I'm throwing a character based off this class into a story I'm writing. Any suggestions for characterization?

What the heck, man? That depends entirely on what stances, maneuvers, feats, race, skills, and gear the soldier has. The only thing two soldiers have in common is being smart and hardy.

Well, yeah, I realize it's pretty open-ended. Just fishing for inspirational ideas.

Also very interested in a wide variety of fighting styles. So they're probably like MMA guys: always looking for new people to spar with, reading old combat manuals, talking about martial theory for fun.

Also, the Disguise theme indicates that they're probably students of people, all about getting into someone else's head. That could be played for empathy or for creepy.

I like the idea of this (high level) soldier having the mentality of an MMA guy beneath his civilized veneer. See, now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks guys.

This project is just something I'm doing for my writing group, writing in the style of Marquez.

You're also looking at someone who can learn a lot just by watching two folks fight. Who may very well go to the bareknuckle fighting rings and such to spectate even more than he participates.

If he's been around a while, he likely knows a lot of people.

YES!

One of the things I started with was to have this character imprisoned- the fact of which he just accepts because he is such a badass that he could leave if he felt like it. Also, there are a significant body of his former troops who are so dedicated to the legendary idea of him that it's quasi-worship.

(This is my first post on this forum, so I hope I am not doing anything reprehensible by necromantically raising this thread.)

I was looking over this class and was confused by some of of its more ambiguously worded aspects. How do you all handle the following quirks of the soldier in your own games?

1. In the "Soldier Maneuvers" class feature, it says "If they are using a double weapon with which they are proficient or two finesseable weapons, they may instead make one standard attack with each weapon (adding only half their Strength bonus to the off-hand weapon), but any special maneuver effects that trigger on damage only trigger once if either or both attacks hit."

The "Hydra Strike" maneuver reads, "The Soldier makes a flurry of attacks. The character makes a number of standard attacks equal to their Intelligence Modifier. These don't even have to be against the same target. Every time they get a critical hit, they get an additional attack. "

If a soldier wielding two finesseable weapons with Two-Weapon Fighting uses Hydra Strike, do you interpret them as being able to make a grand total of (Intelligence modifier) × 2 standard attacks, or do you interpret otherwise?

2. In the "Stances" class feature, it says, "While the Soldier is not flatfooted, they may engage a Stance at the cost of one Swift Action per round."

Do you interpret this as the soldier being able to enter a stance with a single swift action and then maintain it indefinitely, or do you interpret this as the soldier having to spend a swift action each round to maintain the stance?

3. In the "Giant Stances" class feature, it says, "Troll: The Soldier has Regeneration of 1 hit point per round per level. Acid, Fire, starvation, and suffocation do normal damage."

Do you interpret this as regeneration 1 for a number of rounds equal to the soldier's level, or do you interpret this as regeneration X for as long as the stance is maintained, where X is the soldier's level?

1. It's (Intelligence Modifier) x2 attacks, yes. I don't see any other possible interpretations to be honest, what did you think was ambiguous?
2. Swift action each round to maintain the stance (same as the Tome Monk's Fighting Styles).
3. The latter. Regeneration equal to level for as long as the stance is maintained. "1 hit point per level per round" would be clearer.

I can see that interpretation, given TWF gives many off-hands ye get with your main, with Attack actions/Full Attack. Though I was otherwise assuming it'd be like any other maneuver, So you'd get =int modifier in attacks for the main hand, and then get the single additional attack from the off-hand.

Of course, flavor-wise, can just say using the entire ends to the weapon when making the attacks, but yeah.

Oh, and Welcome to the Den Colette (Lurker prior or otherwise), cool to see more people using the [Tome] Soldier (possibly my favorite Tome Class), and [Tome] Material in general.

I just want to confirm; are the amount of "stances" that a Soldier can know unlimited?

For some reasons it seems that way; and that the "limiter" is that only one can be active per round.

You learn one stance per level. I don't think there's any limit on how many you can know, but I don't think there's a way to learn them faster than that either.

I am interested in the soldier once more (it is truly an interesting class, as you say), but I would like a second opinion on whether or not the Two Weapon Fighting feat and a pair of finesseable weapons would double the attacks granted by maneuvers like Hydra Strike and Blade Rush.

Would anyone happen to have any other interpretations on how the attacks might or might not be doubled in this case?
