Going back to Starship Troopers, my favorite non-violent moment in the movie was when the sergeant was literally handing out toys to the troops to boost their morale. I mean, that's just so blunt that it actually becomes nuanced.

It actually took me a bit to remember the toys scene. I'm assuming he meant the scene where he handed out footballs and such.erik wrote:showerscene.jpg
And you preferred the toys?
I actually prefer the scene just after-
"Rico, get your ass out here now. ...who's in there with you? *sees the chick* Ok, make that five minutes."
Plus NPH as an SS-esque psychic was pretty cool.

My favorite parts are the news segments; they're hilarious, especially the one at the end.
Also this quote, which (I feel, at least) made the satire obvious even in the middle of the film:

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

I'd find that comic funnier if SMBC didn't recycle the 'ha ha, humans love sticking stuff up their asses and it grosses out the aliens' gag from not too long ago.

AH turned me on to these, and now I feel like sharing, because sharing causes Hypsibius dujardini to have epic rock concerts. In space.

The eclipse last night was pretty cool! I almost missed it because it was listed as the 15th on my calendar.

It's a fairly interesting essay on Jack Chick, but the real gem is the dictionary at the end.

You could do worse for a fantasy or CoCesque RPG than to repurpose his art. There is a lot of it and with a consistent style. HehDarth Rabbitt wrote:The Imp

Captain America 2.
In 616 Cap's one of the best fighters in the world. Previously the MCU has mostly shown him brawling. They showed him fighting with slightly more finesse against Loki, but he still wasn't that great. Apparently he's been training since then, because his fights in The Winter Soldier are fantastic. He completely wrecks a ship filled with pirates in the opening scene and it was glorious.
The actual plot is really good, and there are plenty of supers, but it is difficult to rave about them without spoiling the movie.

Yeah, Winter Soldier might have the best action scenes of any Marvel movie so far. They don't quite answer the verisimilitude question of why the bad guys don't just shoot Captain America from far away. But they're really well-done.Sir Neil wrote:Captain America 2.

Overall, the movie was great on a scene-by-scene basis, but I found very little of it memorable. It did take a take a problem I thought I would have with the movie, based on the first half, and subvert that problem altogether, which I appreciated.

Just saw Winter Soldier last night, and loved it.
I do, however, keep watching literally every scene with the shield and think "It absorbs vibrations, that shouldn't work that way" (like when Cap is stumbling back when Batroc kicks his shield)
But then, I never took a physics course, so my understanding of Newton's Laws is sketchy.

except that it is inconsistent with how it worked when Thor hit him with his hammer in Avengers. There were several times in Winter Soldier where I was left thinking "that's not the way they said it's supposed to work".Prak_Anima wrote:Just saw Winter Soldier last night, and loved it.
