So what you're saying, Frank, is that Promethean: The Created is a book made from dismembered chapters of other nWoD books sown back together and brought to the shelf by the greed of White Wolf's marketing department?

To be honest, I like the Ulgan most of all. I mean yes, their writeup is pretty incoherent. They are based in Tengrism, descended from Bai-Ülgen (which they call "Ulgan", because White Wolf). And they are shamans who are needed to deal with spirits and shit. So unlike all these other assholes, they actually have a reason to be:

Unhappy with their life.
Outcast from society.
Have to pass on the lineage.

Because they are motherfucking shamans who have an important job to do, and that's actually how it works.

Now, this being White Wolf, they can't help but shit all over that. For starters, the spirit handling duties of the Ulgan are really only mentioned in the Ulgan description and not anywhere else, so apparently that shit isn't important. The spirits really will get by just fine without them. For another thing, for no god damn reason at all, there's a whole rant about how maybe these guys are descended from Orpheus, the Greek lyricist? This doesn't make any sense, and is probably in there because at some point in design one of the Promethean types was going to be Greek, and rather than just throw that shit out when they settled on five non-Greek traditions, they just folded that text into whichever lineage writeup was shortest at the time. Promethean has a lot of fossils from abandoned design concepts sitting around in various parts of it.

Speaking of abandoned Greekness, it's actually really fucking weird that the Prometheans as a whole have adopted an extremely Greek magic system, considering that absolutely none of them are Greek. Osirians and Tammuz managed to completely successfully animate corpses with entirely functional magic for like a thousand years before the Hellenistic tribes moved into modern day Greece. So why the shitfuck do they not have some sort of Egyptian or Babylonian tirade for how their shit works? Why is this book so bullshit?

But back to the Ulgan, their stuff really doesn't play nice with the rest of White Wolfiness. They have ectoplasm, and deal with spirits, but they don't really seem to be the same ectoplasm or the same spirits as other characters from other splats have to deal with.

Still, as the only lineage that isn't "we are an assembled corpse made of sewn together bits that is animated by a magic ritual who hates our existence but for no reason are going to make more of our kind and try to become a mortal human rather than killing ourselves and ending the cycle of misery", I give more respect to the Ulgan than to all of the other lineages combined. It's incoherent and poorly stitched together from at least two incompatible design documents, but at least someone tried to be different.

Yeah, Galatea is the name popularly given to Pygmalion's statue in Greek myth. Though apparently not original. Still.

Galatea is of course the name of a French story from the 18th century that is based on a Greek story about a Persian dude. You could call it "Greek", but only in the way that if you had a group of Vampires called the "Strahds" that you could call them "British".

Of course, Promethean: the Created takes essentially nothing from the story except the name, and the name is French. So um... yeah.

It is the popularly known name of a statue which came to life in a Greek myth, even if the name was later applied in a retelling of the myth. Most people, if they know it at all, will know it as "the name of the statue Pygmalion fell in love with" not "something something post-classical french novel persian guy."

I'm not defending Promethean, I'm saying that one of the types is connected to Greece. It doesn't make anything else better, it's more just "Point of Order."

Most people think of Ovid when they hear the name Galatea, not Cervantes. And when most people hear the name Cervantes they think of the pirate from Soul Calibur. Ovid is much more widely known.

Chapter 3:
The Promethean Condition

Like all previous and subsequent chapters, this begins with the typesetter taking a dump on you with a page entirely in p22 Da Vinci Forward Regular, followed by a page with a doodle that doesn't have anything to do with anything, followed by an excerpt from a public domain source that has essentially nothing to do with the chapter contents and precious little to do with the book as a whole. Only after wasting two and a half pages with this crap can we actually get to the text of the chapter. The entire chapter is 30 pages, so this is actually a considerable expenditure of page count whose sole purpose seems to be to piss the reader off.

In any case, the beginning of the chapter is about a page-long philosophical tirade about how humans have empathy and similarities, man. And that Prometheans are different, dude. This philosophical rambling is apparently what the entire chapter was named after, because this essay is clearly named “The Promethean Condition”, and so is the chapter. Of course, it doesn't hold up on even cursory analysis, because last I checked Hutus and Tutsis had this whole thing where something north of half a million people died for no better reason than that people find it really easy to choose arbitrary distinctions to justify kicking other people out of the monkey sphere. Fortunately, that's short, and the majority of the chapter actually isn't about that at all.

This is the chapter where they bother to tell you what Prometheans are capable of inherently. You'd think this might have been important enough to tell you before they started talking about supernatural powers that enhance those inherent capabilities, but you know, whatever. In general, Prometheans are simply more resilient than mortal humans, needing less sleep, suffering no ravages of time, and being able to exert strength continuously without soreness or fatigue. This actually calls into question the Tammuz, whose “Bestowment” (which we recall is just a “Transmutation” that they happen to have earmarked by writing “Golem” on their character sheet) is about having unnatural endurance. See, mechanically what it does is to give you “9 again” on certain kinds of Stamina checks. But Prometheans don't generally have to make those kinds of Stamina checks. Like, at all. So the Tammuz get super endurance, but the super endurance they get for being a Promethean at all pretty much totally supersedes that. Obviously, this is another point in which there were multiple design concepts that didn't really fit together and no one ever bothered to iron it out before shitting it out.

Prometheans can also power themselves electrically, because absolutely all of them are “like Frankenstein's Monster” in every fucking way that counts. The rules for this are incredibly complicated, but the low down is that if you have any source of electricity at all (even a 9 volt battery), you can be fully healed of any amount of damage and totally fine with no downsides at all in a few seconds. It's not quite fast enough to use in combat unless you're throwing big power sources around, but it's fast enough that you can fully recover from near life ending wounds with nothing to reveal anything weird had happened during a commercial break. You regain your power points in various ways, but the most important way is by sleeping next to a bunch of your alchemical metal for four hours. Note that some people get an alchemical metal of “iron”, meaning that they can get their power points back by taking a nap in the car or in the laundry room; while other Prometheans get an alchemical metal of “gold” and have to crash in Scrooge's money bin in order to get any power points for the day. Fuck Balance!

But the Prometheans also have disadvantages. Like how they can't interact with normal humans or other supernatural creatures. But they can interact with other Prometheans. Indeed, they have this weird thing where their super special coteries let them email power points to each other and shit. Also, having other Prometheans in your super best friends group reduces the disquiet you inflict on mortals, but trying to put vampires or werewolves into the group just fucks you. Because using the examples of any media at all that use Frankenstein's Monster in the context of other supernaturals is apparently badwrong and you shouldn't do it. Bill Bridges will come to your house and steal your ten sided dice if you try to enact Monster Squad or Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein or Van Helsing or Hotel Transylvania or Adam's Family or Pagemaster or whatever.

The book goes on and on about how fucked up the lives of people get when you stay in one place for any length of time. It's actually totally gameable, by the way. If you just move around and don't use your overt powers in the presence you don't want to kill (spoiler alert: all your good powers are not overt anyway), it's really not much of a problem. But the ins and outs of what all this shit does goes on for – I shit you not – seventeen fucking pages. So I'm pretty sure that anyone who even tried to run this sort of thing would just sort of kick you in the balls if you ever tried to game the system and have a passably normal life. I mean, if you have the iron symbol on your forehead, you can get your power points back by sleeping in your car, meaning that if you want to move your desmesne a few blocks every day you can just do that. But for some reason this is not really considered as a plausible alternative to sitting around with your thumb up your ass until a torch wielding mob attacks.

But the thing the book really wants to talk to you about is your ability to make more Prometheans and also to fuck up that process and make Pandorans. This being nWoD mechanics, you are basically not going to fuck up the process, but the fact remains that making a new monster out of sewn together corpse bits and an Abby Normal brain is not fun and no one fucking cares.

This picture makes no real sense, but it makes more sense than the rant about the Generative Act in this book

Being able to live with other Prometheans seems to totally fuck up the entire concept. The whole story format with artificial humans is that they're alone because no one like them exists, and must try to fit in with ordinary people. But here, not only are there others like themselves, they can make more!

It obviates the entire thing about being forever alone, because you actually get mechanics allowing and incentivizing you to not be alone. Someone tried running this once - it didn't get very far. I remember wondering why the hell the Tammuz were somehow made of bodies. And then the Galatea player decided that instead of existential depression and desire to become human, they were totally happy with their immortal perfect body. Which apparently was also made of body parts.

However, it did bring up a good plot for a crazy enough Mage. Put a Promethean way the fuck out in the middle of nowhere (Antarctica maybe), and keep them in one spot until their "zone of fucked up" reached enormous levels. Now use Co-Location to make every major city "adjacent" to the zone. Worldwide disaster!

Well, you wouldn't want to do that normally, because every second you spend actually doing that makes mortals around you freak out as if you had just used one of your powers that makes mortals freak out (because healing from electricity is one of those powers). But while you're hooked up, you heal 4 bashing or 2 lethal every 3 seconds. Which is twice as fast as Vampires regenerate while they are spending Blood. Also, you can just kind of stand there while people shoot you with shot guns if that is what you want to do.

In general though, you can wait to lick a car battery for a moment that there are no mortals in line of sight. The time you spend freaking out any mortal who can see you is measured in seconds, so you could shock yourself back to full health in the bathroom without giving anything away.

No. That would be way better, because the curlicues on each letter would be different, so it wouldn't have that maddening quality of a shitty over-embellished font where it uses the same curlicue on the same letter eighteen times on one page.
