I used to think I liked traps - the more the better. Then I played in a con game where traps were the main threat, and I realized they're definitely best when used scarcely. With so many traps, there was no reason not to just assume everything was trapped, and set it off from a distance. And with a lot more traps than foes, there was no real pressure in doing so.

I think traps that are triggered by foes do have some potential though, especially if there's ways to obstruct / disable them more interesting than "blast it repeatedly from 100' away".

Yeah, I really find that the only way to make traps fun is to have the traps mixed in with monsters. Traps on their own are generally just timewasters (unless you define "trap" broadly enough to include something you can fight as well).
