happy with what I found though, for once, even if it is less "normal" than I was originally going for.
Other thing I learned today: in a break from the "Fuck if I know" stance taken by 3.x, tieflings apparently have an age chart which insists that Valdym should be somewhere around friggin' 70, something I promptly ignored because starting "old" is a big chunk of why I just didn't roll an elf in the first place for this character concept.

Map of the River Kingdoms, with Artume circled in blue:
Note that we're pretty far off from Black Marquis territory, so river piracy is not gonna be a huge problem. Bandit attack is a thing, but it's more common on land and focused on "outsiders".
When the game starts, the party has taken passage to Artume on the Streamstinger, a Gralton barge loaded with food (including a substantial amount of Sevenarches grain) and a few other trade goods. The captain thinks that he'll be able to sell food in order to offset the lost production of pillaged Artume farms, then take a load of refugees back to Gralton to add to the pool of workers and soldiers building up an army opposed to Galt.
Exams are coming up and I need to study, so there won't be an IC thread until Wednesday or Thursday.

That's fine, I'll be recovering from the HPLFF and maybe a new job Monday, so Wed/Thur works great.
