I vote to eat a meal and go left, as our hero needs to resist fascism to stand against evil.

You follow the corridor until it turns sharply to the right. On turning the corner, you see a tall reptilian creature wearing armor and holding a curved sword. The Lizard Man appears to be guarding some sacks that are piled up against the wall.

You cannot cast Creature Sleep.

On seeing you, the Lizard Man hisses loudly and advances toward you with his sword held high.

Indiana Jones Attack Strength: 19, LIZARD MAN Attack Strength: 15. LIZARD MAN's Stamina is 2
Indiana Jones Attack Strength: 20, LIZARD MAN Attack Strength: 15. LIZARD MAN is dead.

You tip open the sacks, but they contain merely spices and grain. A quick search through the Lizard Man's clothes produces a large iron key, which you slip into your shirt pocket. You move on and arrive at another T-junction.

The corridor soon comes to a dead end, though there is a ladder leading up through a hole in the ceiling.

Climb the ladder through the hole?
Go back to the T-junction and go the other way?

Climb the ladder through the hole (and fingers crossed we don't see another letter).

It's a shame the Messenger already used the H, because the ladder probably looks like

H

and would worry an adventurer.

Poking your head through the hole in the ceiling, you see a small, cluttered room lit by a single candle resting on top of a table. Crouched in a corner of the room is a sinewy little man wearing a ragged sackcloth. On seeing you, he snatches a wooden pole off the floor.

Talk to him?
Attack him?
Climb back down the ladder and go back to the T-junction and go the other way?

The Gnome is grateful that you did not slay him. He tells you that he stumbled across Vatos many years ago and decided to stay. He is nothing but a scavenger these days, but he says he is quite happy. Vatos was deserted for many years, but gradually humans and other creatures found it while seeking shelter, and a few of them stayed. There is no law in Vatos and nobody in control, although the most powerful usually get their way. Passing caravans are attacked for food, the raids being organized by a High Priestess and her slaves. You ask him if he has heard of Malbordus, but he shakes his head, saying, "I don't take much interest in people. I just spend my time collecting and scavenging. Perhaps you have something to trade? I would give a lot for one of those fancy things that you look through to make things seem a lot closer than they really are."

You do have a telescope.

You take the brass telescope out of your pack and dangle it in front of the Gnome to tease him. He starts to rub his hands together and snigger in excitement. He kicks a rug out of the way and starts to pull at a previously hidden iron ring that is attached to one of the flagstones. The stone lifts up to reveal a small chamber piled high with objects and items accumulated by the Gnome over the years. You rummage through and can hardly believe your eyes when you come upon a small Crystal Dragon. It is one of the artefacts that you seek. You take it and give the Gnome the telescope. Bidding him farewell, you climb down the ladder and walk past the T-junction.

(Yes, the earlier playthrough failed at the very first choice once the PC set out: if you cross the bridge rather than taking the barge, you don't get the telescope, you can't get the Crystal Dragon, and the Gnome will die horribly when Malbordus comes to take it from him. Oh, and something rather unpleasant will happen to the PC, too.)

The corridor eventually opens into a dingy room in which two Rat Men are busily chewing on the carcass of a Goblin. On seeing you, they spring to their feet and attack you with their swords.

You soon arrive at a T-junction. Looking right you see that the corridor is covered with broken glass, and so you turn left into the new corridor.

The corridor ends at another T-junction.

Turn left?

You pass a doorway in the left-hand wall which has an ornate carved surrounding of hideous creatures being consumed by flames.

Open the door?
Continue past it?

The corridor turns right, and around the corner you see a man lying facedown on the stone floor. He is wearing bloodstained armor, and his sword lies a metre away. He grunts on hearing your footsteps, and tries to reach for his sword.

Run him through with your sword?
Kick his sword away and try to talk to him?
Step over him and walk on?
