Are they even making modules? I'm getting the impression they're just throwing it around as a buzzword for the sole purpose of trying to please everyone and failing hardcore.

I think that's one of the big ideas they quickly gave up on.

i thin k Monte left in part due to contract, that was similar to what was recently on ENWorld for someone named "Stan!". wherein he couldnt continue being the silent partner in a business he half owned, and work on his children's books, WHILE being full-time at HASBRO, because YOU become property of HASBRO, and ALL your ideas from contract signing to official end of contract, belong to HASBRO. they wouldn't exempt him from those clauses that prevented him from doing things outside of, and before, he started doing consultant work for D&D, to become full-time.

Monte was doing consultant work, and being a BIG name, though only important to some; he would have had to either cease ALL outside projects, or ALL his creations become the sole property of HASBRO.

yet Jon S the art director still runs a side business, and seems to only be a freelance art director for D&D...not sure exactly how THAT works, or why he tries time and again to decide the mechanics or fluff within the game from his position as an artist. ergo why his recent article admits that Dragon's Eye View is uninspiring and boring as he writes it, as well his inability to do anything but draw BAD art, means HASBRO allows him exemptions because they do NOT want to own all his BAD ideas, nor take credit for them.

as to HASBRO employee income, i am pretty sure there are some good number that were mentioned somewhere with the release of either Dave Noonan, Jon Tweet, Scott Rouse, or someone that said the money wasnt bad, but one of them parted ways based on ideas. so it obviously was someone who chose to leave, and not someone who was laid-off (aka FIRED).

no, the designers jobs are to decide the mechanics or fluff, the art director's job is to make all the pretty pictures, or assign which artist should do which needed picture to fill the whitespace in a book on a page for whatever reason the editing team decided a picture was needed on that page.
correct wrote:Designer: A halfling is half the size of a human, with big feet and small head.
Artist: "Draws halfling as per flufff"
this isnt the case of Jon S being a conceptual artist that actually takes part in the design process, an art director is an artist in charge of the art department, to corral all the other artists and make sure they are getting the correct drawings/paintings/sketches/...art done in time, and possibly drawing some himself. the art director should be taking the mechanics and fluff and handing the information TO other artists in a way to get a visual depiction of the subject of the "art".

this is how Wayne "Spikey" Reynolds art failed, because obviously there was no art director to tell him to stop adding spikes to cod-pieces, brassieres. kneecaps, and buttflaps, or armor OR regular clothing, to no clothing at all.

if HASBRO, WotC, or any of its employees is confused about Jon S's job title, then they might need to remove that position and replace it with something termed correctly in the real world.

Art director = director of the art department.

many businesses have them, and not all those businesses want their art director designing some game (RP,card, board) with this "art" coming out of that department.

Jon S. is NOT a designer, based on his title alone.
Jon Schindehette joined Wizards of the Coast in 1997 as the website art director. In the intervening years he has worked as the marketing art director, novels art director, and creative manager. In January of 2009 he moved into the role of senior creative director for D&D.
:twitch:

hmm, seems they changed something ina previous article, his title WAS art director, but you dont move from art director, to senior designer. being able to draw gives ZERO qualifications for creating an RPG or any other game.

so did Jon S or Mearls take over Bill S. actual job then? and note this new position Jon S holds is AFTER 4th was released, and the previous "creative manager" position might have been in part of the failed 4th edition.

now i need to find if on his facebook, art6order shit, or twitter; somewhere he called himself D&D Art Director, AFTER his first article appeared. cause i had never before heard of him until that article.

It's all fine and dandy what you think an Art director is supposed to do. But I doubt they are going to change the job description that has been in place since TSR.

um no, Jon S was hired by Wotc in 1997. and WotC redesigned the company for the most part when it absorbed it and moved it to Renton. all positions were pretty much renamed, or named int he first placed.

Please point out your source for how the art director position changed.

Please provide your source for stating that it is the art directors job to make pretty pictures. And that it isn't the art directors job to work with the designers on deciding on the fluff.
shadzar wrote:(...)you dont move from art director, to senior designer. being able to draw gives ZERO qualifications for creating an RPG or any other game.
Hell give me a source that says an Art Director working on D&D needs to be able to draw in the first place.

Because lets be honest, the only reason I need to wash my hands is because I've been touching your asspulls which directly contradict what actual an Art Director who worked for both TSR and WOTC said about her job.

Goddamnit Mearls. You were saying stuff that everyone knew, but at least you identified the problem pretty well. Until the last paragraph.
Seriously, how the hell is this a good idea wrote: As an aside, it's worth noting that monster special abilities don't have to obey that rule. The medusa can still turn you to stone on a single failed save. DMs can simply choose to mix and match monsters as they wish, avoiding instant kill critters if that's not what the group wants. For spells and other player options, we feel it's best to give the DM confidence that players can build characters from the available resources without things becoming wildly unbalanced.
Seriously? So its ok for DMs to instagib players but players can't do the same to the bosses? How is this a good thing? What crack is Mearls smoking?

he is finding out what D&Dis about, as contrary to Wyatt's namby-pamby "everything is safe and cant hurt you" version of D&D. Mearl's is doing what people largely want, the mythological monsters to adhere to their myths.

those people that want to use mythological creatures will be able to, and those that dont like them, can just not use them.

Mearls design ideas > Wyatts design ideas.

this kind of nonsense is what happens when Candy Land D&D, such as 4th, meets real D&D and real myths.

you dont want Medusa to use "turn to stone" but still want the creature, then just dont let her use it.

those people that never like D&D and real world myths (Perseus to Arthur Pendragon), well maybe it is time for them to find a new game they will like better, if they cant accept it existing in the game.

but Mearls doesnt have the balls to say that, he must make the ONE GAME TO RULE THEM ALL, so must include others such as Gary did, so is doing what the game was ALWAYS intended to do...letting the players choose which monsters they want to use, letting the PCs choose what to fight or flee from. but above all, forcing DMs brought up on and starting with 3rd and 4th to learn how to run the game, and if they cant, then let someone else do it that CAN handle the responsibility.

which might just mean no more CR, ECL, LA, WBL, and other babysitting tools that dont even work, but players learning how to play so the designers can design fun stuff, while the players learn on their own what they like.

For everyone else, there's Pathfinder.

@Mearls.
You can't detect evil in a campaign that doesn't use alignments.
Dude should read the AD&D versions. They detect "evil" in that they tell you if anyone in the area is thinking of killing you right now, which is a totally handy spell to have without alignments. He's going to change it to detect undead and fiends, and then pats himself on the back for making spells no one will ever fucking cast. Seriously? Is that rotting corpse an undead? That's a spell?
A chaotic good paladin
Le sigh. Fucking moral relativist bullshit. "Oh, but players have a hard time being lawful good all the time". Yes, yes they do. That's the whole point.
which makes it impossible to stack certain spells on top of each other ... without having multiple casters in the party
Because multiple casters will never happen. Yay, his clever class balancing option is that one Cleric is no better than a Fighter unless there's also a Wizard there. ?!?
Getting Fireball back to a position of prominence in the game is a key goal for spellcasting in D&D Next.
OK, he identified that 3e went a little far with the hit points of Giants. This is good. That he suggests it was better in AD&D is not so good. EGG's own house rules had Hill Giants with ~76 hit points (8 x 1d6+6) rather than the published 38. And fireball was still plenty awesome even when it could self-immolate.
For instance, 4E's use of a series of a saving throws before reaching an instant kill for a spell like flesh to stone is
a fucking nightmare in play at the table. Oh gods, don't fix the fucking casters by making magic not do anything! Gah! A 10th level 5e Fighter right now is doing over 50 damage per round, which is killing giants, why can the Wizard not blow his top level spell to kill a single fucking giant when it already gets a save? Gah!

Ah well, it's not like I expect much of the man. But seriously, if you call the spell Flesh to Stone, it should just turn your flesh to stone, or at least safely encase you in carbonite.

sadly he did, but only partially. the Red Box, though not sure if it was Moldvay or Mentzer. i am thinking Moldvay, and 1st AD&D...in parts.

he neglected that 2nd and Mentzer cleared up things and fixed them form 1st and Moldvay, so he is working off the broken sets as it were. though yes those editions are playable as-is.

he is failing the design goals of DDN because he doesnt understand the editions well enough to include them all.

Mearls is working under the rule of HASBRO, the appeasement of the gamers WotC created with a game only slightly related to D&D, made by people who didnt understand or didnt like D&D (thus only worked for TSR under LW after all the creators of D&D were gone, or WotC after it bought TSR), so they really cannot understand the original pre-WotC versions if they tried, because they already disliked them that much and changed them. it would take Mearls and company at least 1 year of steady playing each edition all day from the hour they come into work to the hour they leave to understand the earlier pre-WotC editions. then they would still need help from people that DO understand them and how they work, and play with them running games and in games run by Mearls and company.

only after that will they understand that the wishes and playstyles for each edition are different because they are aimed at DIFFERENT audiences. and the D&D editions (3.x, 4th) made for people that didnt like D&D, wont get along so well in games that play to the playstyles of the D&D players that DID like D&D.

he jsut cannot see the disconnect and is trying to reverse engineer 4th and 3rd back to the old editions, rather than building form the ground up.

Jon S want D&D porn NOW!

"an image that shows the essence of D&D to me" ~ Jon S

Image

he thinks D&D is about a guy on water's edge filled with nude teen girls.

guess they will be changing the name from D&D Next, D&DN to D&D Porn, D&DP.

aside from the fact that EVERY article by Mearls, Wyatt and Jon contradict each other. it doesnt seem anyone is in charge or knows what they are doing.

Mearls wants tight, unifrom math and real mythology
Wyatt wants gamist terms that dont represent real things, but things like "nymph" is a keyword for the game
Jon S wants D&D mechanics and fluff to adhere to his art because he thinks he is the next Da Vinci or Picasso, or that anyone gives a shit about his art.

i cant wait until all three are fired....

Huh. Guy is classier than I thought. Given the terrible art designs for 4e, I'm entirely surprised they were even aware of real art, let alone older pieces that actually invoked a proper 'classical fantasy' feel.

Nice to see something positive for a change.

yeah, but the problem is, he doesnt understand the art he displays and how it doesnt relate to what he is trying to express with it. Jon S may be a good artist, but doesnt understand art.

"a picture is worth a thousand words"

so what is that trying to say about D&D? i see nothing that denotes adventure, unless a sexual adventure or sensual one, and the random harlots table was removed from the game for a reason. D&D isnt about sex.

it could depict a simpler time, but there is rarely anything simple about those simpler times.

it could also mean a carefree time, in opposition to Wyatts "D&D is about killing things and taking their stuff, not traipsing through faerie rings and talking to the little people". but they are both wrong, cause it IS about both carefree times being fun and killing things being fun, at the amounts a player or group wants to add to their own game. the core game must be inclusive of both, not dismissive of either.

it could be Jon just wants nude female art to return to D&D because the maturity of the player should be able to accept it in order to deal with all the other subjects of D&D.

there is really no telling what he sees as this piece of art to be the "essence" of D&D, other than combining it with his other articles to show he is a closet sexist and it shows in ALL his article that involve women, or he is trying to hard to be a PC feminist, and is coming off sounding wrong each time.

"it is better to keep ones mouth shut and let people think him a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt." ~ Mark Twain

D&D encompasses adventure in a mythical and magical fantasy land spanning any time period prior to industrial age, and in some cases including firearms age, but majorly expressed in terms of medieval Europe and feudalistic societies.

his chosen picture doesnt really say ANY of that to me. i just see a teen to middle aged male crouching near water containing about a dozen nude teen females. no adventure, no myth or magic, not really fantasy in but one sense, it does have a good time period with the toga....but even that time period is limited to not fully understand HOW his image relates to D&D.

which makes me think YET AGAIN, that Jon S doesnt know what D&D is, because he went from being a web designer to a game designer over night...and if the old WotC site was his web design, its a good thing he stopped doing THAT for a living!

Which is why you come across as an idiot nearly all the time.

I can see several potential 'adventure' themes that could be happening in that piece, just off the top of my head:
1- Negotiation with the nymphs, or trying to find out information for the adventure
2- Reward for the questing knight at the end of his journey
3- a random encounter that could go well (friendly glade to rest for the night), or could go badly (drowned by the wicked fair folk).

There are a lot of more subtle variations (even a villain giving orders to minions, or, more interestingly, vice versa) that could be going on, but it is a lot more interesting than the 'red-robed blood elf summoning shit' that was the poster for 4e. Or the crappy line drawings in 1e, or any of the crap by that defective, Brom.

I'm in shock at what the creative team dragged in. I wouldn't have pegged anyone working on D&D as characterizing their ideas about the game in terms of fine art. Those aren't just paintings, they're images that capture a story.

Why don't they make that game?

Shadzar has strange definition of porn. Or maybe I just can't see the underwater fisting on my dark-ass monitor. Seriously though, she's got his arm, it's not pornography when people hold hands.

Anyhoo, they pick classical art because that's how fucking far you have to go back to find something out of copyright. It's that bad now. Also, 5e is totally retro-pretentious.

He jumps like a damned dragoon, and charges into battle fighting rather insane monsters with little more than his bare hands and rather nasty spell effects conjured up solely through knowledge and the local plantlife. He unerringly knows where his goal lies, he breathes underwater and is untroubled by space travel, seems to have no limits to his actual endurance and favors killing his enemies by driving both boots square into their skull. His agility is unmatched, and his strength legendary, able to fling about a turtle shell big enough to contain a man with enough force to barrel down a near endless path of unfortunates.

the problem is the piece he chose that isnt copyright to someone else, really doesnt say D&D i have had about 100 people look at the picture and tell me what they think it means, and NOT ONE mentioned D&D.

for a piece of art to have a meaning it must depict in some way the subject. there is nothing really about a swimming/bathing scene, or a select-your-prostitute scene, or some such that says D&D.

it isnt the nudity that is the problem, it is just so far out of context for D&D.

the picture he chose is as useful as the sex scene in Lethal Weapon 2. it doesnt further the story, except give a reason for the woman to be where she is when she dies, and the sex scene wasnt needed for it. Murtaugh had about a dozen kids, but you never had to see Danny Glover in a sex scene to show a connection with his wife, or to prove he could have kids or whatever.

the image Jon S picked is akin to fanservice. T&A for the sake of T&A as opposed to a succubus is just nude, so showing a nude succubus is just par for the course, and you can position it in a way where it is nude, and nothing shows. so as opposed to a succubus, the picture Jon S chose is nudity for the sake of nudity, and absolutely no idea why, which gives no context to make the D&D connection.

If the Art Director for D&D thinks this way, I'm okay with that.
he is ok with nudity, yeah im fine with that, but it has its place. succubus, ok. dragonbewbs, NOT ok. the picture ogrebattle provided NOT OK!

is an image is going to be the "essence of D&D", then it needs to invoke D&D when you look at it. the mermaid in 1E didnt need exposed nipples. Batman movie didnt need an anatomically correct bat-suit to have nipples... nipples dont need to be shown in any of the art, same for penis, vagina, or anus. simply because D&D isnt about nipples, penis, vagina, or anus.
Play the game, not the rules.
