Edit: I forgot to say that psionics, IIRC, was one of the first things to consistently have PrCs that gave things instead of other things (namely, ML) instead of something for nothing (which is ridiculous at face value with the classes that get things for nothing - spellcasters - not needing any extra power in the first place).

That is indeed amongst the things which is fucking stupid and horrible about Psionics. Casters in D&D have a very simple rubric to determine if they are level appropriate: the spells they cast. If you drop "caster level" or manifester level, or character level, or any other arbitrary checksum to determine if you are in fact tall enough to ride this ride, then you can't fucking ride the ride, can you?

Introducing the multicaster problem to every single prestige class for casters isn't a fix for anything - it just makes all the prestige classes unviable because multicasters are unviable.

Yeah, offhand I really can't think of anything they could give you that would make up for the loss of caster levels.

4E threads make me cry

Post by tzor »

Yea, I know, they shouldn't make me cry. I should expect a bunch of loosers in the er Gleemax forums and when they live up to their expectations I should not be surprised. I mean postulating manure in a vaccuum (because there is a lot of 4E that is still unknown) is their speciality. But when it starts getting into topics like women in gaming ...

Astrid's parlor is the best example of why some WOTC posters should be forever banned from any serious discussion of anything. Oh there are some good threads there, Art of Females has a lot of good posts about how you can have someone wearing appealing and yet still functional armor or clothing.

The "I hate Astrid's Parlor" thread, on the other hand, simply makes me want to cry.

Geez louise, that thread is messed up.

I fully and freely admit that I often claim I don't allow women because "D&D is a gentleman's persuit" to ruffle a few feathers, but that thread takes it to new levels.

We're only adding fuel to the fire. It is like attention-starved celebrities; the more we look, the crazier they get. It is a vicious cycle for the celebrity, but entertaining for those who watch.

Nothing beats the guy (and I don't remember the exact thread, as I got frustrated and just said to hell with it) who claimed there would not be rules for 'minions' right after reading the design article that explicitly said 'There will be rules for minions'.
:disgusted:

Worse, its not even a rare thing. They'll take a straight forward statement and twist it to mean the exact opposite, usually in the stupidest way possible.

So now I check in every couple of days to see if there is a new article with some inkling of wtf is going on. At least the new playtest article doesn't involve a kludged conversion of a 3.5 game, which strangely isn't informative when you don't know which stuff is actual 4E info, and which stuff they just made up.

They're stupid and they by and large don't care if the game is good, they just want the stupid crap they care about to be the same or better. And, of course, rumors are facts and facts are rumors depending on how it affects their character's power level.

All forums should be a frikin' safe haven, and I of course realize that I do participate in girl-gamers boards under the rubric that I have something to say about the stupid guys' attitudes in various games, and the difficulty of finding other girl gamers because of the number of really, really rude guys.

At least we can beat up Count for his backward, patristic ways, and he realizes that if we were all at a table he'd often find pints of milk hurled at his head for what he says, right?

One gaming site I frequent have little "Guys Only" and "Girls Only" boards. They're set up so that you can only access one, based on what you set your gender as when you registered. Dunno' about the Gentlemen's Club, but the female one really doesn't see much activity. Mostly, people just post in the threads for everybody - probably because the M/F-only ones aren't designed to be safehavens, they're designed to be "This is something I don't want the other sex to know about" or whatever.

And I agree with Crissa insofar as every thread/board/forum should be a safehaven for everyone. But standard "Don't be a prick" site rules can handle that just fine.

If I didn't expect a reaction, I wouldn't have said it.

Ironically, the strongest negative reaction I've gotten from saying that has been from a homosexual male. He first gave me a lecture about how female gamers were automatically hotter than non-female gamers, then tried to lecture me about how some of the best roleplayers he knew where female, when I shut him up by saying "You can have all the roleplaying you want, just as long as it doesn't get in the way of the game."

He also said there weren't any females desperate enough to have sex with me in his vampire LARP he runs.

Aw, he managed to work some big-people words and [paraphrased] quotes into the most boring attempt at a diatribe I've seen yet.

Oh noes, 4E will be different, we'll all be cyber-zombies.

@Count- its been a while since I've interacted with vampire LARPers, but I remember most of them as being desperate enough to sleep with *anything*.

So, I'm getting the impression that I would really enjoy joining a vampire LARP. :uptosomething:

Meanwhile on the article on the death of roleplaying, I'll just say I could not disagree more. You have to read in between the lines of what people have said in public but I'm convinced that this is far from an attempt to bring D&D into the all electronic age, but an attempt to keep the hard print media going in the 21st century internet age. Whether people will fall for the "you have to have a hard copy to get the electronic rights" is a big question ... but if you don't try you will never know if you could have succeeded.

I undestand your point, but if one loses, say, 2 MLs through 20 levels, does the character become unable to contribute? Especially because the PrC abilities could (and should, of course) be level-appropriate. What I'd advance as fair-trade examples are the slayer (for a psion), the constructor, and the Complete Nerf's ebon saint (for a lurk).

But rest assured, I prefer classes having actual abilities instead of spellcasting; then one doesn't have to do this, which's quite silly anyway.
