DUNGEONS and dragons.

your horse died while being tied up outside the dungeon/cavern... you get pissed off...

your horse was stolen during one of those times....

it really isnt a game about mounted combat, so horses are really an afterthought.

horse would be good in mass-combat, but again the game isnt made for that.

small party that goes around doing things. it has a specific type of story it can tell, and others you have to find a way to tell if you want.

it has dragons, but like horses mounted combat.. dragon riders arent what the game is about so the rules dont give for that or naval combat.... or underwater combat.

it all goes back to Chainmail.
Play the game, not the rules.

good read (Note to self Maxus sucks a barrel of cocks.)

Wait, why would you tie your horse outside the dungeon? Most dungeons have to accommodate Large creatures. If you can't ride a horse through a dungeon then you couldn't have centaurs in there either.

Exactly. If a dungeon isn't big enough to get a horse into, it's most definitely too small to have a dragon inside. And if there's no dragons inside the dungeon, why bother with it?

The dragon's entrance could be in the ceiling, along a route that can only be flown, not ridden by a ground bound mount.

That still doesn't stop pegasus mounts of course.

would goblins make entrances big enough for horses? does a horse need to walk into a cave for the goblins to eat it?

if some beast of burden is used, do ALL entrances need to be size enough for then to also exit through it?

where do you put your horse at while swimming that sewer to get to the next room?

while SOME dungeons accommodate large creatures.. not all PATHS do.

I am amused that, of everything in the original post about what was wrong with 2e, what Shad chose to focus on was "What does this game have against horses?"
Don't bother trying to impress gamers. They're too busy trying to impress you to care.
