ringtone for you so you hear it when it rings or for other people to hear while it is ringing on their side? O.o
it's an android, you should be able to use pretty much any old mp3 file you have saved to the phones storage locally i think . .

There are also any number of apps you can use to find ringtones. I personally rather like Zedge.

Huh. Despite Australia not being in the European Economic Area*, we don't need a visa to visit the Shengen zone (such as Sweden). Apparently I can just stumble out of a plane with my passport and go "Huh? Why is everyone talking funny, I did a lot of drinking last night and now I don't know why it's so cold" and they'll go "Yeah, seems fine."**

It's going to be a while, like more than a year, but I'm now seriously looking into it, and then I can have travelled internationally like everyone else in the family. No really, I've never been beyond Australia other than as an infant (somewhere in South-East Asia).

*I think I can figure out why.
**Okay so I'd also need to show that I have sufficient funds to take care of myself and to fly back within 90 days. But that can basically be done at the airport, it isn't a tricky pre-planned thing.

So there's this ship minis game called Attack Wing that Wizkids/Neca is making which comes in Star Trek and Star Wars flavours. It's kind of cool, but I've never been that big into either ST or SW. But I can't find any info about potential other versions.

Not that it much matters, I suppose, because I can't think of any franchises I like which would interest the friend who introduced the game to me. And scale matters, so it's not like I could run, say, pokemon figures with the same rules up against Star Trek ships, unless The Pokemon Company starts making some truly gigantic pokemon.

Babylon 5 is out for similar reasons (though it could conceivably be compatible with SWAW) because it features more personal space fighters than large war ships.

Good fucking luck to NECA on an Invader Zim license, that would require roughly 2000 gallons of virgin blood and a demon with more power than all of Hell combined to pull off. Also see Babylon 5.

Starcraft is a highly unlikely acquisition for NECA.

Never got into Halo or Mass Effect because I don't own a current gen system...

Yeah, basically, the game itself is cool, but the franchises don't interest me, and the ones which would are not likely to ever be acquired and made.

So I'm getting used to my new computer... It came with Windows 7 and Office 2010. I want to love it, but I don't. The constant theme in these versions of Microsoft software is "Let's put a big icon with some text in your face, even though 90% of the icons and text are associated with things you don't want and will never use."

I have broken out into tears three times so far today because using the new Office is so frustrating that I want to scream. It's like Microsoft took everything about human psychology and where eyes look at screens and deliberately put shit you don't want in the screen-space where you look the most. And what you do want is on the fringes somewhere... WHO GIVES A RAT'S ASS ABOUT TABLE STYLES!? WHY ARE THEY BIGGER THAN the teeny-itty-bitty BORDERS OPTIONS??!

I am slowly putting my frustrations into customizing the damned ribbon, but it takes forever and I have other things I need to be doing - like actually designing the save-the-date magnet for my brother's wedding. And I can't do it because Microsoft hates people. AUGH!!!

I've bent Windows over my knee pretty hard so far - I consider that a rousing success. Office is just ridiculous. Especially if - heaven forbid - you want to do something that isn't on the damned ribbon. There's no menu to access for more options.

Once I can sit down and scream at it for a while, I'll be fine. :)

In other pointless commentary... I get eMail from a chain of fabric and craft stores called JoAnn. They are a pretty big company with their own Wikipedia entry. Giovanni calls it the "Make-It" store because that's where I go whenever I need parts for making something.

Anyway... My sale eMail from them today had the subject line, "Arrgh! Tomorrow is National Talk Like a Pirate Day!" My craft store is now reminding me to talk like a pirate. Color me impressed. ;)

So, recently I moved into a building where there is only wireless internet. Both the router and the adaptor I hastily purchased for my desktop are annoyingly volatile, which is really getting on my nerves. Also, I recently managed to get my video driver updated for the first time in over a year, and apparently the updated version has a blue-screen bug.

So I haven't been using my desktop much lately.

Uh, basically it's an apartment building that has been entirely rented out by my college for undergrad housing. There are high-end wireless routers strung along the hallways at regular intervals. There are also cable jacks in every room, but as far as I can gather none of them are switched on. Admittedly, I haven't actually tested it because I don't have the right kind of cable, and don't feel like going out and buying one to find out.

Unfortunately, wireless is inevitably a bit of a crapshoot, and the damn routers are on the ceiling so we can't just reset them when they go down. Also, it seems that if the connection so much as flickers, my desktop stops bothering trying to access the internet until I disable and enable the adapter, and about half the time it refuses to turn back on until I take it out of the port and plug it back in.

The regular dorms are much more cramped, but they have common areas on every floor and stupidly fast fiber-optic that performs pretty much flawlessly.

ask about getting the cable jack switched on at least.
or ask around wether or not they are actually working.
if they are, get a cable and use it instead.
there is still nothing better than a fixed net connection.

Good news on my end:

Got a $400 bonus, er, excuse me, Performance Award yesterday.

And slightly guild-ridden part: I know not everyone got the same amount, because a co-worker was talking about how glad he is to get that extra $295.

Using my hard-won social acumen, I held my tongue on this. But it's nice to know I'm appreciated.

Why would they make an award 295. Just give the guy 300. Prices end in 95 so they feel lower, bonuses should end in 00 so that they feel higher.

But congrats on your bonus!

If there are 20 of them, everyone else got $5 less, and he got $100 more.
Bonuses aren't magical money from the sky; someone has to justify then distribute that stuff.

I'm looking to buy a smartphone at some point in the nearish future. My current phone cost £10 and was pretty much the cheapest I could get, but I'm going to need access to mobile apps, would like to be able to more easily develop mobile sites, and want to have a camera again.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what to get? Note that I live in England so it has to work and be reasonable here. I have basically fuck all money, so it needs to be cheap, but I don't really know what is actually a reasonable amount of money to spend.

Some people I know say that I should be looking for an iPhone 4S as a minimum. Is that more than needed. Which is the better OS considering I haven't used any smartphone OS so it will be the same learning curve for any?

And then are any PAYGs any good? The Three PAYG says it's 3p per minute and 2p per text, but looking deeper it also says that it is 26p per minute and 11p per text. What's up with that?

I've like the Nexus 4, but I'm sure there are better ones. I've heard there's a cheaper version of the iPhone coming out soon, but I guess it'd need an adapter since it's a NA version? I know dick all about smart phones.

So a friend (and roommate) of mine died just today.

This is the first time someone I actually know well has passed away, and it just doesn't register. He was maybe four days away from moving in and now he just... won't. It's so unreal.

Also, does anyone have recommendations for how hold small memorials? I'm not arranging a service, but I wanted to hold some gathering in his honor. Is that like something you serve drinks at?

My condolences to YLM.

In good news I now have regular Internet access. Unfortunately, it's through a fucking iPad. Terrible.

More good news: I'm getting a proper laptop by the end of the week. Bad news: I locked myself in my roommates bedroom and I'm going to miss work.

Yeah, spend some time as a group doing the kind of thing you'd be doing as a group were he there, the kind of thing he would want to be part of. Even if that's nothing special, just hanging out and having pizza. Talk about the good times.

I'm sorry for your loss - you might find that it doesn't "bother" you (for lack of a better word?) for some time, and then one day you're going "Let's all do this!" with some friends and realise he would be all over that and is missing.

Sorry to hear, YLM. I believe drinking is all but required.

For my part- I just fucked up a bit on my school paper's facebook. One of the editors wrote an op-ed piece bitching about mean smokers inflicting second hand smoke on her precious unbirthed wriggling larvaunbirthed wriggling human-larva.

I first restrained my personal thoughts about it to my personal page, not even linking to it. Then a discussion on the facebook share post started. I posted an inflammatory comment rebutting someone's suggestion that the campus should be smoke-free--namely that if we're going to do that, we should ban something historically more harmful too, like christianity--which is fine, it was made under my personal account, whatever.

Then someone said that smokers are the most inconsiderate people.

Mind you, I was on my phone. And android phones have a separate app for managing non-personal pages. An app that looks identical to the app for personal pages.

I accidentally said something along the lines of "I think murderers, rapists and thieves trump smokers in terms of inconsideration since they take away more important things more permanently than a smoker robbing you of a breath or two of air" ...with the paper's account.

Fuck.

I noticed the mistake and hastily deleted it.

Then I got texts from my EiCs, one saying "Hey, dude? Lay off for tonight, we need to have a discussion tomorrow." the other conveying a tone more along the lines "What the fuck!? Not good!"

I explained. I still expect a bit of a shaming tomorrow, but whatever, shit happens. Now I know to be damned sure what my phone is doing.
