I mean, it's about the only fiction I've ever seen that has D&D-style high-level warriors and monsters, and it's good at integrating magic and mages in the setting from top to bottom, but while they're great at blasting and travel magic, Malazan mages don't do a lot of other things that high-level D&D casters do.
Yeah, it's not a perfect fit to D&D, but it's closer than a lot of stuff. And the aspects of D&D magic it emulates it tends to emulate relatively well, I think.

I remember more from their mages (if you dont exclude Non-Malazans and even if you do. Even if you do, most things where done by Malazan mages). Not 100% like D&D but there is
  • Illusions
  • Necromancy
  • Mind Switch?
  • Possesion
  • Shapechanging
Shure the malazans where doing mostly traveling and blasting, but it was'nt the only thing they did.

Zack Snyder's insistence on trying to ice skate uphill continues to fascinate me. I haven't watched his shiny new turd of a movie but I find the way he willfully misinterprets criticism levied against him pretty entertaining.

Yeah, good shit. He took a criticism of Superman killing lots of innocents and deflected with "well in Force Awakens, they blow up planets! That's way worse!"

Because he is either a dishonest fuckface, or alternatively, he does not understand the difference between good guys collateral damage and bad guys who's explicit goal is to murder lots of people and who is hated in the story.

I performed True Bro duties and let a buddy rant to me about Batman vs. Superman.

He told me the plot.

Fuck.

That.

Shit.

I hugged him and patted his back and offered to take him to go see Deadpool.

BvS is a terrible thing to do to DC fans.

Of course it is.
It is the oldest Argument in the Nerddom made into a movie.
And then not even solving it. And the REASON for them fighting is just stupid as well.
Also, big yes on taking him to see deadpool.
I hate going to the cinema. And i have been there TWICE to see the movie by now.
AND i will STILL buy the Blu Ray!
It's that good to me.

Is it just me, or has DC been unable to make a good movie to save it's life's since Dark Night Returns?

i would not call it good, at least not compared to the old Batman and Batman Returns movies, but at least decent . .
Was Green Lantern before or after Batman Begins / Dark Knight Returns?
And was it before or after Watchmen? Because THAT movie i love!
And why are they shoe-horning Wonder-Woman into that VS Movie at all?
Why does she not have her own movie to establish/introduce the character to the viewers before this?
Right now it seems to me that in terms of TV Series, DC is better but sucks in terms of Movies.
Marvel has it completely the other way around.
Their Movies are reasonably good (well, the not X-Men ones at least) and their TV-Series seem to be pretty bad.

I saw BvS last night. It was entertaining, in a "ooh look! fights!" sense. I liked parts of it- the way they characterized Lex overall, Wonder Woman, Alfred- but the movie as a whole was meh. Wonder Woman was the only main character actually in character. Batman was only in character as a movie Batman, which is it's own problem, Lex... I'm pretty sure would never kill whatsername, his girl Friday and girlfriend. Perry White was only in character because Superman writers have no fucking clue how a newspaper operates.

Ugh. It was bright and shiny, and some nerd cockteases, but that's about it.

The Bat Armor was cool though.

Wish they had actually ended Rises with the bat broken and done the next movie with the power armor Batman/Azrael-Character <.<
Because that is basically where the armor is from i think.

Which is even weirder since both Marvel and DC's animated movies/shows are pretty good (I would give the edge to DC for movies and Marvel for shows).

The Dark Knight Returns, actually. Knightfall came later.

The armor's from The Dark Knight Returns, a Frank Miller graphic novel where Batman, in his 50s, makes a suit of power armor to let him fight Superman on even terms.

Doomsday's from Death of Superman, and could have been really cool if they'd made him the centerpiece of a Superman movie--like one set after the Justice League movie.

No, really. Doomsday, you play up the evolution/regeneration-from-death aspect--at first he's a dumb brute, not even really sapient and eventually Superman kills him after he proves to be too much of a handful for one or two members of the Justice League. He comes back from that, making Superman fight hard to take him out. Lex Luthor gets hold of the body, supes it, up, makes Doomsday intelligent by cloning/copying a human brain in. Superman spends a few peaceful weeks, and then it's a knockdown dragout that ends up with Superman having to pull some serious bullshit to fight on hand with this thing that's actually stronger and tougher than him, and growing a lot of practical combat canniness the longer he fights.
Instead, Zack Snyder has to do his Visual Fanfic bullshit.

Which is also after Ronald Reagan nukes Superman in a friendly fire incident in not quite Nicaragua and blames it on the Russians.

Is there ANY comic writer who doesn't become an ass after he gets big enough to go "my way or the highway" and loses the checks of someone going, "No, Garth/Alan/Frank, stop and think a moment, that's stupid and just for shock value."

Anyone?

Any?

Bueller?

Oh yeah no argument from me THERE.
The ANIMATED SERIES of both are quite superb indeed!
EVEN the Fantastic Four ones are watchable in animated!

I mean, I guess the answer is "ones who still listen to their editors after they get big"

But it's not like comics is the only media that has this problem.

Hrm. I'm probably still going to watch it in theatre if only because my wife will have a free ticket for a movie this month (unless we can use it for April, then it's Keanu or Huntsman).

Hopefully lowered expectations will allow me to enjoy it the rest of the time when it isn't teasing my cock as Prak has promised. I never watched the recent supermans since they looked like abominations upon Superman's character (which is impressive that it repelled me since Superman is one of my least favorite heroes). Maybe if I treat this as a "What if superman was a callous murdering douche like in Supreme?" then I can swallow that pill.

No, supes was not an asshole.
That was, i think, the old superman 2?
With the green kryptonite affect on him.
In this? He just does not care about hundreds, thousands of lives in danger and millions of dollars in property damage.
Seriously, after his fight against Zod the city looked worse than manhatten after the avengers were done with the alien army . .

I'm not sure I follow this seeming contradiction.

Also, I remember a scene from a trailer where Pa Kent is telling Clark that maybe he should have let some people die rather than reveal his secret. That was a WTF moment to me.

Yeah, Man of Steel had this whole "You shouldn't do superhero things because you might get the gubmint down on you". And comes after after a young Clark's schoolbus goes off a bridge with most of the kids trapped, and he pushes it out of the water.

Then Papa Kent let himself get killed by a tornado because he'd rather die than have his son save his life by non-normal means.

Warren Ellis seems to have remained "not an ass". Arguably Grant Morrison too -at least in that he was always uneven but brilliant.

Warren Ellis seems to have remained "not an ass" by being one of those people who is innately a snarky ass, and so doesn't become a diva-ass

edit: Alan Moore is eccentric, and offputting, but I don't think he's really an ass.
