I'm seriously considering running a solo game for myself (haven't done any meatspace gaming in a while due to scheduling difficulties and kinda miss it). Any advice on doing this sort of thing?

Hmm... hadn't considered gamebooks. Thanks.
Huh, quite a few seem to be available for free, legally.

I don't like anime either.fbmf wrote:Me neither, but my wife is a fan of both. She will sometimes recycle anime plots when she GMs for me because she knows I won't have a clue.Count Arioch the 28th wrote:I don't think Anime is all that great. Also, not a Dr. Who fan.
As opposed to chick flicks, she makes me watch the weeping angel episodes with her because they scare her.

Well, that's not true. I like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, but that's more a genre thing.
I used to like Dr. Who and stopped when I realized the show was zero-stakes. Here's an interesting plot rule about time travel whoops just kidding.

If you're willing to spend the money, there is a German publisher rereleasing the series in updated hardbacks. They are very pretty books, but understandably pricy for it.radthemad4 wrote:Hmm... hadn't considered gamebooks. Thanks.

DAMMIT SHRAPNEL
MY EYES
He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

I can't afford to spend much at the moment, but I'm pretty happy with the free version. Being able to play it in a browser with clickable links is quite convenient. I downloaded the website version of the first book on my laptop (so I can even play it when not in wifi zones) and got some good use out of it.
Since this is a confession thread... I 'rolled' 10s on starting Combat Skill and Endurance, often chose from a list of outcomes I'm supposed to roll for, ignored inventory limits and save scummed like crazy...

I never played it again. I got tired of having to save every time I moved somewhere because the random encounters would beat the living crap out of me even though I was slaughtering the story missions (except for the few missions where you have to protect an NPC and it walks up to the baddies and hits them with a stick on the very first round, then gets swarmed and killed before any of your guys even gets to go). Lord knows if I saw NPC chocobos in the random enemy party I might was well reset because they would all one-shot me to death.sigma999 wrote:It took me 15 years to get around to beating Final Fantasy Tactics.
I can't get into it.

In this moment, I am Ur-phoric. Not because of any phony god’s blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my int score.
FFT is probably my favorite Final Fantasy game. It's been quite a few years since I first played it but I know I spent about an hour going through the tutorial just to learn how to play the damn thing. After that the toughest fights I had were one or two early story missions, missions I had to protect people, and very few random encounters. Other than that the game wasn't too difficult. I know for sure I beat the final boss the very first time.Count Arioch the 28th wrote:I never played it again.
